2012 Patriot Picks: What players, what positions do you want?

I'm a big fan of Mercilus, and he has definitely moved himself into 1st round consideration. Todd McShay just put him into the Scouts Inc top 32 players, but I think he might have Mercilus mixed up with someone else.

They have Mercilus listed as a DT at 6-3¾ and 363lbs.

That doesn't sound like Whitney Mercilus to me.

People talk about Donta Paige-Moss this and that but if you watch film it's Coples drawing the double teams and still getting things done. Hear this every year. if your looking for a falcons for Julio Jones type trade from BB then i wouldn't hold your breath.

That just isn't his MO as seen by the quote from demetriof last year about how he spoke to BB about the trade and apparently BB said not in a million years as the value didn't stack up.

Ok so have adjusted the Mock so far in light of some bowl games and some injuries may leave some others in poaching distance.

I will say that i think with a full pre season we go back to the 3-4. So my draft is predicated on this.

1A.) Whitney Mercilus DE/OLB - There ever lasting hope for a 3-4 edge rusher i like the look of mercilus.

1B.) Trade out/down/into next year for arguments sake same deal as last year (1st in 2013 2nd in 2012)

2A.) Mark Barron Saftey (Maneuver our way to top of the 2nd to get Barron to pair with Chung)

2B.) Dwight Jones WR - Do we dare take another NC wide receiver? I have thought about it and usually i would be against another WR but this is a pick for the future as the reality is branch will be gone sooner than later and it would be nice for a young reciever to emerge (at a possition other than slot CB)

2C.) Vinny Curry/ Donte Page-Moss DE/OLB - like in other years we double dip at Rusher and doing a Tate/Gronk/Ras-I where we gamble on an injured talent hoping they come good and become a steal.

From what little I've seen, Jerel Worthy looks better than Still (or at least more impactful, think Nick Fairley compared to Marcel Dareus). As things are panning out at the moment, it looks like Worthy could fall near to where we already are. I think there's better value in waiting for Worthy and keeping our picks. That's predicated on us sticking to a 4-3, Still would probably be better in a 3-4.

I said it elsewhere, but if we are going to trade up, I'd rather use 2B and go and get DeCastro - it's not often we are in a position to draft a generational talent like him.

What are peoples' thoughts on Marvin McNutt 6'4" WR from Iowa?

He was recruited as a QB and one pundit cited that he had no problem reading coverages which would be useful since the Patriots ask their receivers to run the route depending on how the defense lines up.

I have watched plenty of McNutt over the past couple of years and I can tell you his biggest issue is explosion, speed, and/or seperation. He has good hands and runs a decent route tree, but when he goes up against upper level DB's he really struggles to get off the line and get seperation.

I think he is going to have a tough time getting open in the NFL on a consistent basis. I think he is a 3rd or 4th round pick.

I have a feeling that with the injury and the way he called out his team and coaches on twitter that he probably will not be on the Patriots radar. As of now he is no better than a 5th or 6th round pick.

1. I agree with your general point that we wouldn't move to top 10 from 2 picks b/t 26-32

2. I'm not entirely convince BB wasn't trying to talk Demetriof out of it so the Pats could move up for a cheaper price

3. I could see a move from 26 to say 17-19.

Worthy, who I like over Still, is a gap shooter.

Key Example-Wisc MSU game (1st one)
For the 1st qtr, MSU had him 2 gap and he was ineffective. He didn't get off his blocks fast enough, didn't provide any pressure.
2nd qtr
They finally make him 1 gap, and he starts dominating.

He looked good. Right now it looks like he's going to be a late round pick. To bad we don't have one right now. But we can always trade down.

With 5 picks in the first 3 rounds this is who I'd like to see in the fold next year.

Nick Perry (or Whitney Mercilus)
Alshon Jeffery (or Mohamed Sanu/Kendall Wright/Best WR available)
Chase Minnifield (or Casey Hayward)
Derek Wolfe (or Jared Crick)
Audie Cole (or Danny Trevathan)

Defense heavy draft I know but unless BB goes the FA route we need help there.

