Uhhh did you just become a patriots fan?

That's the way they do business. So he should get special treatment because he made one play 3 years ago? Yeah, he's a good players, but he's not Ty Law. He needs to accept the fact that he's actually not getting screwed AT ALL

I honestly think butler is a number 2 CB and the pats appear to feel the same way.

Where did I at he was getting screwed? I have stated all along that I want him to stay, I don't blame the Patriots for doing what they are doing, but I also don't blame Butler (or his agent) for doing what they are doing.

Butler's strategy is clearly to get a top-deal right now or wait a year and get it in 2018. For some reason, some people in here see his agent as being a babbling moron for doing something that we see athletes do all the time in all sports.

I disagree, but I also agree he is not really an elite #1 corner due to his size. He would either be a 1A, or I think he would be a Chris Harris type, where he typically covers the slot guy or sometimes acts as a "number two" although it has more to do with matching up with the quicker guys while Talib plays the more physical press coverage against traditional outside receivers. In terms of talent level though, and what he adds to the defense, again similarities to Chris Harris, nobody considers Harris to be a #2 corner, since that implies his skill level is a notch below #1s.

I don't believe for one second that they told him that. They paid Revis way more than that for 1 year. They probably said they wouldn't pay Butler more than 10 mil/yr.
IIRC we paid Revis 7mil for first year and the next year mil. The contract was structured for 2 years, basically it was 12 mil year.

Great attitude.

"Hey you!!! Super Bowl hero!!! Top-10 CB in the NFL!!! You get the **** out of here!!!!"
Is it hard to understand that without that attitude BB has, Butler couldnt be SB hero!!!!! It s cold hard business

LOL. Of course, people coming out of the wood work to diminish Butler as a player because he might be leaving NE. He had two stellar seasons in a row as our main guy. He has played like a top 10 corner.

Get out of here with this 'he's a #2 CB' bull ****. Bet you weren't saying that a few weeks ago.

We can debate whether or not Butler is a top 12, top 15, or top 20 corner, but he did provide a level of physicality and heart that will be missed, if/when they move on.

Gimme a break. FYI I've always felt butler was a 2 corner. If butler can hang with the best WRs in the league with no safety help then maybe it's different. Do you honestly feel comfortable putting butler on an island by himself against the top receivers?

Late 1st rounder & LB Stephone Anthony?:D
Good God NOOOOO!!! I live in the New Orleans area and trust me when I tell you Stephone Anthony is not that good. He is a good athletic player, but doesn't recognize things until it is too late. I'm pretty sure Mr. Pherein can back me up on this.

They may want to looking at Loomis' draft record. I'd be pretty comfortable trading away most of the draft lol.
Loomis was pretty bad at drafting. You think Bill has whiffed on a couple of second round draft picks? Ask any Saints fan about CB Baptiste who was taken in the second round a few years ago. The only reason he wasn't cut coming out of training camp was he was a second round pick. If he was a 7th rounder, he would have been long gone. Loomis (or one of his co-horts) acknowledged at the time Baptiste was a "project". You don't burn a second round pick on a "project". Well, thankfully for Saints fans, Loomis is no longer doing the draft. The heavy lifting is being done by Jeff Ireland. They had a pretty good draft last year with Ireland pulling the levers...

Chris Harris's a very good corner in man to
man. He covers on the outside man to man as well. I think he get's lost in that great donkeys secondary.

The donkeys secondary was the best in the nfl last season. I hope it takes a step back this season.

The tits and the saints where in the bottom 3 in pass defense last season. Saints and tits make sense.

Gilmore/Butler/Rowe is comparable to Talib/Harris/Roby. Can't wait to watch a shutdown secondary in NE this year! Keep Butler!

If nobody gives up the first needed to sign him, def keep him. 4 mill is a steal. That'd be like trading Chandler Jones in the last year of his rookie contract before the expensive option year. Get your money's worth.

@pfcentral
I can confirm four teams have contacted New England about dealing their first round pick for Malcolm Butler. One team is in AFC East.
Biggest holdup? Giving up their 1st and having to pay such a lucrative contract .

Well, no duh! :) Welcome to RFA 4 other teams.

$4 million is also almost negligible in the event he holds out. It's worth it to bank on being able to keep him happy enough to play well and be engaged in the season, assuming no one wants to sign him.

There's also the remote possibility that Butler becomes discouraged at the lack of a market with the tender and accept a deal in the $6-7 million per year range and the Patriots match it. That would be a masterful chess move on the Patriots' part.

I'm really liking how they're handling their free agents this off season... Let pieces fall into place, cover your ass and hope you get a bit lucky in terms of circumstances so you can either grab that extra first rounder or make Butler sweat enough to accept a less prolific deal.

If he's not signed and holds out, you're only out the $4 million.

Actually, if he holds out the Pats wouldn't have to pay him anyway, right?

The story was brilliant. the undrafted FA with no hope of a contract turning up for trial with patriots and becoming superbowl hero. looked after by first time agent that was trying to break into the NFL. Shame his representation has effed him up.
Had Mr simpson been here before maybe we don't have this scenario.
