Dead cap money clause: Jets conspiracy or innocent oversight?

This is ESPN New York's Equivilant of Mike Reiss. Ill just leave this here.

If the Jets are 3 million over the cap this guy certainly isn't acting like it.

"you should feel conf about getting Holmes back."

"#Jets are in negotiations with Santonio Holmes, per source. Also talking with Nnamdi Asomugha. Could they pull off a daily double? "

"the Jets have made an offer to WR Santonio Holmes. Prediction: #Jets wrap up Holmes deal within 48 hrs. He's their No. 1."

Did Goodell give the Jets a salary cap exception that i don't know about?

as further proof of the Jets continued criminal conduct, their idiotic, degenerate worshipping fans are silently, like the green rat cowards they are. reading this board and running back to Rathole Insider with our threads. Gutless cowards that mirror their gutless team. Just google Slikmojet and read what it's like to be a scurvy little cowardly green rat in his rat hole. Do NOT give that rat hole, or its rat hole members even the courtesy of a click and read...the ensuing decontamination could well run into MONTHS...and we wouldn't want any of our great fanbase to miss even a second of the obliteration in store this season for the DegenerJets.

F the Jets! They want to be the NJ Heat more power to them. We won the division last year when they had superior talent, our defense can only get better.

I bet if the patriots got blown out 45-3 our forum wouldn't go into lock-down mode for the entire night. They can put that on their garbagecan forums.

Eh, let them have their moment. They've won the offseason Super Bowl for about five years running now, and it still hasn't gotten them to a real one.

I'm sorry I am not buying a conspiracy this time. I do think Goodell does favor the Jets and sometimes the Giants over other teams, but I don't think a negotiating team led by Bob Kraft and Jerry Jones would willingly accept a concession that benefitted one team that Goodell played favorites to. Especially in Kraft's case, his biggest competitor.

To think that Goodell would play games in a fragile and tense negotiation like the CBA battle was to give the Jets an advantage this year in free agency is a little too much to believe. I don't doubt that Woody Johnson pushed for this provision, but I doubt Goodell could sneak it in.

The way i see it even if they do get Aso they still have to cover branch, welker, gronk, Hernandez, and Woodhead or who ever they have in the backfield. Also we still have the greatest Quarterback to play the game who can make the best cornerbacks look mediocre. last i checked they still have a d-line who is mediocre and some safeties who brady threw for 326 touchdowns and 4 td.

While Kraft's wife was dying and he was trying to do his best for the NFL, Woody Johnson was selling his vote for a price.

Always knew that guy was a creep.

Don’t forget the pressure they have to carry all season long, FAT REX’s talking puts a lot of pressure on that team, guys like Bart Scott thrive off it, but some guys like Mark Sanchez seems to mostly shrink from it.

The thing is that its a player-favored provision that only benefits select teams, but benefits all of the players. under the new CBA, teams are required to spend up to 99% of the cap in 2011 and 2012, clearing the dead money away means that these teams will have to pay more in order to reach that percentage. it would be difficult to argue if you are an owner for why this would be put in. so unless the players specifically wanted it and used it as a bargaining chip, i doubt it would pass.

The thing about this dead money drop (lets just call it that) is that it only effects dead money before a certain date, if they truly wanted it to be fair, they would have issued a period where teams could benefit from this change after it was enacted, so for instance, instead of being slapped with 2 million dollars in dead money for cutting Tully Banta-Cain, they would free up the total 4 million for their cap this year.

So either this whole thing is complete BS or the owners and players just spent 4.5 months putting together a new CBA with stupid loopholes and crappy language.

I dont think its a question of slipping a rule into the CBA to help the Jets, but a question of tipping them off in March that it was likely to be included.
There was no logical reason for the Jets to need to make those cuts then.

