I think long-term story here is over for Butler.

Three scenarios probably remain:
1. CJ (traded in offseason)
2. JC (traded mid-season if mood interferes w field)
3. plays out the tender like a man and leaves for a high comp. pick

I am sorry for the kid, really like his game. But he must better understand his value.
MP and D-Mac helped more than he or his agent are willing to admit to themselves.


And his agent has a lot to learn..

I don’t post often, but in this case it seems that Malcolm is being poorly served by his counsel. I love everything about the kid, he is already in the Pats HOF in my view as executing the greatest play in our history.

I imagine him huddled with his “agent” being told sign the tender and you will be traded to NO and make bank. It really must seem a nightmare to a kid who has only given it all for the team that gave him a chance. If some reports are true he didn’t even know he was making 3.9 million this year!

I don’t buy nor have I seen any hint of disgruntlement. I would not be surprised if its all moving too fast and he has no idea what to do.

Malcolm, tell your idiot agent to make an agreement with the Nick/Bill that you sign the tender, play the season and see what next year brings.

I'm sure he would, but Gilmore waited for UFAand Butler is RFA. If you want the deal early you give up something, you don't get top dollar as a RFA, I think Butler is really deserving and as a pair they would have a great secondary, but Gilmore has actually waited five years and Butler three, it makes a difference.

Maybe, but it will be stupid. He's a really really good player but he has 3 seasons, which are really two, and the first rounders like Hightower, Jones, Gilmore etc... had to wait five years to hit the market, whereas Butler has really played two full seasons. Relatively speaking he hasn't had it that bad. That said he was huge for their Lombardi's and I appreciate it and hope he goes somewhere that pays him big if he doesn't decide to stay here.

On the record. I have considered him for about the last season and a half as middle of the pack of #1 corners i.e. In the range of 15-18 best.

Seriously, who knows what the truth is. This is all part of the negotiation process. But I would hate if were to trade him away. He's a Patriots legend, IMO.

IIRC his agent is a personal injury lawyer who has never negotiated a "big" contract.
Why hasn't the agent spoken to the Pats since last year. No talks since then????

Again I just disagree with the reasoning. No question that Butler has played great football for the Patriots, but it's really only been two seasons of play. The UFA's like Hightower and Gilmore were first round picks with an option that made them complete five seasons to go UFA, Butler has really played two and is a year from UFA, and while less than he wants can play for 4 million. I love him as a player and think he's a 12 million a year player, but he has to be UFA to have that leverage, and he's not, so if he wants tens of millions up front he has to do a team friendly deal with good guaranteed money.

You need to read and digest Ivan's post. My man Malcom's situation is NOT the same.
I wish him the best if he's not here but he needed to sign a discounted, year EARLY big money deal to make that happen.
