FYI when a DL bats down a pass it is considered a pass defensed.
Touche,,,,,but....that goes for Mr. Ware as well.

I wish I never read this post. Now I'm getting depressed that all these great ideas will never happen. If we had only one significant move for 2012, it would be Allen. Makes sense. Can do end on 4-3 obviously and at 270+ and he is only 10 lbs lighter than Jarvis Green who played some pretty good 3-4 DE here but also three inches taller. I have also seen Allen drop into coverage. He has had 42 passes defended in his career (are you shocked?)plus 5 Interceptions. I had a very good Pats writer tell me his opinion that if we did a 3-4 Allen would not fit.
Now for all the nay-Sayers. DeMarcus Ware is an OLB for the Boys in their 3-4. He and Allen are the same age. Allen has more career sacks on a far inferior Team. And here comes the Allen "can't back up once in a while" myth, Ware has only one career interception and has less that half the PDs at 21.
Here is my theory. Most here would agree that Ware would be cheap at $11m this year and $13m next. Mouths would be salivating for that addition to our Defense. That is about where Allen is signed the next two years.
I say Allen can cost us a first rounder. Rumor has been out by many Pro Football Media Outlets that Allen can be had, as the Vikes are going younger. Three of their best Vets were just let go for CAP room. The Vikes fan base is in an uproar about that. Allen leaving would add to that but......I can see the Vikes taking our first rounder and going after Wallace as WR and OT (Kalil should be a first day starter) are the top needs. They now have the CAP space and he and Ponder will be a talented young pass tandem in the league for a while. It takes pressure off slot WR Harvin. The fan base would like to see points scored and excitement. Allen also has two pretty good young DEs behind him as well.
In my opinion you make the trade for one of our firsts that BB will pee away anyway for a bunch of fourth or fifth rounders after he down trades the two or three we might get for that first rounder. Extend Allen to a CAP friendly number. I believe Allen would enjoy the possibility of a ring which is impossible within the next three years of his career with the Vikes especially with the youth on the Lions and Packers.
Anyway, I would pay Allen and the pick before Samuel although I can see him here if agreement between money wasn't his way.
Where as Samuel is a ball hawk and in the box tackling not his forte, how about Samuel as a FS?

I agree with Andy, there are about 8.4 million reasons why we shouldn't want Asante right now. If he gets cut and will take a deal that shows his actual value I wouldn't mind seeing him back, otherwise, he isn't worth the money. Our biggest problem on defense is that a wide receiver was the best tackler in the secondary last season. Asante doesn't fix that.
Asante has some skills situationally depending on scheme, but he also has many warts, most of which have been mentioned already. His biggest though is his total self absorbtion and unwillingness to be a team player. Which is why he's been on the trading block for a long time and they've been actively attempting to trade him for two off seasons now. He doesn't care what scheme you play or what personnel moves you manage to make, he is a starting LCB or he pouts. He offers little or no scheme versatility between his game and his attitude. And he's not talented enough to be that demanding or get away with the diva act. He's been nothing more than a waste of resources for Philly through 4 years of a 6 year hype driven deal. I do believe I predicted they would soon live to regret ever making that deal - and they have.
Jackie MacMullen may have misquoted the tat, but she was spot on about the intent. Some players who enter the league with a chip on their shouder use it to motivate themselves to become better than their critics anticipated. Others live for the opportunity shove it up their critics and some teams ass. Asante is the latter kind of persona who will point to his individual stats selectively and thump his chest and basically say screw anyone who doesn't get me... He is all in as long as Asante Samuel is what the in is. He's not a leader, can be a divisive locker room presence although he's such a loner his influence is limited, he doesn't handle adversity well, he's never accountable, he doesn't elevate the play of those around him, and while he may be coachable to an extent he also refuses to credit coaching for even facilitating his development. No way you add that guy to a young secondary devoid of any real leadership at this juncture. All he'll ever teach them is to get yours.
The 2012 Patriots secondary is utterly mysterious at this point; I can see it being atrocious or great or anywhere in between based on the current roster. But can't really envision a scenario where Asante returns. Whether he's traded or cut, he's almost assuredly going to be making more than he's worth.
I do not want a CB who shies away from contact, ball hawk or not.
The Patriots Defense forces enough turnovers. They need a consistently dominant pass rush or cover corners. Take your pick.
He can't be any worse than our corners...why not?
