I think taking the connection between Dowling and Belichick's drafting a step further to comparing opinions of Belichick's drafting to opinions of Thompson's drafting despite similar recent failures is completely acceptable, and I especially won't accept any criticism in this regard from the king of thread-derailing.
I think it's appropriate because draft evaluations are relative. What purpose does it serve to inveigh against BB for his egregious draft misfires if we do not also account for those consistently held up as exemplars - e.g. Sherrod, AJ Jenkins, Sergio Kindle. People here tend to dwell on these misses but you look across the league and there isn't a single elite team that hasn't had a number of similar head scratchers.
