Richard Seymour: No Return to NE

Seymour was among the top 3 DL in the league during his time with the Pats. He never had gaudy stats, but he was a true force on the LOS requiring special game planing. He also was had the flexibility to play anywhere on the LOS. Regardless of his issues with the team, no fan should minimize his tenure with the Pats. From 2001-2008 he was as an important part of the teams success as anyone on the roster not named Tom Brady.

However that being said, Seymour is a perfect example of the adage "better a year too early that a year too late. In Oakland he had a few good years, but NEVER played to the level that he was being paid, in fact far from it. He was making so much money with the Raiders, he would have had to have been the DPOY in order to be considered a value. Just being a solid to good DLman didn't come near being worth the money.

With the Pats at 4-0 and the best part of the offense is still to come, Borges had to resort to the last former Pats player who will talk to him and say something negative. Now he is on the talk show circuit playing this up like its the biggest story since 9/11. The fact is that since Seymour left, Borges hasn't had a "source" in the Pats organization. No one talks to him He knows less about what goes on with the team than most of us. I simply hate the fact that the media pukes in this town give him the opportunity to pursue his obvious agenda in the great name of "entertainment"

He is a lying plagiarist, who doesn't deserve to be heard. He is everything wrong about the "its all about me" brand of journalism that permeates today's media. That smarmy little bully deserves to be ***** slapped every time he opens vile mouth. He is a plague on what good reporters should be and it kills me that he's being constantly rewarded for his bad behavior, ethics, and practices

OK rant over back to Seymour. The dude is retired. There is no way he's ready to play at an NFL level at this time. And while he may have had personal problems with the Pats, he very close to Tommy Kelly and Kelley never would have signed here if Richard hat totally bad mouthed the organization.

He was a great player but he wasn't a $15 mil a year player, and at the end of the day we got are franchise LT out of that deal, which is a more significant position in my opinion.

Seymour had an incredible year in 2008. Something like 8 sacks, and teams averaged a full yard less running to his side. The issue was the money that he wanted in his next contract, which was ridiculous, and frankly, only the Raiders would have paid for him. We chose to pay the younger Wilfork.

Agreed he was a great player, but he was heading into his 30's and at the end of the day if we kept Seymour we would not have been able to pay Wilfork who is 3 years younger and was the better choice on the field and in the locker room.

The fail of the team was since the trade the only defensive tackle taken in the first 5 rounds of a draft was Ron Brace, the reality is we have been playing with fire for far to long with Wilfork not having proper depth behind him and now we are in a predicament.

I don't blame Josh for starting the thread, but anyone who honestly thinks that Seymour and Belichick had a chance of both agreeing to financial value AND reconciling their differences is obviously not following the team too closely.

My apologies--John, not Josh.

I completely agree it was worthy of opening a thread to discuss, my annoyance is with Seymour and his constant need to speak negatively when asked about the Patriots. His being traded was not anymore Belichick's fault than it was his own, Seymour wanted a payday that would have prevented the team from retaining and adding to the team in an effective way so knowing that Belichick thought it was best for him to recoup what value he could before Seymour walked and honestly to land a first round pick for at the time a 29 year old defensive tackle who had only played in 24 of a possible 32 games in his last 2 seasons with the team was a great return. From Seymour's perspective Belichick put him in a situation where his new team paid him $42.14 mil over a 3 year period which you would think a player looking to cash in on a huge payday would be freaking ecstatic about especially if said player was outside of his prime seasons.

Honestly I was not in the US for a lot of Seymour's tenure so I didn't see a lot of him but looking at his stats he wasn't putting up JJ Watt or even Geno Atkins type numbers so I don't understand why anyone would pay him $15 mil a year, I mean really SF how many times has Brady even made $15 mil in a season.

I agree with you entirely. Seymour took advantage of his opportunity in OAK and was paid very handsomely, but there's no way he was worth 15 million a year. 10 million, at the time? Maybe...but 15 million? No way.

Seymour was a very good player here, and was even a force in OAK for a period of time, but it seems as though he is still holding out for top dollar--and he isn't going to get it. It's just not happening anymore.

I highly doubt that Belichick would pay him 50% of his asking price right now, but that's just my opinion. I think Seymour tries to come off as though he's so disgusted with the Patriots organization, but the truth is that it was Belichick and the front office who didn't want him anymore. I think that they put up with more than they normally do with Seymour to begin with, in terms of his holdout(s), taking plays off/arguable laziness, and general attitude. Again, that's just how I see it, so I could be off.

He served a purpose here, and he did his job well the majority of the time. He was also paid very, very well for that job. I think there was a point where Belichick decided that he just wasn't performing well enough to justify his high asking price and/or there may have been some early negotiations behind the scenes for an extension that did not go too well. The choice to keep Wilfork over Seymour ended up to be a correct one, even if it set us back defensively for awhile.

Did anyone really think he would come back here?

I don't know how many actually thought it would happen, but I'm amazed by the number of people that want it to happen.

Borges is a DOUCHE. Need I say more?
