Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Remember when everyone said talib was finished and was desperate move by the patriots?

Sign reed and answer questions later :rocker:

I thought the patriot way was signing old veteran players who were giving up on and squeezing whats left out of them

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Not sure if he'd help much, but worth a try. I get the feeling he won't be picked up off waivers.

huh? Look at the age difference...don't think any one said a 27 yr old was "finished".

But Ed Reed sure as hell is finished

Fans and analyst said talib was finished after his poor performance against the giants.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

How much did Houston save in cutting him?

That's the only question as to "why" they did it. They've tanked the season, that much is obvious. Foster's down, QB mess, other key injuries and too deep a hole to climb out of.

They're going into rebuild right now.

That's not a reflection on Reed's ability to still play, necessarily.

Bring him in, see what he's got. If he can help, sign him, if not, don't. It's actually pretty simple.

The fans who said that had no idea what they were talking about. Same as the analysts.

The talib situation and ed reed being 35 is 100% different and you can't compare them. One had something left in the tank given his age...the other has his AARP card out

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Presuming Reed's not going to cost much to sign and he can be cut at any time should he not work out, what's the downside to adding him?

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Don't be sure BB will want Reed for certain. Don't forget that Reed started a mini-mutiny last year on the Ravens by publicly calling out Harbaugh for making the team practice in pads. BB would take that kind of talk for about as long as it takes to pick up a telephone and say, good luck with your future elsewhere, Ed.

Add in that Reed just called out his coach/coaching again in Texas and those two incidents might be more than BB wants to deal with, and this all comes with the serious question of whether Reed can even play anymore.

With all the young players on this team the last thing I'd think BB would want to introduce is a guy who has decided he's earned the right to publicly speak his mind. Now, BB did get Moss to zip it for two years but once Randy started running at the mouth he was gone.

Just another thing to consider...

Nothing. People are essentially trying any way they can to argue against adding one of the best of all time at his position as depth/insurance at a cheap price.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

It's also worth taking a shot at the lottery chance the Texans misused him and the 2012 Ed Reed is still there. McCourty-2012 Reed would be so beast.

Reed wasn't very good in 2012, either.

Yep, I don't get it. There's a decent chance he can still play and help them at a position of need and there is literally no downside to it at all. Now there is also the possibility that Belichick has already seen enough on tape between last year's Raven's and this year's Texans to decide he is done but the fans acting as if they have scouted his Texan's games and know he is washed up are simply making sh.t up. I seriously doubt anyone here has seen enough of Reed's play with Houston to form any kind of opinion on what he does or doesn't have left. I know I certainly haven't.

And let's not forget, he ran a 4.57 40, had a 33 inch vertical and maxed out at 350 on his bench. His 3 cone isn't available, nor his short shuttle but I would bet they are better than Tavon Austin Wilson's ..................

OK, so maybe that was 20 years ago, i'm just sayin.....................

There are a whole bunch of mediocre teams sitting on $15M+ in cap space. Almost nothing would surprise me.

If Reed were claimed off waivers, it would cost the Pats up to $1.7M for the remainder of the season. Really, the only reason to try and claim him off waivers is if you think the Donkeys might try to put in a claim as well (if anybody before the Pats puts in a claim, it's an academic point).

If they can get him for under $1M for the rest of the season, I'm all for it. If they feel the $$ are worth the risk to try and claim him off waivers, well, IBBIT.

Indeed. Presuming Reed would sign for vet minimum this really all boils down to the value of Reed compared to any of the bottom 53 players.

Is Reed more valuable than say, L Williams or M Forston or M Mulligan for example?

Irsay is going to do the best he can to drive that franchise into the ground. He's like Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder's love child........

I don't think you need to. The Texans cut him. That should say enough.

Look, just because a player used to be great doesn't mean there's 'no downside' to signing him. If he takes the field and is a complete liability in the secondary like he was last year for the Ravens and presumably was this year for the Texans, that's a big issue. Names don't defend passes.
