Floyd not working out?

Not open for further replies.
Floyd did not pass through waivers unclaimed.. The Patriots claimed him. And they claimed him because they had a need due to the fact that Amendola was injured and they only had Edelman and Mitchell healthy.. The other teams didn't want to shell out 1.2M for a player that probably wouldn't see the field for them since he'd have to learn their offense, which usually takes more than 3 weeks..

This has been covered ad nauseum in the numerous threads on this site about Floyd and whether he'd be back..

Anyone thinking that Floyd would do more than he did for the Patriots was smoking crack. He showed potential. His incarceration will end in June, before training camp, so he'll have plenty of time to get up to speed with whomever he signs with.

There are teams like the Giants, Titans, Redskins, Rams and Bengals who could take a flyer on Floyd.
Just a note, his incarceration will end in March. His 2 months of "home detention" will likely allow him to "go to work" and be active with whatever teamd signs him. (ie OTA's and/or off season training programs)

BTW- I still think the Pats will give him a competitive (if low and incentive based) offer. He has an unique skill set that the Pats don't have. As teams are tending to the Seattle/Falcon style of defense to attack the Pats O, we need to have a WR who doesn't neccessarily need to be "open" to throw him the ball (a la Gronk)

A 1 month tryout isn't enough to time to determine if someone "gets" this offense. If I were Floyd, I'd take anything the Pats offer on a one year deal. That is unlees Floyd himself believes that he'll never get this offense or they work too hard. But THAT is not what we seem to be getting from Floyd.

Conspiracy theory #23448 - Someone in the Pats organization leaked that info on Floyd to drive down his price and lessen the competition. It's subtle enough not to be insulting to Floyd, but with enough meat so the speculatiors will sumize that the Pats are ready to move on.

I don't think there is any leak, or even any news.
Reiss is giving his opinion, and stated that Floyd wasn't always on the same pages as he RUSHED TO LEARN THE OFFENSE.
Who would be?

I totally agree with this.

I don't know that Floyd is the right guy for this team, but looking down the road, I think there's real need at WR.

- Amendola is 31 and needs to take a pay cut to stay here. His contract is also up after 2017.

- Edelman is 30 and has taken some hellacious hits during his career so while we all love the guy, I don't really know how long he can be considered our #1 WR. Plus, as you point out, his contract is up after next season.

- Hogan is solid but is 28 and is signed through 2018.

- Mitchell is young and on a rookie contract and seems like the real deal but sometimes receivers regress after their first season. Wouldn't count my chickens with him quite yet, though I'm very optimistic.

If Floyd can get the system and be paid a reasonable contract, that's definitely something I'd like the Pats to pursue.

Agree on Floyd. I can't believe the nay-saying Cousins out there. We are one play away of being in trouble at WR. This is crazy talk to not offer a flyer to a kid who has potential to be a star. He's not Moss but has size we never get here. Hogan is close but plays a different role.

If we loose Bennet, you have one surgery recovering bigger target receiver in Gronk. Gronk is a TE but how many times did Bennet and Gronk flex wide. Could not Floyd take that role? Aaron Hernandez was a small TE would could not block. I have seen Floyd block and he's not bad. He is bigger than Hernandez. How about thoughts on that flex spot?
What does BB say about playing numerous positions?

You have Edelman and Dola who play with reckless abandon toward their body and are 30 and 31 years old . You have Hogan and Mitchel who were both dinged so nether of them are iron men. Deep? No so you notice.

You have to look at the game sample in just a few weeks to see the potential of Floyd.

There was a WR from the Vikings named Carter who made the Hall of Fame who got cut by the Eagles for the same drinking foolishness. The change of Teams turned his life around.

The big knock on him was a tipped ball on a slant. He'd been on the Team two weeks. Edelman had a tip against the Texans....same thing?

If you can get Floyd on a prove it with incentives, who is better. Jackson at $14mm? Garcon at about the same? Boldin at almost 40 years old? Stills at about $12MM.

Might as well get a DA, JE replacement in the bullpen like Cooper Kupp or maybe a Josh Reynolds later on.

One thing that concerns me with mitchell' s a sophomore slump. We have seen it before.

I like reynolds alot. He would be nice value in the 4th or 5th round.

"Floyd not working out"??? Did the warden tell Reiss Floyd's weight lifting privileges had been revoked? ;-)

Has anyone mentioned the Charlie Weis connection yet? THAT right there, to me, answers any speculation of whether Michael Floyd can "learn the system":

Charlie Weis says Michael Floyd already knows 75 precent of Patriots' verbiage

Knowing the verbiage is not remotely the same as being able to see the coverage and come to the same conclusions that Brady comes to when he reads the coverage. So sure, Floyd may know what options are available to him. But that knowledge doesn't help him much if he doesn't choose the correct one of those options based on the coverage he sees.

Understood, but Weis thinks it's at least a significant foundation to have.
He may or may not have a future with the Pats, but I'll take Weis' words and give them some consideration.

That's about not being a deer in the headlights trying to get on the field in the first week or 2 here.
If he doesn't know 100% of the verbiage by now, he won't be offered a contract.

We are kinda loaded at wide out with Edelman, Hogan, Dola, and Mitchell. I don't think I'd re sign if I were Floyd.

Dola always gets hurt. We could use him. A 3m prove it deal. If he tears **** up with Brady over 8 games maybe extend him to a bigger deal. However that is unlikely.

I hope he is back, and if he gets on the same page with Brady that could be fun to watch.

Wast this obvious from the moment he was deactivated foe the last two games? Sometimes guys click with Brady, others, not. With Floyd, they were hoping there would be immediate chemistry since he came from a similar system with Weiss. Nearly caused two INTs against Houston by running bad routes. It's not that he couldn't make it here, it's just like Reiss says, how much energy and money will you put into this guy when he failed to pass his initial "tryout"?

I cant say for sure but he barely practiced and didn't know the playbook.. and he had legal matters hanging over his head. I think with a full training camp and pre season, he could be great.

But he is a risk. Alcohol can be very hard to quit.

Thread title is confusing. Not working out can mean a couple different things.

I think Mitchell is going to be a big player on the team. I don't see a sophomore slump from him. He is smart, has great speed and he will get better at route running. He also has huge hands and can snatch the ball easily which is a huge advantage for certain routes.

Like everybody else, I really like the kid. One thing that appears to me, though, and I realize I'm being nitpicky here, but he seems a bit slight and not overly strong. He doesn't seem the 'fight for the extra yardage' type of strong receiver. I know people here compare him to David Givens alot, but Givens had much more strength. Perhaps this will come with age.

Currently Floyd is not allowed to leave Arizona for the duration of the post-jail home detention part of his sentence. He has to ask the court for permission to let him leave the state. I have less than zero idea how likely or not permission would be granted if asked for.

Floyd can't leave Arizona unless motion filed

Way to come through with the latest updates. Thank you.

That's pretty much the nail in the coffin for Floyd and the NEP, unless they can agree to a one year deal at a minimal cost. Missing the entire offseason program isn't going to sit well, but with Floyd's upside, they could still take a shot on him with a full training camp. I highly doubt it, though.

No Givens was definitely built bigger but Givens never had the speed that Mitchell has.

Well, for all we know it's routine for judges to grant such requests . Anyone here an Arizona DUI lawyer?
