Patriots CUTS

Ben Volin made a good point regarding Cunningham.

So I'm guessing this means adiós to JC, not that it matters much anyway,

As mentioned before, they can't IR non-UFAs before the cutdown to 53.

Why though? That Patriots have something like 10 mil in cap space....what do they plan to do with all that hoarded dough?

For what it's worth, the Patriots HAD about 10.5 million in cap space prior to their moves in the past couple of days; so they should actually have at least 12-13 million at the present moment. The cutting of Fells, renegotiating/saving of 650,000 more with Hooman, and cutting of Mesko (another million) is at least the 2.5 million dollar difference right there.

The sole reason why they are always able to stay competitive both now and into the future ties in directly with their ability to save money and carry it over regarding the cap. For many teams, the Aaron Hernandez situation alone would seriously give them problems, but this team has once again put itself in excellent shape to make some necessary moves again in free agency next spring. That along with having a full draft again will be highly appreciated when we're all hitting our "refresh" buttons when the time comes.

Push it forward to next year. Some guys to consider re-signing (Talib, Wendell, Ninko, Spikes), plus one free agent we know they're interested in (Emmanuel Sanders) and one FA they were reportedly interested in (Michael Johnson). Oh yeah, and an extension for McCourty.

These examples would go much further into specifics, but we should all appreciate the fine work that they've once again done in regards to the cap--especially in a relatively "flat" era lately. If any of the Fanane or Hernandez money is saved/recouped it will be just another bonus in the big picture of things.

The etched in stone BB mindset: why pay a guy X when you can pay X-Z, get similar production, use the X-Z savings for additional production/advantage elsewhere. I doubt the phrase "why not just spend the cap money, we have plenty of it" exists in the BB lexicon.
Is he right to save cap and cut Mesko? I tell you what, this is the cut that concerns me most. Mesko was a solid performer and a +1 in that extremely important field position battle (not to mention FG kicking success). Whatever the savings, given the contract $$$ it likely won't be enough IF the opposition's starting field position is a problem (and Gost misses extra FGs). With that said, BB and staff obviously watched the practices. They must believe Allen has the skills to give them what they need on punts and FG holding. I find it hard to believe BB would gamble with these critical needs if the gamble was a longshot.

Pulled these numbers off the best cap page in the business Miguel’s (Miguel's UNOFFICIAL 2013 Patriots Salary Cap Information Page) looking at it we took it on the chin with Hernandez and Fanene, however over $13 mil in cap hits for players not on the 53 man roster seems like a lot of money, that said I have never really looked at previous years so I actually do not know if this is the norm.

During the preseason, to prevent "stashing" of young players.

Yeah, I knew that didn't sound right. Brady went to IR in 2008. Do you think another team wouldn't have claimed him? Or any number of star players that go to IR. The Giants could have got Ballard back last year if he had to be re-waived (not that it matters now).

Leon Washington & Marquise Cole cut today in order to make room for OLmen Cave & Barker, OLB Chris White & DT AJ Francis. Cole is no loss at all, but please tell me that
McCourty isn't returning KOs.

Still waiting for the hammer to drop on the suckness of Kline & Develin...

Develin isn't that bad.

Thanks, BTW, did the Pats recover any of the money from the Fanene contract?

As for the suckiness of Kline, don't worry, he'll be cut within days. I expect rotating OL's brought in to look at in 1 day trials for OL slots #7 and #8 (if we have 8) and the PS.

Develin might actually make it - at least for a time.

McCourty isn't returning KOs.

Still waiting for the hammer to drop on the suckness of Kline & Develin...
I think the KR will be Boyce. He had the highest KR average of any Patriot in the PS.

Kline will be cut once either of these newly claimed O-Linemen prove that they are better than him (shouldn't be too hard).

Develin is not going anywhere.

Did we get A J Francis or not?

Now BB will certainly have to find another CB or 2. The loss of Dowling and Cole makes that certain.

Your irrational hatred for Develin is bizarre.

Your irrational hatred for Develin is bizarre.

As with Aaron Hernandez we at Patsfans have no idea what awful things Devlin may have done like running over Captain's dog, running off with his wife, posting pics of a supposedly secret tryst between he & Capn' on the Internet, whatever.

I don’t think they’ve recovered any of it yet, they have received permission to attempt to recoup it from what I understand, I am not a cap expert, but I can copy and paste from Miguel’s page pretty damn good

Yes, Francis is officially here.

And depending on the outcome of Dennard's hearing, Bill might need to have at least 2 CBs
ready at a moment's notice.

It's neither hatred nor bizzare; it's simply that there are plenty of FBs better than him available
who have actual experience in the NFL playing, you know, Fullback.

I suspect that we'll see a corner signed tomorrow, perhaps being back Moore.

This strikes me as one of the deepest shadow rosters we've had in years.

Seems to me Belichick plans it out that way, inviting certain players into camp who he thinks can play a role for him, but as role players, won't attract the interest of other teams, thus remaining available to provide what is always needed off roster depth during the season

In some cases the players can truly contribute, but the younger generation is always going to be given the protected roster spots, all things being equal.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see some of these guys come and go, signed and cut depending on who we are playing. So for some it may be "see you later" rather than "farewell"
