Atlanta contained the offense?
The one that set records?

They contained the offense for almost 3/4s of the game. Atlanta only held the ball for 23:27. If Atlanta's offense is able to sustain drives then there isn't time for the Patriots to make the comeback, and Atlanta's defense would be more rested.

546 total yards
43 completed passes
34 points
37 1st downs (and 7/14 conversions)
29 first downs made on 1st or second down.

There has never been a game in the history of the NFL that a defense would say they would feel they controlled the other teams offense with that production.

I really want to see how McClellin and Van Noy play. Both of them needed work on their run defense. McClellin is actually fast enough to play lb but he has a lazy demeanor to him that frustrates me.

The very few players that I can hate on have almost been hidden or stuck into roles that they excel at. ex. they have turned Bolden and Slater into exclusively st players so I no longer have a reason to be angry. I have never even been given a chance to hate on Brandon King because I don't remember ever seeing him on defense lol.

So you are including the 4th quarter?

If Slater isn't ready to start the season, that may buy Lucien a reprieve.

Or Carr or Butler or . . . Losing Slater would not necessarily create a spot for another WR. Slater is a WR in name only. If they could list him at "ST," they would.

Remember 2015's "X went on IR, so let's sign another safety"?

And overtime. (Not sure he read the part where Nehalem said, "They contained the offense for almost 3/4s of the game.")

The Pats did move the ball well against Atlanta for the first 3 quarters. They just made three catastrophic and uncharacteristic errors:

1. The Blount fumble, as they were driving for a score.
2. The Brady pick-six, as they were driving for a score.
3. The Bennett holding on the play that nearly put the Pats in the end zone at the end of the first half.

Those three errors cost the Patriots minimum 9 points, and maximum 21 points. I believe they'd have scored a TD in the third situation, and a TD in one of the other two, meaning I think those three mistakes cost them 17 points. Moreover, they directly led to 7 points for Atlanta (the pick-six). That's a 24-point swing just in the first half. Instead of being down 21-3, the Pats should have been up 17-14.

Nevertheless...the Falcons DID make the stops they needed to in the first half. The Patriots DID make those mistakes. And so you could say that the Falcons defense DID limit the Patriots for the first half anyway. Then the floodgates opened up midway through the third period and the Pats went TD, FG, TD, TD, TD.

I think Lucien was mentioned because he's been getting rave reviews in the last few practices. He may indeed be the next best guy for the 53 regardless of position.

What for yards? Who cares about yards.

Having only surrendered 3 points near the end of the 3rd qtr and 20 up until :57 remaining in the game is the definition of containment.

Not when it's only happening because the opponent is self-destructing, which was the case in the SB.

I blame the ATL offense a helluva lot more than the ATL defense.

No Ryan fumble or ATL oline holding or allowing sacks the D goes down in history as doing a great job.

Patchick Jr. and I spent some time at camp this morning. We didn't have the best view so I can't add too much to what's been said already, but some impressions that stick in my mind:

- Yep, Brady -> Cooks is the real deal. This could be special.
- Devin Lucien would have been a lock for a lot of past Pats WR rosters. I think he has a real future, whether here or elsewhere.
- Overall, this looks like one heck of a rookie class given that they didn't make a pick until the middle of round 3! Deatrich Wise seemed to be a fixture in the #1 defense today, and Butler also got some good chances to run with the 1s and didn't look out of place. And Kenny Moore had a nice PBU in the slot and struck me as very active and aware. He's doing his best to make it hard to cut him.
- For Jax, Marqise Lee kept leaping out at me. Their WR corps in general is clearly the strongest unit on the team, but Lee in particular seemed like a playmaker.

If the OL blocks then only Denver, NYG, Seattle and Minnasota can slow us down. Without a pass rush though they won't be able to contain the Pats if healthy for too long.

With a pass rush any team can slow this offense down. In the end it comes down to the OL. If they block it is just a matter of time.
Vikings lol. We dont have to worry about them. Bradford will probably break his own completion percentage record all while having the lowest yards per attempt ever

Well I am talking just about Ds and more so back 7s. This is why I included the Vikings but not Houston. Houston has a good D but it is built around their DLine. If they don't get pressure they get carved up pretty fast.

I don't think I'm overstating this but on a team that was particularly stacked going into TC, this year's crop of UDFA's could be one of the best they ever had. AButler, Moore, Carr, Hollister, etc have all caught people's eye during camp. Plus impressive 2nd year UDFA's like Lucien and Foster. The shame of it is that so many will have to be let go. The shark will be circling the Pats when cuts are finally made

We should start a pool with just how many Pats cuts will wind up on OTHER teams' 53 man rosters after the September cuts.

My pick is 3

Good news. Now that Coughlin's with the Jags, he can't kick Bill's ass over and over again in big games.
