at #32 ? your going to get a kick ass LB, DE, or DT instead of one of the best proven WRs in the NFL ? Look , I dont really want this trade anymore but seems like a steal to me, Im starting to think.
Always interested in your imput, but this isn't about how good or bad Cook is as a player. It's about the value of the POSITION. Cook would be a wonderful LUXURY for the Pats, who would certainly add to an offense that is going to be one of league's top 5 regardless. You know that.
How many more wins will it provide?
That is the mantra that drives this team. On the other hand, I believe the impact of a quality DT, DE, LB or even CB prospect would have a greater long term impact on the team's success than ANY WR we brought in. It's just the nature of the offense and the fact the QB is Tom Brady.
Your team's offense has been effective regardless of who is catching the ball. That is the product of Peyton's offensive structure and Drew Brees' effectiveness. You should know better than most that your season might have been more impacted by another good defensive prospect last season than Cook if you had gone that way a few seasons ago. It's all about the wins and losses.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Pats offense would certainly be more exciting and explosive if Cooks were here, but would it result in more wins. OR would bringing in an explosive rookie on the defensive side of the ball have a greater long term impact.
Besides, while Cooks would be a relative bargain at 2 years for about $5MM/yr, there is no way BB is going to pay him whatever top WR's get ($13-15 I'm guessing) after that. So at best you have a 2 year rental as opposed to a defensive prospect at a position of much greater need that you control for 5 years. Granted there is a risk all draft picks bring, but a risk worth taking.
DISCLAIMER - It should be noted that I have always believed that WR's are the position that is the MOST easily replaceable, and their value and importance has always been over hyped by fans and the media. Winning the superbowl with the WR we won it with only proves the point. That's not to say our WR's sucked, but rather quality WR's who can help you win don't need to be first rounders. There are so many of them, they can be found all over the draft and beyond. So this belief obviously affects my thinking
