Report: surgery for Gronk

fair enough, but i obviously disagree. what routes did we want him running, exactly? he got hurt two weeks ago running a seam up the middle. so nothing over the middle, no deep balls... just 10 yard outs?

No.

He should not have even been in the stadium Sunday, first of all.

This is a guy with an exceptionally long injury history. They knew Gronkowski's injury history. They should have rested him to get him closer to 100% for the playoff stretch drive. They won this game without him and with a 60% Brady (another issue altogether - a 100% Garropolo would have made this game an easier win for the Pats). We are lucky Sheldon Richardson consciously decided not to do his job and knock him into retirement on that LeGarrette Blount run.

Throwing Gronkowski out there on deep routes merely compounded the gamble that already existed.

Throwing him out there on deep routes just compounded the risk.

BS. The injuries had nothing to do with each other and if he can't run a post pattern, fall down with a 200lb DB on top of him and can't not get injured he might as well retire.

The New England Patriots and the Gronkowski family are providing the following update regarding Rob Gronkowski’s recent injuries:

During the Seattle game on November 13, Rob sustained a hit to the chest that resulted in a pulmonary contusion to his lung. Rob was examined by several specialists at Massachusetts General Hospital as directed by the team, as well as an independent physician. He received medical clearance to return to play two weeks later for the New York Jets game on November 27. After a hit early in the Jets game, Rob began to experience significant back and leg pain. This injury forced him to leave the game and he did not return. With the help of the Patriots medical staff, along with the consultation of several medical experts, it has been determined that it is in Rob’s best long-term interest to undergo surgery to address his lower back injury. Rob is expected to have surgery tomorrow. We do not expect that he will be able to play for the remainder of the 2016 season, but will await the results of tomorrow’s surgery before making a final determination. Rob has always been one of our hardest workers and was voted captain for the leadership he provides on our team. We are deeply saddened any time a player is lost to injury. We are committed to assisting Rob throughout his recovery and look forward to his return to playing football for the New England Patriots.

Update on Rob Gronkowski

I will repeat - - of COURSE it wasn't the same injury.

As mentioned before, athletes who sustain an injury and come back too early risk other injury to OTHER body parts when they compensate for the prior injury. Hence, my earlier example of pitchers throwing out their arms when coming back from leg injury or (as I remember as a kid) Carlton Fisk ripping his groin when he came back too soon from a broken leg in the 70's.

And to your point "if he can't run a post pattern, fall down with a 200lb DB on top of him and can't not get injured he might as well retire"
1) he was hurt BEFORE hitting the ground (obvious from the aforelinked footage of him turtling his arms in mid air)
2) I happen to think he was a pretty good weapon and wouldn't be so cavalier about showing him the door because he is prone to injury on fly or bomb patterns. He did enough other things well enough that they could have worked around that for a game or two until he was closer to 100%.

You have no medical evidence pointing to his chest injury or compensating for it contributing to his back injury.

Based on the 974 doctors who looked at him, they didn't think he'd blow out his back because he hurt his chest.

However you want to slice it, whether it be singular or a combination of genetics, body size/shape, anatomic structure, flexibility and his style of play, Gronk is more susceptible to injury than other players.

He got cleared by the medical staff and some independent guys. If he is cleared he can play, there is not more to discuss. We are not talking a hamstring that can linger on but about a lung injury that according to a couple medical experts was healed enough to let him play professional football.

Age.

I'm 45 and in pretty good shape. Stuff just happens.

TBH, I think TB12 is on to something. As you get older your body loses flexibility and the ability to heal and recover quickly from injury. I'm seriously considering doing yoga or some kind of stretching instead of running or other exercise.

How my body will function at 60 scares the hell out of me. Corpses will have more flexibility.
stretching/yoga will do wonders for you. People mistakenly avoid stretching/exercise when they have minor aches and that just makes it worse.

I understand that.

However, there is also coaching staff judgement. Was he 100%? or even close. Was THIS game more important than the stretch drive or playoffs.

Once someone is of a certain age, the law "clears" them to gamble in casinos. Some do it prudently and some go hog wild and repeatedly make the same mistakes in casinos.

How many times have we seen this issue with Gronkowski?

Given this guy's previous re-injury history why was there a screaming need to have him play and run repeated deep routes 8 days after he couldn't get on a plane and didn't have a full week of practice?

I agree that he shouldn't have been out there. Once he's out there, I don't have a big problem with what they did.

Waking up today and remembering that he's actually gone for the season sucked.

He was cleared to play. If this team acted like the ****ies you want them to we would be a very healthy 6-10 team.

Because he was recovered from that injury and he is a football player.

Yep. I stretch well before I run or play hoop so I dont exactly have rigamortis but obviously yoga is a whole different ballgame

Again, your emphasis on deep routes doesn't make sense to me whatsoever. Those are among the least risky things Gronk does when he is on the field.

Personally, I would have preferred to keep him out until the Ravens game but will not criticize the coaching staff for playing a cleared player especially in an important division game.

I thought they tried to limit risk by playing him less inline and in the middle of the field. Like @robertweathers said.. can't really blame anyone if he suffers a ruptured disc because of a 200lb DB landing on him. More brutal hits are occurring during run blocking all the time.

Let's cut the bickering for a moment and pray for a successful surgery and a good, speedy recovery.

Get better and get some rest big guy!

I disagree..but admit I have no data to back me up..BUT from watching, it does seem like receivers go down often with injuries after running deeper routs and laying out for the ball. Didn't Gronk break his arm on a deep sideline throw?.

I'd argue he broke his arm on the PAT and rebroke it due to the plate when he landed awkwardly on it.

I honestly don't understand how you can think that stretching out on deep balls is more dangerous than any of the blocking or middle of the field stuff Gronk is doing.

Any run play where he was blocking inline I was holding my breath for nobody to fall sideways or from behind into his legs or back. Similarly, on any of the vintage seam routes I was holding my breath for him not to be tackled at knee level.

Gronk and his family should sue Chancelor and Goodell. This is a career threatening injury. It would not shock me if Goodell ordered the hit on Gronk. That man is evil.

NEVERMIND. SUE GOODELL. EEI SAID THAT THIS INJURY HAPPENED AGAINST THE JETS...GOODELL'S MINIONS...THE MAN IS EVIL, AND THEY WERE DESPERATELY TRYING TO INJURE BRADY TOO.

Really hate this "he shouldn't have been out there" hindsight stuff.

This injury had zero to do with the chest injury. Pats could have held him out until the playoffs and then on the first drive of the playoffs this exact thing could have happened. So what would be the hindsight table pounding then? Should have held him out another week?
