Wow, sounds like Dearth has had a rough year.

Camp of 'unfamiliarity' for Redskins special teams - Boston.com

Dearth was a distracted player last year, and for good reason. His grandfather died before the season began, then his father was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer and was given a year or two to live. Then his mother died from heart failure in November. Dearth is a devout Christian and was a popular figure in the Jets locker room,

I know Katula was a bit shaky in camp, but did he have any bad snaps? He made a special teams tackle last night. Kinda surprised in the sense that they cut him before bringing Dearth in and seeing him play in a game situation.

Katula had a high snap in the first preseason game against the Jags.

I would expect Dearth would have been contacted beforehand and the deal to bring him in was most likely arranged prior to the announcement of Katula being cut.

Re: wilhite, sanders among cuts

I don't get it.

What don't you get? That we (the fans) can't fairly evaluate Dearth before we've seen him play? Or the fact that I miss Lonnie Paxton?

Why Katula was cut and this guy was signed. Was Katula really that bad?

Your guess is as good as anyone else's. When evaluating a long snapper, I think there are only 3 real things to look at:

1) Consistency of the Snap
2) Holding your block if the opposing team is trying to block the punt/fg
3) Getting down field if the opposing team is planning on running back the punt.

One thing that Lonnie did was he always got downfield even after blocking..

jeezus people!....we're talking about a Long-snapper......who can also play TE....besides,his christian background will offset the evil-ass of AH with the "big guy' upstairs:rocker:

Re: wilhite, sanders among cuts

Until we see how Dearth does as a long snapper on special teams, we can't truly evaluate him, can we....

God, I miss Lonnie...

As do I. A great specialist and an even better snow angel artist haha. Seriously though he and Larry Izzo were a couple of my favorite special teamers.

What I don't get is why Bill allowed Paxton to sign with Skippy in Denver in the first place.

Re: wilhite, sanders among cuts

Denver paid more than anyone has every paid for a long snapper, lot more.

He has OLD BALLS

Just kidding age really doesn't mean anything at that position

What are you talking about? If his balls are too old they'll get in the way of the snap!

Can you say we now have a Dearth of talent at long-snapper? :singing:
