Adam Silver is a lawyer by trade and not a flashy one. He wants this settled out of the public eye.

I think Giannis is a slam dunk for that list as well, as is Chris Paul.

There are quite a few players you could make a case for too, though it's no slam dunk: Paul George, Jimmy Butler, Isaiah (I think Kyrie is the better player, but IT was unquestionably better this past season: more efficient at a higher volume), Draymond, and Demarcus Cousins being the first that come to mind.

If I was coming up with a list of player contracts that I would most like to have, Kyrie might make it into my top 10 by virtue of being 25 and under team control for a couple more years. If I was coming up with a ranking of top players in the NBA without considering contracts and future projection, Kyrie's probably in my 15-20 range. What he gives us in 2017 will almost certainly be less than what IT gave us in 2016, although it'll likely be more than IT can give in 2017. No matter what I think we have to accept that we aren't getting 2016 IT from our starting PG, and we'll have to lean on Hayward, Brown and Tatum to make up some of that production.

Yeah, if I'm the Celtics I draw a hard line and call their bluff, knowing that they won't get a better offer. Nobody in a position to want to trade for Kyrie has the assets to make a better offer, which means they're trying to make us bid against ourselves out of fear that they'd sabotage their own rebuild in order to stick us with a pissed off IT.

If I'm Ainge I tell them to **** off and honor the deal they made or go try to find something better when teams like Phoenix won't even entertain giving up the likes of Josh Jackson and Paul George and Jimmy Butler just got traded for peanuts.

the 2008 Celtics traded for a couple exceptional players and immediately won a title. The Heat did the same thing a couple years later and won 2 titles in the next 4 years. LeBron came back to Cleveland to a bunch of fanfare after that and immediately went to 3 straight finals and won a title. The Warriors responded by adding Kevin Durant to their core and immediately won a title.

Chemistry matters, but it doesn't matter anywhere near as much as talent. If the Celtics turn Bradley and Crowder into Hayward and Tatum, I'm fine with that. Partly because they're replacing two character guys with two more character guys, but also because the guys coming in are significantly more talented than the guys heading out.

We had already seen what the IT/Bradley/Smart/Crowder/Horford/Olynyk Celtics could do. We saw their ceiling, and it was getting decisively beaten by a team that was in turn decisively beaten in the finals. They had to improve on that core, and that's what they've done. Getting Hayward was the right move, and that entailed letting Bradley and Olynyk go. You do that 10 times out of 10 and never look back. Eventually, Crowder was always going to have to go too if only to free up minutes for Brown and Tatum on a team that already features Hayward.

As far as replacing IT with Kyrie... I'm pretty indifferent to it, tbh. I prefer IT as a person and a rooting interest, and I think IT's best season--2016--was better than any season Kyrie's put together. But as an asset over the next 3 years, Kyrie is better to have because of age and cost control. So my feelings are mixed, and on an emotional level I don't like the trade, but if Stevens thinks it's the right call then I've got a hunch that it's wise to wait and see.

This trade is a good example of why it's sometimes good to be a Boston fan that doesn't live in Boston anymore. The love the town feels for IT is nice, but from a somewhat more objective perspective, you see that, sentiment aside, this is a very good trade for the Celtics.
