Blame previous generations

I was born in '88, but even when I was in school the massive anti-bullying, everybody is great, don't hurt feelings movement was getting started. We were raised to speak up if anything made us uncomfortable and somebody would fix it because you should never feel bad ever.

We didn't raise ourselves. So thanks for that Gen X/baby boomers

Wow! When I went to High School, I was assigned a bully right after I was assigned a homeroom teacher.

Yeah, I dunno why people are so blindsided by it. I'm in my early 30s, which puts me near the millennial/gen X cutoff, but I'm solidly a millennial not that it even matters anyway. If you were born in the 20th century but reached adulthood in the 21st century, you're a millennial, and that covers 1982-1999.
I think there's two kinds of millennials. There's the millennial that grew up before social media/smartphones and the millennial that grew up with social media/smartphones. The former seems to have better social skills than the latter. I've told this story before, but my original career of choice was journalism. I went to school from 2004-2008 then went back to school to get my MBA in business management from 2010-2014. The difference in millennials from those two time periods is night and day.

During my first foray into higher education, kids actually talked to one another between classes. We got to know each other. Talked about where the party was at, if we were going to the show/concert/game/etc. We talked about the class, the teacher, everything. We had nothing else to do.

My second foray was a LOT different even though the years weren't that far apart. But it was something I could start to see happen at the end of my first attempt. Now, instead of walking down the halls and hearing kids talking to each other, their heads were buried in their cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc. The halls between classes were much, much quieter. It was like they lost the ability to talk to one another.

I often interview millennials a lot for some of the entry positions in my company. While some genuinely do have good social skills and common sense, I've come across others that were extremely awkward socially (moreso than some of the Gen Xers and Boomers I've interviewed). I also cannot tell you how many I've interviewed that have either: A) shown up without a resumé or, B) have worn jeans and a button down to the interview. That's something I have NEVER seen from other generations.

That said, other generations suck just as bad. I have never seen either the Gen Xers or the millennials present the same massive sense of entitlement and "I want it now, now, right now!" attitude that Boomers possess. The Boomers are also directly to blame for the state this country is currently in since our elected representatives are mostly from that generation. Further, it's absolutely hilarious to hear both generations criticize the millennials since they're the ones that raised us. We didn't raise ourselves. Bang up job, guys.

yes ..it's all our fault...I apologize for my generation. Now, who wants to Wooly Bully?

I have 4 'millenials' of my own.......I must have done something differently

I secretly suspect everyone that comes in here saying Gen X is actually a millennial
Born in 1973 I feel like I'm firmly a Gen Xer.

Sure was great growing up fearing nuclear war and AIDS!

My kids were born in 1997, 2000, and 2003. I guess that is Gen Z?

"What was the source of this younger generation you don't like again? Oh that's right, it's YOUR *****-ass generation!"

How do they never think of that when they start complaining? LOL

Also remember when Gen-X was the slacker generation, then they all went off to Iraq and Afghanistan to get killed? Good times. And now Millenials are the ones on the front lines, but sure, they're all pillowy-soft babies.

Same.

No one is saying you didn't get a sh*t deal.

Starting with a parenting school of thought emphasizing self-esteem over merit.

When that generation hit the teenage years where the need for approval from their peers became more important than approval from their parents, they were cursed with "social media" which ******ed their ability to form anything other than superficial relations with their peers.

Throw someone raised like that into a corporate environment that couldn't care less about them as a people and they're going to freak out.

And here we are.

honestly.......you don't know what you are talking about

competition for merit in high school is more intense than it has ever been

**** deal or not, I came out on the other end just fine. My commentary was more from personal experience than anything else. My girl and I, both millennials, have a no cell phone policy at the dinner table and I make every attempt to talk to people that I can. I will admit that others from my generation are far more useless, though. But that's the case with every generation of Americans. "The Greatest Generation" that won WWII (and they are, IMO, the greatest) even ****ed up. Look at how their kids turned out. That said, they were the last generation to leave the world a better place than they found it. We'll see how Gen X and the millennials fare but, right now, it ain't looking very good.

Which even if true is the fault of... their parents... from the older generations... who are complaining about them.

Its almost like things change generation to generation and companies need to adapt to that. But at the same time, every generation has responded in the same way to the new generation and I'm sure mine will talk about how the next one sucks because all they do is play games on their neural implants.

technology changes but people don't change from generation to generation........individuals themselves change over time......I am nothing like I was then I was 20......if I was, I'd be dead....one way or another, I'd be dead
