Unless the Patriots have other assets to trade, the Cooks deal has sealed Garoppolo's fate

If they don't trade him they will keep him. Simple as that. You won't find better value with the browns. If brady was 33 he would have been dealt already.

There's also the fact that Jimmy G is already in his late 20's. Does a rebuilding team really want such a small window to get its **** together? Would you be happy picking up a 28YO when you might still be 3 years away from having a team to put around him? You tell me. I know QB's tend to age better than many positions but that still seems hella risky.

He's 25.

He turns 26 in November . That is not late 20s.

If he's smart , takes care of himself and stays injury free he has a solid 10+ year career as a starter

I honestly couldnt call it now either way. Team is stacked if ht is retained, sure you could always upgrade here and there with some quality picks but in the scenario of ht re-signing im more than fine having the picks we have.

That said , having the #12 is a huge value. You could turn that into 4-5 picks in round 1/2/higher part of 3. Very hard to turn down.
I think that with this team, quality will be more important than quantity. This is a very young and highly skilled team. Any rookie is going to have to beat out a veteran, and I would think it will be very difficult for them to do that. Rather, my guess is the Patriots will trade JG for a haul and use those picks for a few higher end picks. Possibly trading a few into next year and going up a round or some such.

Well if Brady is hurt and JG is gone then Jacoby will be the quarterback unless they get someone else.

Why does he look like he's either about to join ZZ Top, or part the Red Sea?

With the acquisition of Cooks from the Saints, the Patriots have (at this time) no draft capital in the first two rounds.

The Pats don't pick til 72 in 3rd round and have just 2 picks in first 117 selections.

Meanwhile, the Browns have EIGHT picks within the first two rounds between this year and next year

And with the surplus of draft picks the Browns have, this basically means Jimmy G. is as good as gone.....and honestly I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Didn't the Jets enter the 2014 draft with 12 picks and every one of them busted?

The moral of the story is- college players are complete unknowns. Trading picks for young players who have proven they can play in the NFL sounds pretty smart to me.

It's easy see BB's position here. He has the GOAT QB turning 40 this August. He has a promising young QB in the fold if the GOAT shows signs of age.

Why on Earth should he trade promising young QB for anything less than a sure fire blue chip prospect (top 5 pick) and why should he be willing to accept a bunch of lesser picks that are pretty much the equivalent of lottery "scratch tickets"?

I suppose if he gets enough "scratch tickets" some might hit but is it really worth the risk?

The Pats are in a situation unlike any other team. They have the organizational and coaching discipline to identify and implement a formula for winning year after year. As a result, they are in a position to have a very good idea how any proven, young player in the NFL will or will not fit into their way of doing things in a way that other teams don't.

It makes complete sense that there could be a year when Belichick decides that the proven values to be found via FA or Trade are more suited to what the team needs than the values in the Draft. The Pats didn't throw away their picks, they made a decision to use them based on their view of relative value and opportunity.

That said, no one knows what ultimately will come out of Belichick's brain. I don't see any logical necessity to an argument that his behavior to date suggests he's going to trade JG or any other player, but nothing he does would surprise me.

I agree with you on Jimmy being traded.

I have changed my mind on this because I feel Brady is here for another three years minimum. No way Jimmy will sign an extension to be a backup. No way the Pats give him a big contract to be a backup.

We need to get back into the first and second rounds of this loaded draft especially after we lost our first last year. The future is built on the draft. Those early rounders are vital

They carried Brissette on the roster late last year so he could get practice reps. If they thought Jimmy was going to be here long term they would have rather have had an extra positional player on the roster and IR'd Brissette.

Posting WRONG statements authoritatively makes for humorous reading.

Exactly. This is the conventional brand of thinking that becomes all the more enticing when you have a potential trade partner with as many draft picks as Cleveland has (including next year in 2018).

I don't see why so many posters disagree with this thread

Sometimes we over think things like I myself did at first. As BB started trading early draft picks away then I simplified my thinking and stopped looking beyond what was in front of my face. Brady is not being traded. Both cannot coexist beyond this year. Next year you get nothing for Jimmy. Square pegs do not go into round holes

Had an interesting exchange with Michael McDermott from PatsPulpit... he apparently thinks Butler would be a better trade chip than Garoppolo - whom he sees as a major necessity for emsuring Brady has insurance in a All-In, Win-Now 2017 season