I mean, given the FACTS surrounding Goodell's decisions vis a vis the Pats AND the Jets over the span of the past four years, how does this NOT fit PERFECTLY into the overall conspiracy theory?Year after year, month to month, week to week...nothing but smoke...yet there's no fire...

yeah, thats rex's style and his downfall. if you look at the jets roster they have one good RB, a QB who has leader qualities but thats about it, as it sits only one decent receiver in cotchery. the have so many holes and depth problems and they thing having two great corners is going to get them touchdowns. i honestly am not scared of Aso and Revis because last i checked the pats proved that they can throw on revis.

Conspiracy? C'MON. I love when I hear stuff like this. Either you guys are watching way too much UFO crap or Belichick needs to up his spy game and get away with it again in the hearts of millions.

The only conspiracy I'd like to see explained is your ability to last 44 posts here. Ingrate.

BTW...I am one very happy Joker that this strike is finally over....nothing quite like getting a good froth going...gotta admit, the Jets are the perfect adversary...eminently hatable, completely, totally bereft of any morals, loud, brash and willing to blindly lead with their chins....God, I love it so...

Yup. I think you summed it up nicely there.

And yes, I do believe that Goodell gave the JESTS a head's up about this possibly coming down the tracks. As Andy said, no other reason really explains their actions otherwise.

i really dont understand why people cant see another reasoning they had a guy coming off of a foot surgery and around 33(woody), and super bust(gholston), and a guy who lets face it was done and they knew he was going to retire (jenkins). the think i cant stand is how can anyone want to play for rex after he basicly threw gholston under the bus saying he never really wanted it he was lazy. it shows no class but i guess thats what players want?

I disagree.

The Jets made those cuts in late February/early March because they wanted to accelerate all of the bonus money onto the 2010 payroll, rather than being burdened with dead cap space going forward.

Since 2010 was uncapped, if they cut all those guys before the new league year was supposed to start (originally March 4th, extended to March 11th), they could tack on as much dead money as they wanted to the 2010 "cap" because they did not have to be salary cap compliant.

By doing this, they were able to rid themselves of a lot of their overpaid/injured/bust contracts and cleared up a lot of space to re-sign key free agents like Harris, Holmes, Cromartie, etc. While it was a big hit for Woody Johnson's pocket to take, it was a very shrewd move by the Jets management because it basically gave them a clean slate for the 2011 season.

I have been trying to tell people this for a while. Take a look at the Jets contracts -- they had a ton of flexibility regardless of what was going to happen. Plenty of guys could easily be cut with little dead money charge today (Bryan Thomas, LT, etc). Plus they could tack on all their dead money to the 2010 payroll by cutting guys before the new league year started. This doomsday that the Jets were allegedly headed for was never really going to happen. Tannenbaum is no dummy -- he knows what he's doing.

Take a look at this article, written by Jason of NYJ Cap, just after the lockout started. This was not a conspiracy theory or anything. Just shrewd business by the Jets, as much as we all hate to admit it, that saved them a ton of cap space.

NYJ Cap - Impact of February Cuts

This "cap jail" that the Jets were going to land in was a myth, and it's being proven true now. So many Pats fans were ripping the Jets for mortgaging their future, loading up for 2010 only, and spending irresponsibly.

Well, look at what's happening now. They franchised David Harris. The Jets were the first ones to call Santonio Holmes and are going hard after him in hopes of keeping him. They have already made him an offer. They have already called Nnamdi Asmougha and talked to him about teaming up with Darrelle Revis -- many people saw this as a fantasy but a LOT of people including, Adam Schefter, have said Nnamdi wants to come to NY and it could happen if things line up. They have supposedly already reached out and made an offer to Cromartie. They've also been connected to Plax and Randy Moss. Sanchez has come out and has said he's willing to restructure his deal. The Jets have contacted their other FA's like Braylon, Edwards, and Ellis to keep tabs on them. They've been linked to pass rusher Antwan Barnes as well.

All of this while the Pats are sitting on their hands, releasing their only decent pass rusher from the last two years, and signing UDFA's. Maybe Bill should take a page out of Tannenbaum's book for once and aggressively address our pass rush -- something that has sucked since 2008.

Doesn't seem like the new CBA or their aggressive addressing of needs in the past is going to hinder them going forward.