As much as I would like to add a prospect at a few spots on offense I really think we need to go almost entirely defense with our draft picks. The fact of the matter is we don't know where our hit will come in the draft but we need it to be on defense. If we draft 4 defenders with our top 4 picks there's a strong possibility we'll have two impact rookies next year on the D.

I'm a believer in BPA but to a point. You need to continually add high quality youth to all positional groupings. Having so many picks means we can move to get our top D prospect available at 15(ish) or later. Even if you overpay by the value of a 3rd rounder I'd do it. The hit rate of a 3rd is awful. If I have to pay a 3rd to ensure you get your top DL instead of getting a WR who has the same draft grade I do it and don't think twice.

We desperately need help where this draft is very strong--at OLB/DE.

I prefer Nick Perry with our first number one, but he'll likely be long gone. Don't move up. Nab another player who might still be available, though he too is moving up: Whitney Mercilus.

With our next pick in the first round, a DT. Flip a coin. Jerel Worthy (my preference) or Fletcher Cox.

Vince played way too much this year.

In the second round go with the best players available, probably CB or a TE. If Michael Floyd is available, the WR from Notre Dame, I'd go with him. I understand he goes early in the second, before we are picking. But maybe not.

You can't go all defense. You gotta keep Tom Brady happy.

First, I never ever subscribe to picking WR or RB in the first round. I personally think its a bad investment. Also there is a high chance we pick up Lloyd in FA now. We dont need a blue chip TE either. Place to look on O is C. But that would be high for a C to go unless he's a freak. In that case we are too late to get him anyway.

Second, our D line before the injury, was solidifying into a good one. I can see a need at OLB, tho ours are playing well. Again if he's a freak, but again, he will be gone by the time we draft.

The area that needs the most help is the secondary and the position is Safety. I haven't looked at the draft class, but that is where I would look if I were looking to fill holes.

Its really simple.I want Devon Still or Worthy from MSU.Then draft Perry from USC as ur defensive end.In the second round i would take the DB from vanderbilt.Casey Heyward.In terms of wrs after that,i hope they draft a big wr.A Juron Criner or Tommy Streeter from miami.

Things are going to be very interesting for the Pats this off-season.

First, the Pats have to re-sign Kyle Love.

Then, the Pats need to focus on adding a 3-4 RDE and a 3-4 OLB.

With Nick Perry and Whitney Mercilius entering the draft, this looks to be another strong draft for these two positions.

Personally, I'd like the Pats to look at Coples from UNC or Winn from Boise for the RDE position. Then, for the OLB position, Chandler Jones or Andre Branch.

For Center, I really want Peter Konz from Wisconsin, though Ben Jones from Georgia might be a good consolation prize.

For Safety, Stephon Gilmore or Trumaine Johnson.

WR - There are several quick players who I think would really add to the Pats. One of which is Patrick Edwards out of Houston, who has excellent hands, runs good routes, does kick returns and punt returns, and has a work ethic similar to Welker. In fact, he's taken a path similar to Welker in that Edwards was a walk-on in Houston and had proceeded to become their best WR.

First, I hope the Patriots keep their picks in the first two rounds. We need all the defensive help we can get. Here are my favorites in each of the first two rounds:

1a & 1b:

DE/LBs: Branch, Curry, Mercilus I would be happy with any one of these guys to get after the QB.

CB: Minnifield I believe that BB coached his father when he was at the Browns

WR: Wright this guy has the speed to stretch the field

ILB: Hightower I think Spikes is too slow to be starting at ILB


2a & 2b:

S: Lester, McDonald I doubt that either rate as first round pick, but we are in desperate need for help in the secondary

C: Brewster I think Koppen is slowiing down and needs to be replaced

WR: Jones This guy is a big target for Brady
