The Texans already have a good back up who has won a playoff game - TJ Yates. Yates is a big hard-throwing guy like Mallett who is content to hold the clipboard, collect a cap friendly salary that is more money than most us will ever make in a year, and work hard. Why would they want Mallett?
They would want Mallett if (big word for just two letters) they feel he's more than just a 'good backup'.
Really, the key in any talks about Mallett is how coaches/GMs view him. I know that a lot of people like to toss out the "first round talent!" claim, but he went in the 3rd round. We can't really get a bead on that year's crop, either, because the talent is so widely placed.
Cam Newton
Jake Locker
Blaine Gabbert
Christian Ponder
Andy Dalton
Colin Kaepernick
Ryan Mallett
Ricky Stanzi
T.J. Yates
Nathan Enderle
Tyrod Taylor
Greg McElroy
Kaepernick and Newton are clearly the best of that draft class, to date. In between them, Gabbert and Ponder have been busts, and Locker and Dalton have been inconsistent QBs who hurt their teams as much as they help them. Where does Mallett fit in the group?
That's the $64,000 question.
