A sour taste? Nah, my Pats took what appears to have been the more challenging road to the AFCCG and fell one play short after a week of reported flu outbreaks. I'm nothing but proud of that team, I may not have wanted Polian to get another shot, especially against a team going in with for all intents and purposes a rookie QB (they can't all be Tom Brady, Rex has spent more time in rehab than on the practice field - I was more P'd-off at his defense ignoring the RBs out of the backfield when that has been Peyton's new favorites since he lost Stokely and had Clark gone so long, good grief you so-called defensive gurus Ron Rivera & Lovie Smith), but it is what it is and my Pats pushed the envelope of greatness again. No sour taste, just some sadness for the guys and another season of realistic hopes to look forward to!

Tony isn't in BB's league as an innovative X's and O's genius, but he a pretty savvy and thoughtful football man and in a more limited sense a student of the game much as Bill is. Much like Cowher, who saw what beat them senseless for two or three years and set about to modify their teams attitude and behavior to better mirror it just long enough (and at a time when we were transitioning from dominant to a team reinventing itself to be in position to extend it's dynastic run through the decade if not beyond) to pull off one championship.

It remains to be seen if he can stay the course with the Colts - Cowher couldn't and lost control of the team badly heading into their defense of the title. And that on a franchise that was adding a thumb ring. And of course the specter of Tony moving on to the ministry will remain. It apears likely he'll return for a defense of title season (first mistake) but I doubt his family or his psyche will withstand a defense of what transpires thereafter. Cowher's didn't, and he is a guy likely to return to the game in the not too distant future while Tony is a guy who has long spoken of his dual desires to win a championship and get out on his own terms with his dignity intact before some schmuck owner fires him again.

One of the things I think is hysterical in all this is Manning now being lauded not for posessing a lazer rocket arm but for developing the sense to manage his team through the big games. Welcome to Brady's QB level, Peyton. Careful you don't backslide.

The odds are staggering against any team repeating, and that makes the feat impressive.

I would, however, put Indy's chances at well above Tampa's and Pittsburgh's chances after their one-time victories.

They have laser-rocket-arm, sure, but they also have several years of excellence in the regular season the last few years. They've moved to close the gaping holes in their defense. I do not know their depth situation, but their starters proved playoff-ready this year. We all know they have cap questions, but we also know (from experience), some guys will restructure and cut a cap-friendly deal for a shot at a ring.

They're the best in the NFL until proven otherwise. Let's not be punks about it. That's what the team has to do, so why should we look at it any different? If the Pats want rings number 4, 5, 6, etc., they have to beat the odds and work their butts off every year... which, of course, is exactly what Indy has to do to stay at our level.

Yeah, I for one do see the Celtics/Lakers, Yankees/Red Sox comparisons as apt... but let's call it Yanks/Sox for now, with the 06 Colts in the role of the 04 Sox.

On the plus side, as of this morning... we're both undefeated.

Flattery is the sincerest form of imitation. Imitation is also the sincerest form of flattery. I guess now the Colts consider themselves in a position to make a run at a dynasty. First, their owner is insane.Secondly,just when Tony thinks he has it figured out,he probably doesn't. Sorry-I'd predict a brain war between mangini and Belichick before I'd bet on any brain war between Belichick and Dungy. Dungy is a follower. Belichick is a leader.

Wow, what a rivalry we have now. Almost like the Lakers/Celtics of the 80's. I think this is truly a golden-age for the NFL and we, as fans, should realize it and enjoy it.

I heard that on the radio. I think I can speak for most that most NFL fans in general think of Dungy as a class act with a good heart. I'm happy for him.

Now your GM on the other hand could burn in hell for eternity and I don't think anyone except Colt fans would lose a wink.
