2012 Patriot Picks: What players, what positions do you want?

If the Pats are looking at drafting a C in 2012, one interesting guy to watch out for is Barrett Jones from Alabama. He's currently starting at LT, and has started the last 2 years at OG, but he has moved around this year and has gotten some snaps at C. The reason I think Jones could be a great NFL C is because he is really quick out of his stance, has good footwork, quick hands, is really inteligent and has the size and strength to hold up against bigger NT's. Add in the fact that he has started for 3 years in the SEC under Saban and I think he will be a very good pro. He has the skillset to play OT in the NFL, but his short arms could push him inside. If he can make the transition I think he could be better than both Brewster and Konz and be an elite NFL C. He is only a junior, but if he does declare I would take a long look at him. The transition could take some time but the the potential is immense.

Does anyone else that has seen him think he can make this transition?

Logan Mankins was a LT in college.
Nick Kazcur was a LT in college.
Dan Connelly was a LT in college.

Miss St has an interesting prospect who seems to have the versatility we like. Quentin Saulsberry 6'2" 300 lb. He's playing C this year. Started at LG in 09 and RT IN 10.

Sanu set the single season reception record for the big east. The more I watch him play the higher I get on him. This kid is going to be special. Hoping the Pats go Safety or Linebacker and Grab Sanu in the first. Center/Guard can be adressed in the second.

6'2" - 300? Too small. We've already wasted the last 3 years (& a precious 4th-rounder) on Lil' Richie OBurger.

I don't mean to bust your chops, but I want my interior linemen closer to 6'3"-6'4" and 310-320 lbs.

4th rounders are not that precious --- league average hit rate for a solid starter out of the 4th is under 25%. Basically by definition a 4th rounder who is a solid JAG is a successful pick. I'm not defending Ohrenburger, but your valuation is off.

So I assume you wouldnt want a Center that was 6'2 295lbs? Doh, I just described Jeff Saturday! Someone should go back in time and tell him he doesnt have the goods to be successful as an interior lineman.

Being shorter actually gives a lower center of gravity, sometimes you'll hear people talk about how a lineman 'plays too high' which allows an opponent to get underneath him win that battle.

I'm discussing various measurements a players actual play on the field often gets lost.

I'm not sure there's a stud 3-4 DE in this draft, but Still is the closest to being that guy. He's definitely not without his red flags, though.

What are his red flags? The only game I watched, Nebraska, he looked worthy of a first round grade (although not top 10).

Tremendous again yesterday. Despite the worst weak a college team can go through. He reminds you so much of Ty Warren. I'm sure he can step in and play that 2-gap spot we're going to need if we go back to the 3-4. Still and Upshaw or Curry would be a heckuva 1st round and improve our front 7. I haven't seen him play yet. Just reading about him. But, Dontari Poe - Memphis might be able to be that 2-gap end we're going to need.

I'll probably get ex-communicated from the church of Belichick for saying this. But, part of me does wonder if we value the type of players it takes to play defense in the new NFL. We like those big, strong and tough players. Eyeball test says we're a lot beefier than most defenses. Should we target the faster, more athletic player who plays in space better? My point is the 2 gap end. Richard Seymour ain't walking through that door. But, is the difference between a lesser player and a JAG that important? There are 2 gap ends doing well like B. Kiesel in Pitt and Devito on the Jets. Do we really need to emphasize that position as much as we do? Just get a guy who plays the run well. Take him out in your nickel. Get your pass rush from your olb's. A la Pittsburgh. I'm ducking and heading for cover to shield myself from the incoming!

I also like what I've read about Poe and like you haven't seen him play.

Regarding the second paragraph:
1. I think you under rate DeVito and Kiesel
2. Seymour ain't walking through the door because we haven't attempted to draft his replacement.

Motor concerns, mostly. He's always been talented, but never quite put it together until this year. That 3-4 DE spot is one where you can't take a play off or the whole defense will get gashed.

Keisel is a beast. I would rate him as good as Seymour and he is underrated.
As for Devito, he is a beast run defender. Not that good in pass rush dept. Basically he is the opp. of Mike Wright.

Greetings,
I would like for the Pats to get Alshon Jeffery in this draft. Many people think he could be a top 10 pick, but if he can't get his weight together could fall to the second. His stats are down from where they were last year. I have not watched him play this year, but last year he looked like the best receiver in college football to me. I was watching him against Alabama last year and when I saw his catch @ 2:27 of this video Alshon Jeffery vs Alabama 2010 - YouTube I wanted this guy to be a New England Patriot.

With that being said, I feel this guy could be the second coming of Calvin Johnson or Chad Jackson, depends on how hard he works.

Hello,

I think they should target:

DeCastro G/C (he was a center in high school I believe)
TJ McDonald safety
Winston Guy safety (Kentucky) - later rounds
Manti te'o ILB Notre Dame (could probably play OLB too in a 3-4)
Semu WR Rutgers

DeCastro is probably late 1st the other guys are 2nd/3rd rounders except Guy who is probably later.

Not sure who they get for a DE or if they're going back to the 3-4 or what. Or if Anderson and Carter could play OLB in a 3-4.

What are his red flags? The only game I watched, Nebraska, he looked worthy of a first round grade (although not top 10).

Tore his ACL his freshman year and was red-shirted. Then broke his leg right before the start of his second year. I'm guessing some of the red flags are injury related. He appears healthy now. But, he'll have to get those medicals checked out.

What are peoples' thoughts on Marvin McNutt 6'4" WR from Iowa?

He was recruited as a QB and one pundit cited that he had no problem reading coverages which would be useful since the Patriots ask their receivers to run the route depending on how the defense lines up.

I like Marvin Mcnutt, veryr underrated. He and Dwight Jones will be productive wrs at the next level. This team needs one of these 6'3 or 6'4 wrs on the outside to go with a speedster.I like Kendall Wright from Baylor.

Ryan Broyles in the 4th v. Wright in the 3rd, discuss.

If they stay 43, I want Vontaze Burfict badly. Stick his ass at the Sam and you've got a damn good 3 man rotation with good depth. That's two mean SOB's linebacker who make plays and a tackling machine at the will. He could immediately contribute on special teams at a high level as well.

What do i want.....a stinking PASS RUSHER, thats what. I work hard ....every day. I eat all my vegitables, i don't drive slow in the left lane, i visit my elderly parents once a week, if someone ha a couple of items i let them go ahead of me in the check out line, i use to work with the mentally disabled etc. etc. etc i think ive earned a pass rusher next April. :)
