Ras-I Dowling released

He sucked. Well prob pick up another cb as teams cut to 53 if need be.

The guy never looked right after that hip injury his rookie year.

He has never looked right. I remember seeing his pre-draft workout and his knees were shaking when he was setting to sprint.

let go of Tavon Wilson & Tim Tebow, then...

This House is CLEAN!

He was never right after college. By talent, he was probably a top 20 pick. He was available at 33 because of his injury history. Sometimes guys who slide like Gronk or Cannon due to health concerns work out, other times guys who slide due to injury like Dowling and Wheatley don't.

I can't express how disappointed I am. I can only conclude that he never made it back all the way from the major hip surgery and would never be what they thought he could be.

Holy cow. Can't make the club from the tub.

Seems strange they'd release him before the fourth preseason game, no?

As BF said, they must have simply decided he was never going to pan out.

I'm disappointed too. All indications in training camp were that he looked really good though so maybe he re-injured the hip.

I'm not surprised.
The kid couldn't stay healthy.
I agree with those who say that he was drafted way to high, it was a wasted pick, IMHO. He had injury problems in College. I never understood why they picked him when they did.

Very disappointed. They are going to need some depth in the secondary.

That leaves five cornerbacks on the 53 man roster:

Talib
Dennard
Arrington
Ryan
Cole (special teams contributor)

As near as I can tell, they felt:
(A) If he stayed healthy, he would be an excellent player;
(B) The risk of the injuries continuing were low enough to justify taking him there.

Unfortunately, the gamble didn't pay off.

It's ok to take a risk. But shouldn't they have taken that risk a little bit lower in the draft?

Room for Seymour? (yes I've said this after nearly every release!)

Hopefully they trade for a CB now though.

For all the whining about this team's misses at WR early on in the draft, it seems that CB has leapfrogged the WR position for early round busts.

Very good starting three. Devoid of quality depth after that.

The unsurprising end of an error...

Not if they wanted to take that risk. And they did take a risk lower that appears to be panning out, with draft overall being excellent.

I'd gladly take a Dowling every draft if Solder, Vereen, Ridley and Cannon come with him.

Do we know for sure that he was not waived/injured?

For what it's worth:

Patriots cut Ras-I Dowling | ProFootballTalk

In a surprise move, the Patriots have cut cornerback Ras-I Dowling.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report that the Patriots made the move, and it was confirmed on the league’s transaction wire on Wednesday afternoon.

Heading into the 2011 NFL draft, the Patriots liked Dowling so much that they took him with the first pick in the second round (a pick they had previously acquired in a trade with the Panthers). And Dowling showed early promise, starting the first two games of the season.

But Dowling suffered a hip injury in Week Two of his rookie year and missed the rest of the season, and Dowling’s 2012 season was also cut short because of an injury, this time a torn muscle in his thigh. Through two seasons Dowling has played in only nine games.

Now Dowling is done in New England.

Atleast we are 3 deep at nickel CB.
