Tom Brady removed the nfl* decal from his helmet (update: Brady says he was unaware of it)

Where are you people reading that Florio claimed that the league declined to comment?

Is that what you get from his sentence reading "PFT has requested comment from the league?" (for an article posted at 9pm)

I wonder if he's daring the NFL to assess him the true $8,000 fine for an "equipment violation?". If so, it's kind of brilliant on his part.

That was absolutely on my mind. If they did, that would prove deflategate was just a witch hunt. You can bet he already has a carefully written statement that he will deliver if they are dumb enough to bite.

Being right handed, wouldn't he have the knife in his right hand? But it makes sense that's how he somehow cut himself.
Tom is one of those people that does things with both hands. For example he writes with his left.

Of course he didn't. Peyton Manning's wife ordered a decal for Peytie's forehead and some Frisco sleazeball snuck into the 49ers lockeroom and sliced the decal off Kaep's helmet with a razor blade. Brady , however, has been VIDEOTAPED removing the NFL decal from HIS helmet while laughing maniacally at a stolen autographed by Peytie photo of Der Scumissioner pinned on a dartboard, according to ace reporter and courageous cancer survivor, Mort Shytbag. Looks bad for Tom but we'll just have to wait until the coming court decision is announced...

I bet no one know who the picture is of. It wasn't lost on me!

Always makes me wonder why these dollar amounts are so random.

Might be a tax code thing.

Pretty sure the US Courts said Goodell can use article 46 to do anything he likes.

And sad thing is Goodell would have a better, and more logical, case for suspending you for wearing clothes that harm the image of the NFL than for Deflategate.
How can you harm the image of the NFL when you can't see it?

It's a tough logical problem.

It gets better...sort of.

Here are the list of penalties as it applies to equipment:

Penalties:

  1. For violation of this Section 4 discovered during pregame warm-ups or at other times prior to the game, player will be advised to make appropriate correction; if the violation is not corrected, player will not be permitted to enter the game.
  2. For violation of this Section 4 that is discovered while player is in the game, and which involves the competitive or player safety aspects of the game (e.g., illegal kicking toe of shoe, an adhesive or slippery substance, failure to wear mandatoryequipment), player will be removed from the game until he has complied.
  3. For any other violation of this Section 4 (e.g., wristbands that are not League-approved, towel with a personal message, impermissible headwear under the helmet) that is discovered while the player is in the game, player will be advised to make appropriate correction at the next change of possession; if the violation is not corrected, player will not be permitted to enter the game.
  4. For violation of this Section 4 detected in the bench area: Player and head coach will be asked to remove the objectionable item, properly equip the player, or otherwise correct the violation. The involved player or players will not be permitted to enter the game until the player has complied.
  5. For illegal entry or return of a player suspended under this Section 4: Loss of five yards from succeeding spot and removal until properly equipped after one down. See 3-33.
  6. For repeat violation: Disqualification from game.
Note 1: In addition to the game-day penalties specified above, the Commissioner may subsequently impose independent disciplinary action on the involved player, up to and including suspension from the team’s next game—preseason, regular season, or postseason, whichever is applicable.

Note 2: If a player is suspended for having adhesive or slippery substances on his body, equipment, or uniform, he must remain out of the game for one play, even if there is a team time out, the two-minute warning, or the end of a period.

Note 3: If a player (kicker) is suspended for having an illegal kicking shoe, he must remain out of the game for one play, unless there is a team time out, the two-minute warning, or the end of the period.

---
So essentially Brady is daring Goodell to suspend him since the rule book states the violation would be no worse than up to one game, which would be an inconsistent punishment. And can you imagine Goodell trying to break that by attempting to suspend him four more games over a sticker? That would unleash a firestorm that would be unreal.

Needless to say, this is going to get interesting.
I agree , Ian. Tom thought this through. This was not something he chose to do on a whim.

Action or inaction by the league, he wins. What he actually won is unclear.

I'm assuming the league will send him a letter providing notice of the potential penalty.

I think it's because the original amounts negotiated were round numbers, so to speak, and as subsequent CBAs were negotiated the amounts changed/were raised based upon an agreed percentage. For example, if a violation originally carried a $1,250 fine and the next CBA called for a 5.5% across the board increase, that fine would then be $1,318.75. That's my guess.

Good as guess as any.

Is it not so amusing that we (not just Pat fans, but all fans) talk as much about football off the field as on it? Since when did Goodell, the owners and the referees need to become part of the action? I realize the game is big and we have a huge passion for it, but the over saturation (especially since it's rarely good) doesn't help.

OK.

If you're reading this right...and I have no reason to believe that you aren't...by removing the "Shield" from his helmet Brady has essentially reproduced the "Equipment Violation" that Kaepernick would have committed by removing the "Flag" from his helmet?

And...it gets better...

As a result, Brady is more or less daring Dear Old Roger to levy the same fine on Brady for removing the Omissioner's precious Shield from one helmet as he would levy on Kaepernick for removing the Stars and Stripes from another helmet...while, as an added bonus, reminding people that Brady's now debunked alleged deflation of footballs was nothing more than an Equipment Violation in the first place, punishable by an $8,000 fine?

Right?

That is sheer ****ing genius!

!
No it's not. It gives Goodell the impetus to levy additional punishments, claiming he's a "repeat offender". A defense might be that it's preseason and an exhibition game so it's not an official game. The courts have pretty much given Goodell unfettered power and now you want to tweak him and give him the opportunity to f*ck the team again? We don't have ownership who backs the players and it's like asking for more punishment... Maybe I espouse the Teddy Roosevelt philosophy of " speak softly and carry a big stick" by letting his actions on the field speak volumes and not this type of action. While it might feel god on a visceral level, it is asking for more unneeded problems.
A better solution would be to wear a T shirt with whatever expression you want (" Integrity- that who speak of it don't have it) under his game jersey.. When he takes off his uniform in the locker room and is interviewed, it is visible to the press and likely to be photographed.... You're not breaking the rules but getting your point across in protest..

Why does my gut tells me that a registered letter went out from 345 PArk avenue telling him that if this continues when he returns, there will be further punishment, because " they can."?

I just recently watched Cool Hand Luke for the first time and see a lot of the Captain in Goodell. Hopefully this will end better for Tom than it did for Luke...

They have to do something. A letter to Tom and team kindly reminding them of the league's policy would be appropriate.

Now if they only did that back in January of 2015....

I agree with that.

No. They said when it came to things that fall into his jurisdiction. Wearing a shirt while not at an NFL function isn't covered by the rules of conduct no matter how much Goodell might wish it.

Otherwise, Goodell would have to suspend Kaepernick for the Castro shirt he wore..
If he deems it conduct detrimental he has free reign.
