Talib ? Sea Bass ? Welker ? So we didn't use the tag at all ? Interesting, what's next ?

We weren't expected to use the tag on anyone, as has been reported for the past few weeks.

They seem to be making progress with Welker, so I'd imagine that is their top priority before he hits free agency (or probably even before the Mar.9th deadline which offers an early negotiations period with other teams).

I wouldn't have expected them to overpay for either one of Talib or Vollmer, both who had multiple injuries last year, and both who would've costed too much for a one year period.

Only eight teams used the franchide tag this year. The other 75% did not see it as being a good value.

According to some reports, this COULD be the year to be patient in FA. Several people with "inside sources" have already come out and said that a lot of players are going to be very disappointed with the kind of offers they are going to get in FA. It definitely looks like its going to be a buyers market for 98% of this class.

I'm sure that there will be about 10 guys who will sign big deals, but for the vast majority of FA's and that includes guys like Volmer and Talib, and even more so, guys like Thomas, Edelman, Woodhead and Arrington. they are gong to be disappointed. Sure guys are likely to get raises, but they aren't going to break the bank either.

I think this is a very good year to have picks low in each round and a lot of money in FA.

Should've locked down Talib. Dumb move for our pathetic lack of defense. :bricks:

With the Welker situation being what it is (11+ million for the tag and reports that the sides are progressing in talks), this comes as no real surprise.

I had hoped they would tag Talib because he is the best FA corner and I think he's gone if he hits the open market. Would've liked to see the D with him for an entire year before committing long term. I think we're going to see Welker back and probably Dunta Robinson and some other decent corner for mid-level money. Lack of playmakers will be as apparent as ever on defense

Agreed, unless we're also close to a deal with Vollmer or Talib they were never options anyways. Talib is not a top 5 CB and Vollmer should not make LT money playing RT. Especially considering both of their injury concerns and Talib's off-field issues.

Welker was the only real option from day 1 and it sounds like we're making enough progress to not need it, it might have only been a setback at this point, giving the Pats leverage to lessen a deal.

I have no issue with not using it.

oh talib is gone in my books..lets see what mid level guy they bring in and cheap out on like they usually do to fix the leaks

Great minds (with the same forum name) think alike

Voting for Dunta Robinson I saw on an NFL rumor site that he is willing to take a pay cut to play here. I take these sites with a huge grain of salt, but pay cut + CB = Bill's guy

Maybe you should wait to see what transpires before complaining about them not vastly overpaying for a good but not great CB.

I have the exact same feelings. Usually I'm a worrier, but I'm just not feeling it with the potential loss of Talib or Vollmer. I think that as Ken said, many teams are expecting a buyer's market which would coincide with only 25% of all teams even using the franchise tag option as opposed to 2/3rds last year.

I wouldn't want Welker to go into the open market because my opinion is that he may be a lot closer to irreplacable than the other two, but I think they make take a chance on seeing what the market dictates with Talib and Vollmer.

Just because we have sufficient cap room doesn't mean that we have to run out, panic, and change the successful approach that Belichick has built on individually asssessing every player for value. I'm not seeing the panic. Maybe I am underestimating things.

i wish the cap hit was lower for CBs so we could have kept talib. pats won't do a multi year deal on him..maybe another 1 year deal? but will he want that? i think not

Well crap, if that's the case why even bother watching them this season.

Thank God the Red Sox look like a juggernaut, or else there'd be lots of sad and bored Pats fans out there.

You know how the pats act with CBs. They can't draft them and they don't pay them..leaving a void for the past 5+ years that has hurt us. Why a lot of us are frustrated

That's what my pet peeve about the whole situation is, and that's what tends to piss me off.

Their plan may have been to realistically sign 1/3 of these players the entire team, with Welker being the leading candidate for obvious reasons; yet we'll hear about how the team messed up, how their heyday is over, and how suddenly Talib and Vollmer moving on will be the downfall of everything.

There are always challenges to overcome, weaknesses to hide, areas of concern, and players who move on--every single year.

Talib has 19 INTs in 5 seasons in the league, he's forced 2 fumbles in his entire career, and you're whining because he's not back and the team needs playmakers? :bricks:

The reason why some are frustrated (me included) is becasue we haven't had a good/great CB since Law. We have failed in the draft at the CB position and it gets people frustrated seeing teams pass all over u come playoffs/Sbs the pats 5 years.

Even if talib hasn't had eye popping stats over his whole career..he has been the best option we have had since..well for a while even if it was for 6 games. yes he was hurt but he made plays last year our other CB's couldn't make besides dennard. He gave us some stablility and people would like to see that

they may make a trade for a CB or maybe get a grimes ect to make up for talib gone who knows. I am just sick of them cheaping out at that position or their lack of being able to find the talent in the draft

DRC and Derek Cox would look great in pat unis and we can pry get both for what Talib will get on open market
