Some bits from Day 3 blogservations:
Blogservations: Secondary gets job done

-- Interesting to watch Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore lock up on a few occasions the past three days. On Thursday, Gilmore came out on top on a pair of long balls, preventing completions each time with tight coverage. Otherwise Cooks has been almost impossible to keep in check, so Gilmore’s work stuck out even if such evaluations are flawed given the conditions.

-- Thursday Cyrus Jones manned the slot corner spot. The second-year man did not fare too well in his role as he was beaten decisively by Julian Edelman for a touchdown on one rep when he appeared to be trailing by a wide distance.

-- The early 7-on-7 work featured a secondary that included two separate groupings, one with two corners and three safeties and the other the opposite. The first had Gilmore and Rowe with Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung and Jordan Richards while the latter had Gilmore, Rowe, and Cyrus Jones with Chung and McCourty. Richards saw a lot of reps with the de facto top groups over the three days.

-- Jacoby Brissett took the “backup” reps following Tom Brady in the final 11-on-11 work of the day. Brissett got two sets while Garoppolo watched. The second-year quarterback struggled with his timing and accuracy, often holding the ball when he couldn’t find a receiver quickly enough, but he saw his most extensive action of the week.

-- The work is not entirely done, though, as they will return to Foxborough next week for three more OTA sessions. Only the Monday workout is open to the media, however, and all are closed to the public.

Can't wait for full gear and contact practices. All that we hear now is a nice appetizer but ultimately meaningless.

Reiss on Lewis:
Sudden and smooth in practice, Dion Lewis is ready to fight for his spot

quote:

"He's had a good offseason," head coach Bill Belichick said Thursday. "He really worked hard to get back for the end of last year [because of a knee injury], and then this year, he's been able to improve on that. [I'm] anxious to see him in training camp, but he's done a good job out here."

Lewis appears to have regained the shiftiness and explosiveness he displayed before a torn ACL in November of 2015 ... Some have speculated that perhaps Lewis could get squeezed out of a roster spot because of the numbers crunch, but it's hard to imagine that based on how he's looked in spring practices.

On Thursday, for example, Lewis was second in line as pass-catching running backs worked with quarterback Tom Brady on out routes in the red zone. When he planted his right foot and then broke toward the sideline, it was sudden and smooth.

Dear god... '15 Lewis on top of what we already have..... holy sh*t holy sh*t holy sh*t holy sh*t

Honestly when he first came here, I was wondering if he stole your girl or something. The guy has clutch in his DNA.

Yep

One time I even said something about it.

BTW
The Patriots' offseason program wraps up with June 12, 13, and 15 OTA sessions.

Mixed bag at best if it wasn't for draft status he would be on the outside looking in to make the team.

Curious why in the world you'd disagree with this, MG?

QB - 3
RB - Lewis, White, Bolden, Burkhead, Gillislee, Foster
WR - Amendola, Edelman, Cooks, Hogan, Mitchell, Hawkins, Lucien...
CB - Jones, Jones, Rowe, Butler, Gilmore, Coleman, couple of rookies...

My feeling is that some fo the guys the Pats cut will have very good NFL careers/seasons, like Leblanc last year.

You don't agree with that?

IMHO, the patriots don't want an expanded roster, although an expanded active roster would be good for everyone.

The patriots are better than anyone with a 53 man roster. The patriots might even have more advantage with a 46 man roster. The patriots know better than anyone how to use players in multiple positions.

It is very easy to expand the roster; simply eliminate the Practice Squad and add the positions to the roster.

BOTTOM LINE
Better coaching is more important as the roster is smaller.
Player flexibility is more important as the roster is smaller.

Too many good running backs. I have to believe they also want to keep Devlin.

Lewis, White, Bolden, Burkhead, Gillislee, Foster, Devlin

Who on that list looks most vulnrable?

Bolden IMO
I have a lot of appreciation for Bolden, but it's beginning to look that way.

LOCKS
White, Bulkhead, Gillislee, Develin

KEEP ONE OR TWO
Foster, Bolden and Lewis

IMHO, Foster in most vulnerable. Edelman and Amendola are our punt returners.
White is our 3rd down receiver. Lewis adds more as a backup on 3rd down, since he also can play on other downs. Obviously, Bolden is a top special teamer. From a roster perspective, special teamers are always seen as most vulnerable here on this board.

Historically I agree on ST but with Burkehead being a top ST guy too, I think time runs out on Bolden. If Burkehead were irreplaceable on offense maybe not but as we're fine on offense without him, he can play lots of ST - although I would never underestimate Bill's ability to keep lots of ST only guys.

That's the only reason I'm seeing Bolden as a possible cut, too.
