Richard Seymour: No Return to NE

Who freaking cares about a former all pro and now washed up bum no one thinks is worth much more than Vet minimum?

I know Vince is a big loss, but Patriots nation has sunk to the bottom depths of desperation on the defensive line....the wanting of Seymour clearly shows that desperation.

Levan Reid said on Twitter that Seymour hasn't trained since January and has lost 60lbs. Seymour at 250lbs isn't really going to do much as a DT. Chandler Jones can do well at DT in certain situations, but he is probably stronger and definitely faster than Seymour is right now.

I don't blame Seymour from being a bit bitter about how he left. It is business, but I can see how he could take it personal.

I wish Richard a happy retirement and it is time to move on.

well said, Rob0729 - i was a huge # 93 fan

i wish Richard all the best and thanks for great memories

BigDick says no way. I say good. He wasn't earning his money the last time he was here. Don't think he'd have anything to offer this team. Quite sure Belichick has zero interest.

I read somewhere that Tommy Kelly consulted with Seymour before he signed with the Pats.

Maybe ****ie knows that his relationship with BB is sour and that it would never work, but that at the same time, the Pats are a good destination for other players.

Meaning it's not all that sexy or intereresting....

Oh, and Ron Borges, please go [mod edited]. What a piece of unrelenting garbage. How he has a job in sports is stunning!

This seems to be one of the rare instances in which Borges actually picked up a telephone and did a minute or two of reporting.

We should be buying lottery tickets or something in amazement, not bashing him for it.

LOL.

Not happening.

His position is crystal clear. And so is 31 of the "other teams" he would play for - - plenty of whom have big needs on their DL's.

All you have to look at is the DL our OL manhandled last night that plays in the man's own city. They need him FAR more than the Pats do, they are 1-3 and struggling to save their season and they ain't giving him his price him are they?

You don't need a diagram.

I'm not saying it's happening. I was questioning your post because of your naked assertion, just as you'd have done had our positions been reversed.

I was a strong proponent of bringing him back ........ until watching Talib last night. We should spend Seymour's imaginary cash outlay on Talib.

Add DT to this years list of UDFA rookie rebuilding projects. Finish it in 2014's off season. Sign our Beasts!

Touche - - as they have, DI!

Big fan of Seymour and I was bummed when they traded him but this, if accurate, demonstrates why it was the right move for the Patriots because he was not going to sign with NE when he hit free agency and they were able to get Nate Solder out of it. I also considered Seymour a month or so ago when I realized he wasn't signed but it is really looking like he's done with football and I don't believe he would return here anyways. I honestly think he hates Belichick.

The numerous spygate references in the comments make you wonder if haters are just hating because they are too stupid to realize multiple teams are still taping or out of pure jealousy caused by years of Patriot dominance.

Seymour was a great Patriot in his time here. I wish he had better opinions around him as to his financial worth as the Patriots could have used him to hoist another couple of Lombardi Trophies. That said, he laid his bed a long time ago and wasn't able to move past some petty issues. Sure, the Patriots could have handled it better but hey, ask Tommy Kelly if he's happy to be here.

How long before a false report comes out that says Patriots contacted Seymour?

Re: Re: Richard Seymour: No Return to NE

I thought the Wilfork injury was devastating but us having no chance of signing an in season unsiged free agent defensive tackle who will turn 34 years old in 6 days and is coming off a 15 total tackle season, now that's devastation.

Someone needs to tell Seymour it is not 2005 and he is not that good anymore, for that matter someone should tell him we didn't want him when he was good so what makes him think we'd want him now, guys a prick diva who runs his mouth way to much.

I don't blame Josh for starting the thread, but anyone who honestly thinks that Seymour and Belichick had a chance of both agreeing to financial value AND reconciling their differences is obviously not following the team too closely.

That said, again--Zeus simply addressed an issue that has been a popular fan misconception (it's "possible" that he could come back is the phrase that's been widely used since the spring), but most of us felt that there was about a zero percent chance of ever seeing this happen.

Seymour still feels that his compensation should be in the 6-7-8 million dollar a year range, so apparently he feels that someone is suddenly going to come knocking at his door. We all know that isn't going to happen, just like it didn't with Abraham either, and he actually didn't want anything close to the money that Seymour does.

I'm sure that Belichick could have had any number of young, upcoming DL in free agency this year seeing as how it was a buyer's market, and yet he didn't feel that it was worth pursuing. I highly doubt he'd have wanted to give even more money to a guy like Seymour, who had some issues as being a bit of a diva when he was here and in his prime.

I see the BB run Patriots as a team that is put together with players, usually, who have max intent on winning and give max effort to their craft. It starts at the top with BB and it starts with the top spot on the field, TB. It's this kind of plan/environment that can make players like an unheralded/unknown Thompkins come in, try about as hard as humanly possible and have that hard work pay off with playing time. It also allows players from other teams that are "a problem" to be signed and voile! Suddenly, usually, they are no longer a problem. BB isn't 100% on following this mantra but he is overall exceptionally good at following it.
Now Contrast that with fans who see a name and some stats and think "great! sign him now!".

Hey, maybe I see it wrong but to me Seymour has made it crystal clear he doesn't fit the plan and doesn't give a flying F to fit the plan. And while I don't begrudge a player who wants to make $$$! and who is only going to show up to perform a job then go home, I don't want him on the Patriots with very rare exception. Look, making money is important to us all, and how a guy opts to view his craft is his business provided he is there when expected to be there. But with that said, if Seymour is the only veteran type option available for shoring up the DL (even if he or someone like him were open to playing for the Patriots), I'd rather BB go with a young DT(s) equivalent to a Thompkins type player who is going to come in and eat-drink-sleep his craft. One who sees winning/succeeding as the first second and third most important thing. One is buying into the Patriots environment. And if we sink with that player(s) then we will have a super easy time starting the offseason action item list: Item 1, DT.

I completely agree it was worthy of opening a thread to discuss, my annoyance is with Seymour and his constant need to speak negatively when asked about the Patriots. His being traded was not anymore Belichick's fault than it was his own, Seymour wanted a payday that would have prevented the team from retaining and adding to the team in an effective way so knowing that Belichick thought it was best for him to recoup what value he could before Seymour walked and honestly to land a first round pick for at the time a 29 year old defensive tackle who had only played in 24 of a possible 32 games in his last 2 seasons with the team was a great return. From Seymour's perspective Belichick put him in a situation where his new team paid him $42.14 mil over a 3 year period which you would think a player looking to cash in on a huge payday would be freaking ecstatic about especially if said player was outside of his prime seasons.

Honestly I was not in the US for a lot of Seymour's tenure so I didn't see a lot of him but looking at his stats he wasn't putting up JJ Watt or even Geno Atkins type numbers so I don't understand why anyone would pay him $15 mil a year, I mean really SF how many times has Brady even made $15 mil in a season.

Seymour had an incredible year in 2008. Something like 8 sacks, and teams averaged a full yard less running to his side. The issue was the money that he wanted in his next contract, which was ridiculous, and frankly, only the Raiders would have paid for him. We chose to pay the younger Wilfork.
