Since Brady came into the league in 2000, the Browns have drafted.....
3....1st rd QBs
3....3rd rd QBs
1.....4th rd QB
1.....6th rd QB

During the same 17 year period, Cleveland has started approximately 25 QBs

Yet.....Cleveland's 2017 #1 is off limits?

ahahahahahahaha........Hue Jackson cracked a funny....cracked a funny

If I was BB....and knowing Cleveland's QB draft record.....I'd give Cleveland a discount and only ask for 3 firsts and 3 thirds. The Browns can hang on to their 4th and 6th rounders because of BB's history with the team.
If Cleveland really wants JG....then why isn't Lebron courting BB on behalf of his city and kissing the 7 rings?

Even if Myles Garrett is the next JJ Watt the team still isn't going anywhere without a quality QB. If they think Jimmy G has the makings of a franchise QB they should get him.

This is very similar to the way I feel about it. Absolute no-brainer you make the trade. They drafted an absolute stud player in Joe Thomas who has been there 10 years. Where has that gotten them? What exactly will Myles Garrett contribute to their win/loss record? if they are wrong about Garopollo, then so be it, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I remember a quote I saw in a film with the great coach Bill Walsh where he said Cleveland is where great QB's to die. I forget the QB he was talking about, a #1 draft pick,, but he thought this guy would be better than Montana, and said so. But by the time he ended up in Chicago his arm was destroyed, and he wouldnt pull the trigger.

IMHO, the first pick (or the second) is usually worth 3 first rounders. Jimmy just isn't worth that.

Given the history of the Browns, if I were the GM, and I truly thought JAG was going to be great (not just an average starter, but great), I'd give up every natural Browns pick in this draft, and maybe even toss in a pick from next year's draft, if that's what it took.

I'm the Browns GM. People are already laughing at me, so who cares if they laugh some more?

Just to follow up on my last post, here's what Cleveland has this draft:

1,1
1,12
2,1
2,20
3,1
4,1
4,36
5,1
5,32
5,38
6,1

So, even if they did what I noted above, they'd still have

1,12
2,20
4,36
5,32
5,38

for picks. One slight drop down from 12, if they could find a partner, could easily replenish the draft (3rd, 6th, 7th)

Some ammo for those who think the #1 overall pick is a sure Hall of Fame player...and I will omit quarterbacks taken at #1 since that is kind of the point here, that Garrett is the presumed pick rather than a QB. Here is the list since 2000.

2014 - Jadeveon Clowney
2013 - Eric Fisher
2008 - Jake Long
2006 - Mario Williams
2000 - Courtney Brown

So, it's not like the #1 pick is a sure fire star, let alone all-pro player for the next ten years. Both Clowney and Williams were similarly hyped like Garrett as incredible pass rushers who couldn't possibly bust. They didn't bust, but they also didn't really move the needle in terms of winning. Even if Garrett is the next Von Miller, the Broncos have generally been a contender with a great QB and a bubble playoff team without one, and that's also due to many others on that defense. We saw last year that when Derek Carr got injured, there was little that the DPOY, Khalil Mack, could do to win games on his own.

If the Browns are high on JG and not on another QB, I don't see how they could absolutely refuse to trade the number one pick. If they are willing to trade away #12 and a variety of other picks, it shows how badly they want him. They are just being stupid if #1 is off the table.

They need players in sveral areas, of course, but those players should be available down-draft, particularly this year. What's relevant here is that they're not going ANYWHERE until they get at least a solid qb, and JG is far more likely to fill that critical role than anybody available this year, with any pick.

Fortunately for a guy like me, who wants to keep JG around, Cleveland is probably too dumb to do the wise thing. Like most perennial losers, they're afraid to fail, and so haven't got the Moxie to do the bold thing.

I hope they do. But if I'm the GM I don't even trade for Jimmy at all. Even for the #12. They are awful. They might as well get as many non-QB pieces as possible & control those players. They are not close to winning.

I don't know, but if any of this is an actual possibility and the Pats do plan on keeping Brady past next year, they'd better trade JG asap.

This is truly a hypothetical question by the OP, because the Browns arent really being put in that position. IF they ONLY had the #1 overall pick in the 1st round, and not another pick #12, then yes if you feel he's the guy, you do it. But since they have #12 also, they can say the #1 overall is off limits. Garoppolo isn't gonna make them a playoff contender, so they can groom a draftable QB if they can't get him for #12 and other picks.

I agree, but only if you're DAAAAMMMNNNN sure that the QB you're trading for is going to the The Guy

This is the correct answer. If JG really is - at least in the Browns' estimation - a true franchise QB, then you need to be willing to trade the #1 overall pick for him.

The problem is that JG is not signed after 2017. So Cleveland would need to get permission from the Patriots to work out a contract extension with JG first, which is certainly a possibility.

Moreover, maybe Cleveland thinks, "Well, we can keep the #1, and if the Patriots, as seems more and more likely, don't trade him, we can just throw insane heaps of cash at him after the 2017 season and get Myles *AND* Garoppolo."

Yup. Assuming I thought he was *the* guy, I could get him to sign a 5 year deal and that I had the tools around him for him to succeed and a system in which he could excel.

The problem is I think it's a dicey proposition from a PR standpoint. Fans love their first rounders and the #1 overall is the compensation the fans get for enduring an awful season. You trade that #1 for a backup from a team whose backups haven't lit the world on fire and if that backup doesn't turn into a bona fide winner you're ****ed, the fans will hate you until the end of time.

Seriously - whether they realize it or not I think fans would rather see a team draft a bust than trade for one.

But apparently the Patriots will only consider this trade for #1 overall. Cleveland has allegedly (via reports) been offering a package of picks to no avail. And it may be that, from the Patriots perspective, they have a deep, stacked roster, so they would prefer a superstar player.

Makes sense. If Garret is as good as advertised he basically transforms the Pats defense into one of similar caliber as the Broncos defense that dragged the corpse of Peyton Manning to a Super Bowl victory.

With a defense that good it wouldn't matter who the QB was if worst came to worst.

So, basically BB is probably thinking if Brady goes down and I have JG Pats can still compete for the Super Bowl. So he wants to make sure that whatever ever assets he gets in trade allow him to still compete for a Super Bowl.

Out of all the blockbuster trades that have involved high #1 picks for an active player, how many have actually panned out for the team that gave up their draft pick. I tend to think not many if any at all.

I said YES because of the clause in your poll "if you thought he was going to be great" Who wouldn't?
The real issue is that GMs etc. do not know how good JAG is or how good or great vs 16+ game/year NFL competition he'd be.
I would NOT trade my #1 overall for a good NFL QB like a Carson Palmer but I would instantly trade it for a Brees, a Peyton Manning, a Rthlsbrgr, a Wilson, etc. Those guys win championships or at the least get you there, where anything may happen. The final result always has a mixture of chaos theory & luck.

I'd trade JAG for #12 and their 2nd or equivalent.
Keep JAG for less than a first plus.

I've been impressed by what I've seen from Jimmy. If I felt strongly that he'd continue his success and viewed Garrett as solid but not can't miss or otherworldly, then I'd absolutely do the trade.

I voted no because from my limited point of view, trading the top choice for a QB with a small track record is almost as risky as drafting a QB. I'd probably try and get a nice little ransom for the top pick instead from someone else, although I certainly hope the current gm of the Browns does trade the first overall to us.
