Eagles put CB Samuel on trading block....

If we did bring asante in, would there be a chance he could play free safety?

I suppose there's a chance that any CB could play FS, but there's no real possibility that Asante Samuel would be looked at by the NEP, at least not at this point in time.

He served his purpose here as a 4th round pick, but once it got too expensive to keep him they did not budge from their general view on overpaying for the position.

On top of that, Asante Samuel has a lot of things that do not fit into the 'Patriot Way,' some of those are general poor football playing skills.

The bottom line is that Samuel would want way more money than Belichick would ever be willing to give him.

Those 2 wouldn't even be in the same ballpark--not even in the same zipcode, and that's IF Belichick would even want him here.

Boy, that's a tough picture to look at.

There are a lot worse things in life that could've happened, but losing both of those SB's in almost the same fashion (actually this past one may even be argued as worse, seeing as how they outscored them 17-0 at one point) is something that will take a long time to get over for me personally.

I suppose that's the fine line between the great feelings that come with winning, and the lousy ones that come with losing.

can you have self-schadenfreude??

if so...I got it....

Really, WTF? I don't need that. C'mon, man!

No self esteem issues as far as I know, but I am definitely bat-sh!t crazy.

In all seriousness, maybe the post sounded a bit dramatic, but I won't lie and tell you that I don't think about certain sceanrios of those 2 games.

So close, and yet so far.

I get the concept...and my concept is NO to Ashante....

I'd rather draft a CB. Preferably out of the SEC where they are already battle tested against speedy receivers that run good routes. Brandon Boykin, I'm looking at you. A Pats type of player that saw time in all three phases, is an excellent return man, a solid tackler, and excels in man coverage. He would look great with a Flying Elvis on his helmet.

Yeah, he's only one of the best receivers we've ever had. But let's crucify him for being unable to haul in a tough catch that the statistics showed he rarely had to make over the course of the season. :ugh:

Hit him in the hands.

Not going to crucify the guy over it but it hit him in the hands. for 9 million a year you have to catch that. Same thing can be said about Samuel in Superbowl 42, for what he got paid he has to make that play.

At $8.4M in new money for 2012, the Eagles are going to cut him. No one pays their 3rd CB that kind of money. With that contract, his trade value is zero. So he's going to be free agent. He's going to get a short-term deal (maybe a 2-year deal with little or nothing up front) from somebody. Why not the Patriots? Is he not better than the parade of JAGs that we had last year?

It hit him in the hands only because he had to contort his entire body for the pass to do so. I understand that Brady was worried about the safety but that wasn't a catch that Welker was assustomed to making, as Bedard pointed out following the game. Also, I think it's fair to say that Welker's catch was just a TAD more difficult to make than Asante's.

Welker should have had the catch. Let's move on.

It's a play that both Brady and Welker wish they had back. Brady would like to have thrown it in a slightly different spot, and Welker would like to have hung on, no matter where it was thrown. I'm sure both guys have some regret.

What's done is done. 2012 should be a tremendous season for the Patriots.

geez, chillax Kontra...that was a sarcastic swipe at Ashante..."crucify" is a bit over the top, off the cliff and into the abyss...

You're misrepresenting my argument. I'm not trying to excuse Welker. Any time a pass hits you in the hands, you should catch it. However it's not fair to put all the blame on him for that. O'Brien noted as much and Bedard pointed out that Welker rarely had to make those types of catches throughout the course of the season. That was a bad throw by Brady. He could have hit Welker in stride. There might have been a big hit but Welker has taken those hits God knows how many times. That fateful play was a combination of a bad throw by Brady and a missed opportunity by Welker. The dropping of the Butterfingers in public combined with the attitude of some of the people on this board is a bit much.

My apologies, buddy. I don't roam these parts as much and it's hard for me to tell sarcasm. Mea culpa, good sir.
