Note: Subject to change in future weeks

1st Round - Jesse Williams, DT - Alabama

Trade New England Patriots 2nd round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins for Miami's third round and Miami's fourth round draft picks (Miami owns Chicago's third round draft selection)

3rd Round - Brian Winters, OT - Kent State
3rd Round - Bacarri Rambo, FS - Georgia
4th Round - Stedman Bailey, WR - West Virginia
7th Round - Darius Slay, CB - Mississippi State
7th Round - Corey Broomfield, CB - Mississippi State

Comments

Substitute Louis Nix, DT - Notre Dame for Jesse Williams, DT - Alabama if Louis Nix declares early for the 2013 NFL Draft.

Corey Broomfield, CB - Mississippi State would be the sleeper pick for the nickel cornerback position.

UDFA - Rontez Miles, SS - California (PA)

Love the Williams/Nix, Winters and Bailey picks. Nice draft.

Williams is never going to be a classic penetrator, but he has enough speed and quickness to generate internal pressure. He isn't asked to do that in Nick Saban's defense.

Seems as though Kyle Love has worn down as the season has progressed. In my opinion, Brandon Deaderick is better suited as a five technique defensive lineman. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Myron Pryor can't stay healthy. Ron Brace has solidified his status as a second round bust.

I was all defense until recently. DT, strong safety and olb. I have Hightower playing Ninko's role going forward.

With the injuries to the offensive line and Edelman. I'm thinking a little offense. We've made the mistake of writing off certain positions BB drafting early. Like interior ol, ILB. Any position is open. Except for QB I guess. It appears that we don't target those big wr's who are great at jumping up and high-pointing a ball and are fast. But, take time to get up to speed. Don't get in and out of their cuts like we like. The jump ball isn't exactly a high pct. pass. So, I think we place a lesser value on those players than many teams who just chuck it. We like the quicker guys with speed too. Bethel Johnson and Chad Jackson. Wanted Percy Harvin. Randy Moss could do both. But, he ain't walking thru that door. Re-considering Tavon Austin. If Mankins injuries appear more serious than just nagging. I'm sure that brings a prospect like Cooper into play. I figured we'd re-up SeaBass and T isn't a concern with Cannon coming on and Zusevics healthy.

Trade down for a three. Someone moves up for Tyler Wilson. Maybe Buffalo?

2a Tavon Austin - RB
2b Arthur Brown - OLB
3a Jordan Hill - DT - Acquired pick in trade down.
3b Tyrann Mathieu - DB - Honey Badger. We have a nickel back.
7a OT - Honestly, no idea.
7b G/C - See 7a

I want them to draft a DT.Someone with alot of potential and that can push the pocket. Then i would go with a wr.It wouldnt shock me thought if BB went with a DB.How many times is he gonna draft one.

I want an ILB/OLB (it depends of which defensive scheme we will running, if we stay at 43 or play 34) who can cover the middle of the field.

I like every player on your list. Particularly like Wheaton, Winters and Fragel, but they are all solid picks. Good job.

Yup, you'll get no flaming from me either. I like every pick you've got, some a great deal (although I haven't seen Fragel play). My only criticism, and it's a minor one, is the lack of a franchise 1st round type of player but that's about as good a mock as I've seen, you've hit on just about every need without compromising on quality, so well done.

Substitute Louis Nix, DT - Notre Dame for Jesse Williams, DT - Alabama if Louis Nix declares early for the 2013 NFL Draft.

Corey Broomfield, CB - Mississippi State would be the "diamond in the rough" selection for the nickel cornerback position.

They're not all my favorites, but any draft with Jesse Williams/Louis Nix + Brian Winters + Stedman Bailey is very nice. Fine work.

This would be sort of a buzzkill for the upcoming draft for you talent sleuths, but it occurred to me that the if the Pats have no more significant injuries and just re-sign their important FAs (Woodhead, Welker, Thomas, Vollmer, Talib) that they really don't need a 2013 draft at all.

From what I understand it is not that deep a draft, so I would like it if the Pats kept the two #7 picks to grab guys like Ebner and Dennard and just trade off their top three picks for future picks and get the Golden Goose working again.

Thoughts?

Not a very sound strategy. We got lucky with Dennard. Most 2-3 round prospects don't drill a cop a week before the draft. Expect your 7th rounder to be more like the other one. Jeremy Ebert. Couldn't make the squad. We all love Ebner. But, he hasn't proven he's anything other than a special teams player yet. He's been completely lost when given the opportunity to play safety. Not surprised given his lack of experience. Calling him anything other than a ST player at this point is putting the carriage in front of the horse.

Also, other teams have wised up to dealing future picks to us. I was shocked BB couldn't deal the Dowling pick at the top of Round 2 in 2011. I thought we'd surely trade down from our 2nd first this past year. We moved up. Also, did on the first one. That NO trade turned out terrible for them. Not sure that Ingram is even better than Vereen. Plus, we got their first. I'd like to get a couple of extra picks. Hopefully, someone wants to move up for a qb and we get their 2nd and early 3rd. Maybe, we can move our 3rd for a 4 and a 5. We'd have 5 picks in the first 5 rounds then. Plus the two 7's.

