Perhaps we should take a poll on who we'd rather spend on
in the SB, Amendola or Foster. Who do we want catching a couple of keys passes, returning punts?

Is Bulkhead really a top punt returner?
I'm sure you realize I was not trying to say Foster has proven himself to be better than Amendola. Clearly Danny has made some very clutch plays here. That said, he isn't getting any younger (currently 31) and he's no longer as athletic as he once was. He mostly gets by on precise route-running and knowing where to be. Foster hasn't yet proven himself, but he also has not yet had the chance. He's cheaper, much younger, and more flexible.

When you have Cooks, Edelman, Hogan, Mitchell (WR)/Gronk, Allen (TE)/Lewis, White, Gillislee, Burkhead (RB)... That's 10 offensive players who are most likely gonna get more touches than Amendola. For your potentially 11th guy, would you rather have the older veteran who gets by on smarts, or a young guy with potential who can be both your 5th RB and your 5th WR?

I love what Danny's brought to the table and would hate to see him go. Just talking about how I see things right now on the overall roster.

Some think that Foster is competing with Lewis.

You think that he has a shot of beating out both Amendola and Hawkins?
I think Lewis is an iron clad lock.
I expect his role to be what it was in 2015

It is certainly possible that Lewis is as healthy and able as in 2015. That seems unlikely.

That being said, if Lewis is healthy, he'll make the 53 with White, Gillislie and Burkhead.

Kind of sad when we're talking about a guy who played in 7 total games and ran the ball about 50 times as being "healthy and able," and that was as the lead rusher for the first 2 games since Blount was suspended.

As a matter of fact, since Lewis started in 2011 he's never once seen the 300 yard club as it pertains to rushing, so while he may go back to 2015's production, they also seem to have created bigger roles for White, Burkhead, and Gilleslee, so even a healthy Lewis may have his touches spread out more than some assume. Here's hoping for good health.

Why would that seem unlikely?

I don't think either make the team.

Lewis
Gillislee
White
Burkhead

And Devlin at FB.

Foster to ps I would bet.
Burkhead replaces Bolden on teams

I just don't have enough information on Foster. Is he coachable? Can he make special teams tackles? How tough is he?

He cleared waivers last year. Why not this year with the "deep draft?"

Bolden is a kid you know. That said they only signed him for a year at minimum salary.
If Foster is so good, why wasn't he returning kicks last year.

I think this is the year he goes. He just doesn't do enough. Can't remember the last game he really positively stood out as a RB making plays or as a STer making plays. He is good enough to be on this team most years. Just not this one.

Spoiler alert: if it comes down to Foster vs. Bolden, it's Bolden unless Foster is drastically better than he was.

It'll come down to Foster v. Lewis, or Foster v. a sixth WR (not counting Slate), or Foster v. a receiving TE.

It'll come down to Bolden v. a special-teamer at another position, probably LB or DB, but also possibly TE if O'Shaughnessy is really that good.

But, it won't come down to Foster v. Bolden.

Foster came out of college weighing 195, but he's also six-feet tall. If he's put on another 10 pounds or so in the weight room, he maybe could be okay as an ST tackler. Bolden weighed 220 coming out of college, though, and BB does like heft on ST.

Foster made the 53-man and was kept on the roster until he was waived during Thanksgiving weekend last year (when the Pats claimed Darius Sligo). Foster cleared through to the PS and returned to the 53-man on Dec. 3rd. Big difference between clearing waivers during Camp cuts and clearing waivers that late in the season.

For some reason, just because hes making $3m a year people think Burkhead is not playing STs. He is a core STer

Bolden has an uphill climb to make this roster the size of Mt. Everest.

Burkhead won't be both a core special-teamer on the Pats AND a significant part of the offense. There's simply too much to learn on offense every week for him to be spending CBA-limited practice snaps on ST work.

The $3.15M the Pats are spending on him for just the one season seems a very strong indication that they expect him to be a significant part of the offense.

If Burkhead ends up a core special-teamer at Bolden's level of participation, it would seem likely that he failed to meet those expectations.
