Well, that's why we call'em "mediots", now isn't it...

He's an irrelevant joke.

If he is so impartial and has no rooting interest, then why has he been hounding Bob Kraft and his family for 20 years as if they killed his dog?

My biggest problem with the negative nancies in the media (or amongst the fans), isn't that they're saying something negative about the team. It's that they're often so damn SMUG about it.

It can never be, "The Patriots didn't do a good enough job in the red zone. I don't agree with the plays that McDaniels called."

No, it has to be, "We're never going to be a good red zone team again as long as McDaniels is the OC. Real good hire there, Belichick "

In short, I don't have a problem with Shaugnessy because he doesn't polish Patriot knob. I have a problem with him because he's an *******.

A while back, Shaughnessy opined in print that Adrian Gonzalez was not popular in the Red Sox clubhouse because "no one likes a know-it-all."

Pot ... kettle ... black.

Not too long after that, I figured out that life is better when I don't waste my time with any of Shaughnessy's nonsense. As some point, the Boston Globe will realize that Dan is a lazy fraud who has been stealing their money for years and that he has increasingly become a reason not to buy the paper.

Last year Shank wrote one of his classically lazy "cleaning out the closet" columns. In it he made a quick, critical reference to Channel 4 replacing DeOssie with Fauria on Patriots Game Day show. He said that it was because DeOssie had the nerve to root for his son, the Giants' long-snapper, in the SB against the Patriots. Well, most people know it was more complicated than that and that DeOssie's comments at a Giants pregame rally went much further than rooting for his son. Well, I emailed Shank and took him to task for intentionally misrepresenting the situation to his readers. I included my name and phone number with the email and about 15 minutes after sending it, Shank actually called me. To make a long story short, he claimed to have no knowledge of the Giants rally part of the story. When I expressed skepticism about that claim, he acknowledged that "maybe (he) had heard something about it but couldn't remember." What a lying phony.

That's because, taken on its own and without context, it makes valid points about a columnist's job. Without the context of how Shaughnessy actually goes about his job, it is 100% correct. Without that context it is a textbook explanation of a columnist's job.

But context is everything — and the context here is that people dislike Shaughnessy not because he's "all about the story," but because he's not. They hate him because he's all about smugness, self-righteousness, smugness, the big ol' gotcha and smugness. He really has no insight — and seldom any story — to offer.

Being the season of goodwill to all men and all that I'll hold my counsel.

Na'h screw it.

Up yours CHB.

It's sports. The thought of a writer or announcer following a team for thirty years and not caring if they win or lose, in fact hoping they lose, is absurd.

Even in the Whitehouse, some writers are critical odf certain Presidents, some want them to succeed. That doesn't mean they don't do their job well and criticize ones they like when they deserve it etc.

Curly haired boyfriend carrot top is like a pathological liar in that he has a new story for every circumstance. Wasn't it "I'm not a football expert" a while back? Now he is an impartial judge of all things football.

He's just a yellow journalist stirring the mud for whatever sells papers.

First he is no football 'writer' . he hardly knwos the game. Last week he was like patriots will be in SB. this week he says it is laughable to think they were going to get #1 seed. He wants local teams to lose .As peter gammons once said about the boston media - they take special pride in bringing down the local teams and make it an agenda that they abide .
Anyone hasnt listend to thornton give it shaughnessy ought to listen. His whole media pyramid analogy is spot on.

Barstool Sports? Jerry Thornton Takes On Dan Shaughnessy, Rolling Stone Article On Felger & Mazz « CBS Boston

I remember hearing a story about him. After the Red Sox won in 04, all of the people in the media section/press box/wherever were celebrating, except him. He just sat in his chair looking miserable. What a swell guy.

Thornton plays Shank like a bull fiddle. CHB is afraid of him.

Of course. His lame "Curse of the Bambino" gravy train crashed that night.

Goes back to around 1998 when Shank showed up for a free media breakfast in Foxboro and found out at the door that he'd been scratched from the guest list.

A sports columnist's job is not to be accurate, level headed or wise. It is his job to get people to read his column. In this day and age, more people read and talk about columns that have idiotic statements in them than columns that are right-on.

This thread is the perfect example of what I am talking about. I hadn't heard anything about Shank's column until I saw this thread. When people start threads like this, they are rewarding the activity they claim to hate.

At least there's no link to the column directly in the thread.

I agree with your overall point, but this column was on the front page, not the sports page, was discussed on talk radio first thing this morning and was a national story by mid-morning. With all due respect to Patsfans.com, I doubt this thread had much impact on the notoriety of the column. The toothpaste was long out of the tube on this one.

I used to think that.

However, I've come around to the conclusion that it is simply wrong in this day and age.

Understand, the newspaper game is over. There is a reason why the Globe, which sold a decade ago to the NY Times for $1.1 billion was bought by John Henry this year for less than 50% what the Yankees are paying Jacoby Ellsbury.

I once saw an in depth bio piece a few years back on Shaughnessy. He said it all came down to for him to represent the "historical record" for future researchers to source, if and when they were to investigate what Boston sports were like in this era. So, there it is. And here WE are. Shank's newspaper is decreasing more and more into irrelevancy while other internet and TV platforms are gaining. No one ceded that lazy egomaniac to be "history's record" for Boston sports. There are many other sources who won't let that misinformation live on uncontested.