We also have a taxi squad of a couple of kids who are practically mid-rounders. Jeff Demps spent the year on IR. We get him back. Can offset the possible loss of Woodhead. Zusevics has already been activated. Might be able to play g/t and be a 9th ol type. Jake Ballard spent the year on IR. Gives us depth at TE. We have 3 rookie DL other than Chandler Jones. Bequette, Francis and Fortson. We don't really have a lot of holes. If there's a good player, take him. Mayo has mentioned guys like Dion Jordan and E. Ansah. Their stock is going up. But, if you can get a good pass-rusher. You have to take him.

I think that BB likes to go fill holes in FA so that he can go into the draft not having to draft for need. Right now, if we re-sign some key people (Welker, Vollmer, Talib, Edelman, Woodhead, and a few others) and maybe a couple of outside FAs, we're in pretty strong shape. That will put us in position to not have to reach. And if that's the case, BB can pretty much go where the value is. If there is a good value that fits a need, take it. If there isn't, or if there is a better trade value, trade back and/or out. Trading out entirely is probably not very likely, but it's certainly possibly depending on how the draft falls and what kind of offers are available.

I don't think they have a hard time trading down because teams have "wisened up" to not trading with the pats. That doesn't make any sense. If they think the trade is a good deal, it doesn't matter who they trade with. Even if it's a given that the patriots will pick a great player and make them look foolish (and that's actually not a given, not even close), the picks are worth the same no matter who is holding them.

Not sure why they couldn't trade down or if they didn't want to. The Dowling pick was a head scratcher and now he's chronically injured, apparently.

The one year they had 3 or #2 picks, Brace and Butler are both busts and Vollmer has been great. 1 out of 3 isn't really knocking it out of the park.

You don't see other teams trading a three for a two the following year. Or, a 1st for a 2nd and first the following year like we have. Al Davis gone. If you go by draft value charts, we got hosed on last year's trade downs. We traded 62 for 90 and 163. 286 points for 140 and 26. - 120 points.

Then we trade 163 back to GB for two 7's. The two seven's were only worth two points each compared to the 26 for 163. -22 points

Just for fun. No comp picks for now. Assume Pats pick 32. Most picks are loosely based on current NFL DraftScout rankings, with some adjustment for projection.

32. Anthony Barr*, OLB, UCLA. 6'4" 238#. Not currently ranked for 2013 by NFL DraftScout.

Super Beast!
A converted running back in his first year at OLB, Barr has exploded, leading the Pac 10 with 13.5 sacks this year. He has the speed and footwork to cover RBs and TEs out of the backfield, and would fit 2 tremendous needs: a stud pass rusher in the Von Miller mode, and a coverage LB. His 6'4" height also gives him an edge over most coverage LBs. Rob Rang notes: "Other than BYU's Ansah, there may not be a player in the country whose NFL draft stock has ascended as sharply this season as Barr's." He would allow the Pats to move Dont'a Hightower up to LDE opposite Chandler Jones.

*** Trade: Pats trade #62 (284 points) for 3rd and 4th round picks. For now I'll call it something like #80 and #105 (274 points).

80. Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon St. 6'0" 184#. Currently NFL DraftScout #134.

Stud Horse!
Underrated receiver with great speed and seperation that makes him a legitimate outside and deep threat, but able to run the full route tree and go over the middle. Nice hands. Solid overall receiver. Has drawn comparisons to Mike Wallace, but a bit less explosive and a more complete and disciplined receiver.

94. Brian Winters, OL, Kent St. 6'5" 310#. Current NFL DraftScout #101.

Sleeper Stud Horse!
Winter is a tough, athletic lineman currently playing tackle who most likely projects to guard in the NFL. Very physical, plays with a mean streak, and manhandles opposing defensive linemen. Durable. He fits nicely into the Matt Light/Logan Mankins kind of blue collar mold, and he could be a long term successor to Mankins.

105. Ra'Shede Hageman, DT/DE, Minnesota. 6'6" 301#. Currently not ranked for 2013 by NFL DraftScout.

Sleeper Stud Horse!
Hageman is a former basketball player and TE turned DE and then DT, who has thrived in his first year as a starter with 6.5 TFL and 5 sacks. He reportedly runs a 4.78 40 and has a 35" vertical. He has JJ Watt kind of athleticism, with a frame that could bulk up into the Michael Brockers range if desired, allowing him to project either outside or inside.

7a. Reid Flagel, OT, Ohio St. 6'8" 310#. Currently NFL DraftScout #395.

Sleeper!
A former TE with terrific athletic ability, Flagel was converted to RT this year and has performed well for the undefeated Bcukeyes. BB will no doubt have the lowdown on him from Mike Vrabel and Urban Meyer. The fact that he has only played for one year, has been limited to RT, and will not get to play in a bowl game should keep him under the radar.

7b. Dexter McCoil, S, Tulsa. 6'4" 222#. Currently NFL DraftScout #322.

Sleeper!
I'm going almost entirely based on McKenzie's judgment here. But the idea of picking up a 6'4" 222# safety with fluid coverage skills to add to the existing mix in place of Pat Chung, in addition to a 6'4" 238# LB with fluid coverage skills, would add an enormous dimension to the Pats' defense in terms of the ability to cover TE's and big WRs. According to McKenzie this kid has long arms, 4.5 speed, fluid hips, and good instincts, processing speed, and leadership ability. That's a darn good start on a 7th round DB pick.
