NFLN morons: Patriots will "take a step back" this season

A year ago at this time some people were looking at the roster and after adding together the 2011 numbers for Welker, Lloyd, Branch, Stallworth, Gaffney, Gronkowski, Hernandez and Fells they came to the conclusion that the Pats would pass for about 9,000 yards and 75 touchdowns.

Obviously that did not happen.


Fast forward one year and some people are adding together the 2012 NFL stats for Amendola, Jenkins, et al and concluding that the Patriots will score fewer points than the Chiefs did last year.

Obviously that is not going to happen either.


Without a doubt there are questions at the WR and TE positions. Without having seen the starters play for even the obligatory ten minutes in a pre-season game, I would just suggest that it is very premature to make a declaration about how this offense will perform. It makes for interesting discussion, but right now at best it is simply a rolling of the dice best-guess speculation, regardless of how confident the person is that makes their prediction; at worst it is just somebody throwing something out there for the sole sake of ratings and advertising revenue.

Now, it's very possible that everything you listed up in the bullet points MIGHT be true and the offense might just go on clicking. BUT, that's a whole bunch of presumptions.

It's a QB league, so of course most fan bases would take the Patriots' offense. That's not what Tunes' rant was about though, nor was that what my response was about. Tunes is generally a solid poster, but he went full Ray Ray19 on us here.

And while I do understand most of the attention will be focused on the offensive losses this offseason, you must admit most experts seem to be glossing over our possible defensive improvement for this season. Chandler Jones looks like a player ready to explode, our LB unit finally has nice depth and our secondary looks fine if they stay healthy.

No Pats fan should expect equal production from the offense at this point, but again, most experts seem to instantly look at our offense and feel like we're in trouble as a team. That certainly remains to be seen.

I have to agree with DI's basic proposition. While I believe this team will win 11+ games this season, I'm not upset with anyone who looks at the Pats and thinks they will take a "step back". Remember these guys have to speculate on 32 teams. They just look at the obvious. You cannot deny the loss of offensive production from Hernandez, Welker, and Woodhead, plus the uncertain return of Gronk. If any other team lost what amounts to 85% of their receiver production, we'd expect to see them "take a step back". So why should we begrudge these gusys just because its the Pats.

Here's what they don't see.

1. An OL that could be the best in the league

2. A running game that could be a top 5 unit.

3. A QB who has a history of making EVERY WR he plays with productive

4. An OC who is one of the top offensive minds in the league

5. An ever improving defense who will be in position to carry a very young offense early in the season.

While the Division is still weak, its not as weak as many think. Both the Dolphins and Bills front line talent that is easily as good as the Pats. But both still suffer when you compare the QB's play and overall depth. The Jets will just simply suck this year and have no redeeming qualities other than an entertaining HC

The Pats schedule outside the division is more difficult than last season, IMHO But 11 wins looks doable.

Bottom Line: If you are looking at the Pats superficially, you would HAVE to conclude they are going to take a "step back". If you know the team as well as we do, you are probably confident that this "superficial view" is merely false hope for those teams and their supporters who have been "oppressed" by the Pats for the last decade.

Statistically - the 2005 Patriots with a strong running game would be a fair comparison to what we should expect from this team. They will be more than fine.

When you stop the insults and address specifics, your opinion will be worth considering. I offered particulars on why the WR/TE situations might not be as dire as many (including yourself) assume. You come back with "history" and "the odds."

I'm not predicting that this offense will be as good as last season in the early going especially. But when you look closely at who is replacing who, while considering that (A.) the offensive line returns intact, (B.) the running game will be just as good if not better, and (C.) an improved defense should give the offense a boost, I don't buy this alleged "step back" argument as a given.

Hi JMC - I would find it strange if a number of the "personalities" that I have seen over the last five months weren't here. From my view, there are far too many posters with personal agendas who simply ignore that this teams' quarterback has not had a season where he has had one season of less than 4,000 passing yards, barring the 2008 season, in the last five seasons.

I think that his 2005 season is the appropriate measure for Brady statistically this year with fewer picks.

Compare your posts with Tunes', though, and you'll find a world of difference. As I've said, it may be that the Patriots don't take a step back. I certainly think the defense should be better than last year if McCourty and the top 3 CBs can stay healthy. That doesn't mean that those who think there will be a fall back are morons or being unreasonable. Last year's team put up the 3rd highest scoring total in NFL history. Even if the same offense had returned, it wouldn't have been unreasonable to look for a drop off. There are plenty of legitimate reasons for thinking the Patriots could/will fall back some.
