Patriots Tendered Blount

I was wondering the same, but the more I think about it the range off affected players may just be very narrow.

A veteran unrestricted free agent who:
- Earned a modest salary the previous season
- Wasn't signed by anyone during the first 2 months of free agency
- Is considered valuable enough for other teams to be interested post-May 9th, and for the original team to devote a spot on the offseason roster to him

Can you think of other recent eligible players?

Can it only be issued on May 9?

There you go with the clarifying facts again.

IDK.

Blount's first two seasons (Tampa), in 27 games, he put up ...
.. 1,781 yards on 385 carries (4.6 avg) and 9 TDs
.. he also caught 20 of 32 passes for 162 yards.

Of course, he also fumbled 9 times and was beat out by Doug "Muscle Hamster" Martin in his 3rd season (2012).

The Pats picked him up in 2013.

Prior to this past season, in 33 games for the Pats, Blount produced ...
.. 1,756 yards on 378 carries (4.6 avg) and 16 TDs
... and caught 12 of 16 for 99 yards and 1 TD

I think this is terrible. The guy did a good job. They don't want to pay him and they are placing obstacles for him to get paid somewhere else.
You believe Rap-o-fart?

The sad truth is there isn't a lucrative market for 30yr old RBs who are not elusive, productive in the passing game and do not play STs.

You could be spot on but man it looks harsh in black and white.
Brandon Bolden DJ Foster just called to move their lease to a month by month

It's totally shrewd. BB dumped the stock and bought it back at a discount

BB gave him a chance to try and escape the orbit but the gravity was too strong.

Great move by BB&co. Less so for Blount I guess.

But they did invest in his great season and believe some compensation is in order..
Kraft, BB, Blount are all at the Celtics game together so i guess they are ok

>> Any playoff team would easily sacrifice the 212+ pick in the draft for a veteran with Blount's production and experience

Then why is he not on a team yet, when they would not have had to give up anything to get him?

It's impossible to know what Blount was asking for, how long, and how much they signaled Blount's interest in staying with the Patriots. All we know is that he gained over 1100 yards, scored 18 rushing TDs, and averaged 3.9 ypg in one of the NFL's more run-oriented offenses, especially early in the season.

The report today is that LGB is not going to sign this tender. That tells us that he's looking for a multi-year deal (unlikely) and a higher salary (possible.) Maybe a modest guaranteed salary will get a deal done. We'll see.

Good point. Assuming they could have and didn't, I'm thinking the guy must have some serious baggage.

Floyd's 2016 salary was $7.44M. The rise to 110% would have made it $8.2M for 2017.

Noob questions...

If he signs the tender, then is the 1.1 million guaranteed? But if he signs then he's also on the roster, correct, so they'd be up to 6 or 7 RBs, which seems too high? Which means there's a high likelihood they cut him and have dead cap money?

So what are the advantages of tendering him? Or am I overestimating the chance that he's cut?

Either way, I'm a Blount fan if no other reason than his personality and I'd be fine if he came back to us for 1.1 million.

Miguel posted most of the answers here.

What is going on here ? Why are we ultra-loyal to a player NE's clearly replaced ?

He did what was asked & he was paid the amount stipulated in his contract. Further, he (or, at least, his agent) is aware of the contract between the union & the League.

People on here needn't be feeling bad for Blount. Obviously there is no market for him. Otherwise, he'd have a deal.

With some of the responses you'd think that this was Frick and Carnegie using the Pinkertons to breakup the Homestead strike.

wow ice cold move

How do all these RBs make the roster? lol.. maybe they get rid of Develin?

White
Burkhead
Gillislee
Lewis
Blount
Bolden
Develin

Unless they plan on trading Lewis, its a fight between Blount, Bolden and Develin for that 5th RB spot.. unless they go crazy and keep 6 RBs on the roster, but they're going to need to go with 6 WR also... so roster spots are going to be TIGHT.. plus a 3rd QB which we havent had in a long time

They didn't place any obstacles prior to today, and even then, it's unlikely they're going to stop him from signing somewhere else. I think they are using this to add to their comp pick formula. Why not at least try to get a 5th, 6th, (more likely 7th) round comp pick, rather than nothing, particularly if he's heading to a rival like Baltimore. I know we've signed Gilmore, which wipes off a lot of the positives in the formula, although we also lost Ryan, Sheard, Long, Mingo, etc.

You're acting as if the team somehow prevented him from signing with another team in free agency over the past 2+ months. That isn't the case at all. He's been free to do whatever he wanted. It's actually much more likely that he was 1) using the Pats as leverage in his negotiations, and/or 2) attempting to keep them waiting around, which they finally stopped doing a couple of weeks ago with the acquisition of Gilleslee. It's not their fault that he never signed with another team since the start of free agency.

I think it was Reiss who speculated yesterday that the Pats may have done this to ensure they don't lose one of their own (current) two comp picks in case Mingo is cut or Long retires.
