Rappaport: Welker still waiting for the Pats' first offer

Man, they better no let Welker walk. There are 2-3 games they would have lost last year if not for Welker. He plays hard every game, gets killed going across the middle and still plays hard. In his time with the Pats, how many games has he missed? 2? 3? Pay the man.

The following is a comprehensive list of scoops Ian Rappaport has made either at the Herald or NFLN:

Re: Ian Rappaport Tweet: Welker waiting for Pats 1st offer???

Yeah, I am thinking that too. Kraft isn't talking publicly about keeping him and word isn't leaked that they are close to a deal if they haven't even traded numbers.

Seriously. For what little good it's worth, at least we know the rumors that they were "close" last week and today's rumor that "Welker is still waiting for any offer" can't both simultaneously be true.

if i am giving up a first and a big contract..it better be for a #1

If Rappoport is getting bad info, he's getting it from Welker's people, so they're probably just upset at the offer they currently have.

Pats are one of the worst deep ball teams in the league, any number 1 receiver that can catch a deep ball is an upgrade over welker

Top Pats need in a nutshell: The deep ball - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

We need a "deep ball receiver" to play alongside Welker, not to replace him. Wes is the most productive slot receiver of all time, it doesn't make a lick of sense to replace him with a deep ball receiver, when we have lead-footed, deathly afraid of contact Brandon Lloyd as out number 2 receiver. He is the one who needs to be upgraded. Exchange Welker for a "deep ball receiver" and that leaves you with a hole in the slot.

Just a thought, and I'm not a business contract guy, but if Welker's side says "hey Pats, we're testing free agency before we talk to you" ... why would the Pats have made an offer before that happened?

Hah! Seems like all Rap does is retweet what Breer tweets. I was thinking of creating a Twitter account, using Rap's mug and just doing the same, retweeting Breer all the time. The Twitter user name would be BertBreer'sEcho.

Perhaps Welker is waiting for the first serious offer from the patriots. Perhaps all that is on the table is an old offer that has been rejected.

You guys think welker drops passes?? Did you see Cruz last year???? Ugh...

Huh, what? Who wants Cruz?

I don't know what line you're reading between.

Just heard on WEEI a few minutes ago that Jennings to the Patriots was a done deal.

So we can add that to the rumors that will be proven untrue in a day or 2.

that's one i don't believe at all. Jennings to Minn. They have nothing at WR

Bob Kraft is giving the fans a real snow job. The last offer for Welker was
2 years at 6 mil. per year. It had been reduced from 2 years at 8 mil. per year. Welker is supposed to grovel and accept the first offer. When
Welker signs with another team at 5 P. M. today, Kraft will shed a few crocodile tears and claim the Patriots did their best to keep him.

Cruz plays out of the slot 90% of the time.

I'm definitely not advocating signing Cruz over Welker, but Cruz is more of a deep threat than anybody on this team over the last 2 1/2 seasons has been.

A partially logical explanation is that Welker's side said talk to the hand this year. They are going to test the market and then sit down with the Patriots since last year they took the tender and then sat on their hands waiting for a long-term offer before the July deadline.

I think he ought to do that. It won't take long to find out what kind of years and guaranteed money is out there. Teams interested in Welker had the three-day period to speak with his agent. Welker can quickly rule teams in or out based on his preferences. Any major offer will be leaked in the next 72 hours and Welker can play that off the Patriots.

It's going to come down to the guaranteed money. The only two teams with enough money to blow him away that have a good QB and are also competitive are the Colts and the Bengals. Denver doesn't have enough cap space and Lurch has two similar receivers in the stable.

I think he finds out that he's wanted, but teams have more pressing issues than slot receiver. I believe he'll be back but not until he's sucked the very life out of the posters on this message board.

Where are you getting this information from?

Were they repeating rumors, or were they actually reporting it?

The Patriots have arguably the slowest collection of offensive skill players in the entire league, so that's not surprising. The fastest straight line speed guy we have is probably Aaron Hernandez, and he ran a 4.64 40 in 2010.
