OT - Celtics to trade #1 overall pick?

As a Freshman, Bird sat on the Indiana bench. As a 5th year senior, Bird lifted a bunch of nobodies to the championship game. Too bad we won't be able to see Fultz as a 5th year senior.
Bird never played at Indiana. He left long before the season started.

I'm calling it now . . .
Celts swap picks with Sixers . . .
Celtics take Dennis Smith Jr. at #3. . .
Biggest draft day heist since Robert Parish and Kevin McHale for Joe Barry Carroll.

The NBA is a star driven league. If Ainge does not think Fultz will end up being a top 10 player and/or is not any better than pick 3 then it makes sense to grab extra picks for the future when a transcendent player may be available. I watch a fair amount of college hoops but I honestly have no true sense of how good any of the top 5 players are going to turn out.

The NBA can be summed up as ...he who has the best player wins.
Not necessarily true

Chicago had the best player on the floor but Boston defeated them.
Washington had the two best players on the floor but Boston defeated them.
Lebron is 3-5 in NBA Finals.

Casual fan? I've been a hard core Celts fan since 1979 pal. Don't take this debate to a sports radio level.

When it comes to orchestrating trades, Danny is the best in the league. That is defensible. His player acquisition strategy is to acquire proven NBA talent. A certain guy in Foxboro has the same philosophy.

Show me another GM who is elite at drafting. Hint: you won't find one. NBA prospects are a total and complete crap shoot.

Jalen Brown is a wait and see but overall his rookie season was decent
Rozier was ok....picked #16th.
Smart is fine for #6. Could be worse. Could be better.
Olynyk at #13 from DAL was a crap shoot. He was barely a lottery pick.
Sullinger was #21. He had some value
Avery Bradley was an excellent pick at #21
Jeff Green (ultimately) was ok here for #6
Foye was traded at #7

Go back and look at the players immediately picked before/after those players and tell me if he better or worse.

Go back and look at his trades.

Go back and look at the 2 rebuilding jobs.

He lands Horford in FA, they go to the ECF with a roster with more holes than swiss cheese and people still *****.

He lands a very, very good young head coach.

He hires Doc Rivers from the scrap heap and wins COTY.

Overall Record as GM

14 Seasons
11 Playoff Appearances
4 ECF Appearances
2 Finals Appearances
1 World Championship (should be 2 if Perk doesn't blow out his knee in G6)

The problem with your analysis is you don't have perspective. You clearly have a bias against Ainge and refuse to acknowledge his body of work. 30 other NBA owners would kill for him running their teams.
Only dumb moves he made was picking Fab (RIP) and signing Jermaine O'Neal who was clearly toast.

No one does.

Just look at the NBA scoring leaders and their draft status in round 1

In no order..

Westbrook- 4th
Towns- 1st
Davis 1st
Boogie 6th
Kawhi-15th
LeBron- 1st
DeRozan- 9th
Wiggans- 1st
Lillard- 6th
IT- 2nd rd
Steph- 7th
Harden 3rd
Kyrie 1st

Just gotta trust Danny here with the evaluation and projection of the player's impact and value.

Hes asking himself if Fultz at #1 be more valuable than two top 3 picks (this year and potentially next year). Something tells me hes cooking up some major parlaying here.

Call it who, and what, you want, but San Antonio has the best front office in the game. Also, Jerry West is now at advisor status, but he'd have qualified as elite, if he were still running the show, IMO.

Ainge has been good at tapping oddities and fringes (high schoolers for Jefferson and Perk, an a-hole like Rondo, bilking a Russian rube in the Brooklyn deal, getting KG when the Minnesota owner just wanted him gone at any cost, snagging borderline NBA players with later picks (i.e. Gomes), etc...), but he's been very average in normal situations where he's got to do things straight up, which is how you end up with the Fab Melos of the world, and how you end up destroying a potential dynasty by trading away Kendrick Perkins.

O'Neal was totally cooked. So was Shaq.

Melo was clearly a horrible pick but I understood Danny's logic. He was looking for Kendrick Perkins 2.0. Raw athletic, 7 footer. The guy had 1/3 of his games his 2nd year with 4 blocks or more with 10 in one game. He also had 1/3 of his games with 10+ points and 7+ rebounds vs ACC (or Big East) teams. You can't teach size.

DeAndre Jordan was a 2nd rounder and Gobert was rd1/27th. He was hoping for lighting in a bottle.

I messed up. I meant to say 28 NBA teams but thought of the NFL which has 32. SA and GS are FOs that I think would keep their GMs and not want Danny.

West is up there no question. Great job with LA. Very good with the Griz.

Loved Perk but highly questionable Danny dumping Perk broke the dynasty. While I absolutely hated the move, they were not getting past MIA in 2011. 2012 is certainly a discussion as we do not know who they would have played as OKC made it to the Finals as they beat SA in the WCF. I think losing to MIA in 2012 had more to do with Bradley's hurtie shoulder. He gave LeBron and Wade fits.

Fultz to me is Andrew Wiggins 2.0, he'll blow you away with his athletic ability but when push comes to shove, he aint leading a team to the promised land without serious help around him.

Ive said trade the pick all along and im standing by it. With the exception of Curry whos a completely unique player, what star point guard in the league is leading there team to titles? The answer is none. Rose couldnt do it pre injury, westbrook cant do it, lillard, wall, lowry, etc..

If the celtics want to be a serious title contender i strongly feel they need to consider looking elsewhere with this pick

Boston never lost a playoff series with the big 5 all healthy.

The NFL equivalent of this trade is the Browns trading down from 1 to 3 to take Thomas over Garrett and accumulate assets in the process.

I would've made that move in NFL. I barely know the NBA draft to really form an opinion on Fultz vs Jackson though.

That's true of almost every player in NBA history, even the greats. In fact, if you can find one modern day NBA championship team that had one player and nothing else, you'll have found a unicorn. Even planet players (Bird, Jordan, etc...) need quality help to win titles.

Having said that, I agree that Fultz doesn't seem as if he's the sort of player who's clearly destined to be a planet player. Those guys only come along on rare occasions (last 2: James, Duncan, so 2 in the last 20 years).

When I look at drafting, I don't compare the entire NFL draft with the NBA. I compare the way I'd be drafting at QB with the NBA draft. If you think you have a Tom Brady, you don't trade down and take an Eli Manning and some picks. If you think you only have an Eli Manning, you might trade down for a Drew Stafford and some picks.

ahahah apparently there's a possibility that a 76ers 1st round pick for 2021 is part of the deal.

2021! When they might be one of the best teams in the league by then!

That's one of my main points. Its become rare that you get kids with even 2 college years before they come out. So now it seems you have to waite at least 3 yaers years hoping that the great talent you drafted a few years ago, ACTUALLY becomes the all star player you hoped he was when you drafed him.

They pretty much ALL come out too early, and thet's led to the decline of the number of quality teams in the league. Teams like Philly NO, and Minn have proven you can draft high every year and STILL not win. Part of the reason is that because they leave so early, there aren't nearly enough players who are actually ready to play in the NBA to fill the league wth competitive players.

Instead you get talented players who aren't man enough to contribute when they come into the league. Yet they are multimillionares with guaranteed contract, shoe deals who are complete risks (with rare exceptions) because you can't possibly tell if they will ever develop into the maniac competitors that will keep on improving their games so they can create a great team.

That's definitely true and a better analogy.

Crap...hope Ainge is right.
