Could the Pats trade for Michael Thomas?

This team ranked 7th in defense despite missing Hightower, Chung, and Van Noy and couldn't stop the run. Had a ton of dead cap money in a reset year. Offense had a covid fog QB , no tight ends, and the only WR was Meyers yet they still went 7-9. Just went on a $230M shopping spree.

You don't think this team could win 10 games now ?

Unless 2021 Mac Jones becomes 2001 Tom Brady, then I'm not certain if they'll even win 9 games...The 2nd-half schedule is a killer.

Kinda wish that Bill would've added at least one more CB during the past two drafts...But that's just me I guess...Might've helped in the leverage game...

****ty, isn’t it? Possibly going to have a good to great front 7 after the **** show that was last year, and we just pushed the problems to the back! Ugh.
Only if Gilmore isn't playing.

Doubtful we’d trade for him. Lombardi was ripping into him for waiting to get surgery. Not that Lombardi speaks for us, but he definitely has similar thinking to Belichick.

I usually don't put TOO much stock into personality issues since Bill seems to have a penchant for resolving those types of problems once a guy shows up in NE... but it's not like Sean Payton is some blowhard, so I dunno about this one. He seems like the type to constantly want to re-adjust his finances, and they've already invested heavily at WR - if you trade for Thomas then either Meyers or Bourne are your 4th WR and won't see the field a ton.

It reminds me of Revis in that way. He kept renegotiating his contract every year to make sure he was maximizing his earnings, which worked because he was still one of the top (if not THE top) CB's in the game. The Patriots were willing to take on a year of that with him because they were a contender already, so this situation doesn't really favor that, but it's still familiar in that way.

Whatever happened to Peter Clemenza anyway?
The short story is Michael told the rest of the Corleone family and the heads of the other 4 families Clemenza died of a heart-attack. The real story is the Rosato Brothers killed him (with backing from Hyman Roth) as they were not happy how he was running the NY territory after Michael moved the family HQ to Lake Tahoe. Roth's long game was to destroy Michael the Corleone Family from within and eventually take over their casinos in LV.

Once Michael determined it was the Rosato Bros who killed Clemenza, he didn't want the family to be perceived at fractured so he installed Frankie Pantangelli as capo so he could make the effort to get them in line while in parallel, he developed a strategy to take out Hyman Roth.

God paid and then immediately became a malcontent. Hard pass.

I think they can win 10 games, and I think they can make the playoffs, but I don’t believe they are in a class with Tampa Bay or the Chef’s. I think they can continue to build to that level over the next couple of years so I would not give away the draft capital or cap space required to go get Thomas.

Agree the answer to this thread is no, stay pat with existing pass catchers.

The rumors are the relationship between Michael Thomas and the Saints is so fractured that a divorce is inevitable. There is speculation that there could be a trade before the start of the season. Would the Pats trade for him? The Saints are in the market for a CB. Would a combination of Gilmore, Harry, and a high draft pick(s) get it done?

Personally, I would rather have Thomas than Julio Jones. Jones is four years older than Thomas. Thomas could be an elite WR for Mac Jones for an extra four years or more than Julio Jones would have been if the Pats traded for him.

Thomas' base salary is nothing in 2021 ($1 million). But his base jumps up next year and the following two years after that ($15.4m, $15.5m, and $18.5m). Of course the Pats could get cap relief by giving him an extension or turning some of next year's base into a bonus.

Odds are the Saints will keep him and even if they do try to trade him that they won't offer enough considering the potential teams looking to trade for him. But I figured I would throw it out there.

We're talking about Michael Thomas here. Not Russel Wilson, Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes. Thomas isn't worth what you suggested. Gilmore, Harry AND draft picks is way over-paying.

GIlmore is in the last year of his deal. Harry is worth a third day draft pick. If Gilmore wasn't in his 30s and in the last year of his deal looking to be paid like a top 1-3 CBs in the league, I would agree with you. Gilmore really isn't worth more than a second or third round pick with his current situation. If Gilmore had several years left on his deal, things would be different.

But I just threw that out there as an example of a hypothetical trade.

If Joe Flacco and nick foles can win a superbowl, so can mac jones... no point mortgaging the future and present for Michael thomas.
