The big deal is:
(a) the team issued a joint statement with the player on the player's injury -- when has that ever happened before? Totally at odds with the team's standard operating procedure. So that's a big deal.
(b) the player put out a video where he stressed several times that he's not playing until he's 100%. No matter how you spin that, it's putting himself ahead of the team. Especially since no-one's 100% at this point and plenty of the team's stars have played at less than 100% many times. You can believe that's justified or you can believe otherwise, but it's still putting himself ahead of the team. And he did so publicly, which is also rare and hence a big deal.
(c) the team only has a 0.5 game lead for HFA. And (say) 80% of the player is still a huge help to the team.
That said, I'm on board with staying out until playing won't mean a meaningfully higher risk of reinjuring it than the "normal" playing football injury risk, but after that I do have a problem, especially with the team in a dogfight for HFA and a bye.
