Pats fans suffering from 'playoff fatigue'

“I can’t justify it,” the North End resident said. “I don’t want to spend $300 or $400 to watch a game they may very well lose. I’d rather see Justin Timberlake and Jay Z. I know I won’t freeze — or go home disappointed.”

This guy probably boos when the Pats are down 3-0.

I hope these type of fans sell their tickets to people that will scream, chear, and help the pats defend their home turf. Stay home please.

The excitement comes from the fact that they very well could lose.

So, in summation:

The BOSTON GLOBE is tired of Bob Kraft's and the Patriots' success.

What I've mostly gotten from this thread (without clicking on the links and adding to the Globe's status or revenue in any way) are 2 things I knew going in: 1) that The Boston Globe still sucks, and 2) rlcarr really likes a lot of what's posted on patsfans.com.

Other than that I'll just say that yes, I'm a little nervous too about the potential of having my heart broken again this weekend, but d**mit it's Tom Brady in a playoff game - Just how many of these do you think we have left in our lifetime?! Where else would I be but screaming my lungs out for the Pats this Saturday? And if I lived in NE and had a chance to go??

Justin Timberlake, give me a freakin break :mmph:

There's some truth to this, I think. It happens.

I went to the Superbowl in 04...Houston was half-Pats/half-Panthers. Great atmosphere.

In 05, Eagles' fans greatly outnumbered us. If you crossed the river into downtown Jacksonville wearing pats gear, you were taking your life into your hands.

Going into the stadium, all you could hear was "Soar, Eagle, Soar," or whatever that stupid song they sing is called.

My friends at the game told me it was the reverse of 01, where Pats fans dominated Rams fans (who had been at the Superbowl the year before).

I would agree about the numbers, but it's more economics than anything. It costs a lot to go to playoff games and Super Bowls. Many people just cannot afford to do it every year. Plus, the weather forecast may make some folks who were on the fence about attending the game in person (finance-wise) tip the scales in favor of staying home in front of the big screen tv. The Pats game will get a great tv rating tomorrow night. Just because people have decided not to go in person for a variety of reasons doesn't mean they aren't interested in the game. That's why the label "fatigue" does not fit in my book.

Thank you! My bachelor's degree is actually in Sport Management, and the first thing they did in the freshman intro class is define what "sport" is. The most important piece was "An uncertain outcome". That's what makes sport so enticing, you MIGHT go home disappointed, which makes the victories so much sweeter.

How can the outcome be "uncertain"?

YOUR team, YOU know, the one you FANBOYS root for???? The one owned by AMOS ALONZO KRAFT???? They are going to cruise through another playoffs against the usual PARADE OF THE TOMATO CANS. That's why any REAL Bostonian can't get excited about any of this. It's only another 5 weeks until the moving vans pack up the clubhouse at Fenway and then everyone's attention will return to where it should be. Where it's ALWAYS been. With the team your father rooted for, your grandfather rooted for and all your important ancestors before that.

......OK, I feel like I really need to take a shower now.

That's unreal to read. "They very well could lose." No ****; it's the playoffs, *******!

Agreed. He's literally saying he only supports the team when they win.

Typical globe bull ****.

Reading that crap, you would think the region couldn't give a rats ass about the game. But according to that paper its only bout the baseball team....

Could it be possible that secondary vendor (stub hub) ticket sales are down because it is supposed to rain sideways tomorrow?

Not that that itself should stop anyone from going to the game (I went to the week 17 Buffalo game), but when you are going to drop $500+ on a game, it could be a factor.

THANK GOD, Bruce Allen chimes in for actual sanity!

Here's today's lead off on Boston Sports Media Watch ? Watching The New England Sports Media Since 2002

"Are you dreading the game tomorrow night?
Have you attended playoff games in the past, just so you could post on Facebook that you were there?
Are you decidedly not attending just because you think the Patriots are going to lose?
Would you rather attend at Justin Timberlake/Jay-Z concert (at Fenway Park) than go to a Patriots playoff game?.....
....Yes, that’s real, courtesy of the local baseball paper, YOUR Boston Globe.
Lest you think I’m making this up, all those items are really in the article...."

More from the always excellent Bruce Allen…

Did you also know that Montana and the 49ers had three straight one-and-done postseasons in the mid-80?s? In the prime of his career. Montana’s passer rating for those games was 65.6, 34.2 and 42.0. He threw ZERO touchdowns and four interceptions.
Will you hear that on Felger and Mazz? No.

Sounds like one of the negative nancy's who post in the game thread.

No, in summation:

During a prolonged down time in the U.S. economy, something which happens in every successful sporting situation (a percentage of fans becoming jaded or less willing to pay the cost to see the same thing over and over again) is happening a bit more noticeably and dramatically in the New England area.

......and the Least Surprising Post of the Year Award goes to........

Hmmmmm........don't recall this kind of article being published in the Globe Lifestyle section during the baseball playoffs this year.

I guess the New England economy was far healthier 9 weeks ago.

You do realize that we've had stories about the Red Sox attendance being down for the past couple of seasons, right? It's not as if it was something that wasn't being talked about with some frequency. There were also discussions about the fan base being less rabid following the 2 WS wins. Whether there were Globe articles or not, I can't tell you. I stopped reading the Globe when they set up the internet pay wall years back.

The economy was certainly warmer and drier. And didn't come just after dropping a million bucks on xmas presents.

Mindless drivel. If this is the sort of crap the Boston Globe is going to dream up now that billionaire John Henry owns the paper, I'm going to have to reconsider buying a brick at Fenway Park.

Boston Globe = Dan Shaughnessy = Boston Red Sox = Joe Sullivan = Late Will McDonough (Friend of Whitey Bulger, Enemy of Bob Kraft)

The masses take what they read at face value and don't understand the business/social background to all that.

Of course they will publish a piece like this on the eve of the Patriots first playoff game.

Should one expect anything different from The Globe?

The Globe also has an article about the Patriots soldiering on from Ben Volin. How does he fit into your Red Sox conspiracy?

I love, love who you list the Curly-Haired Boyfriend as if he is a Red Sox shill. That is beyond clueless. He recently released a tell-all book with Francona, after the Red Sox fired hm. He accused Ortiz of using steroids as well. The Red Sox hate the guy.
