The Pats are also equipped with two picks in both the first and second rounds of the draft, which would give them more than enough ammunition to acquire Fitzgerald if they'd like to explore that avenue. Fitz seems like a perfect fit for the Pats, guy has extreme talent along with a great attitude on and off the field, I know its highly unlikely Pats trade for him, but it would be awesome.

I was under the impression players can't be traded until there is a new CBA, or unless the NFL declares an impasse in the negotiations and declares the rules of their last/best offer to be the rules going forward.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the trading deadline passed back in October - and doesn't re-open until the new league year. The new league year coincides with the current CBA expiring (March 3). With no CBA - or unless the league declares an impasse prior to that CBA expiring - players cannot be traded.

So perhaps Fitzgerald can be had in a trade - and probably will be, given his contract situation - but until a new CBA is agreed upon this type of deal cannot be made.

I like Howe a lot, but unless I am incorrect on that (above), then he really should have pointed out somewhere in his column that this type of trade is contingent on a new CBA being in place first.

I agree but when your talents are going to waste as his are is AZ, he is a better fit for the Pats with a QB like Tom Brady.

Personally, I would rather spend what it will take to get Fitzgerald to get an elite pass rusher. This team needs spend far more effort to improve the front seven of the defense than the WR corp. If the Pats sacrifice significantly improving the pass rush to get Fitzgerald, I consider it an epic failure on Belichick's part.

I wouldn't give up more than a first and fourth for Fitzgerald especially since he wants to get paid. I don't think that will be enough to get him though.

The Pats had the highest scoring offense this past season and it didn't stop them from being one and done in the playoffs.

Pats do have serious front 7 deficiencies, but the game against the Jets also revealed some other problems. Brady is strictly a pocket passer, and if our WR's can't get open, we're in trouble. The draft is a crapshoot, if we can get Fitz for our 1st (28) then I say we do it.

True, but I do believe the chances of Arizona trading Fitzgerald once the CBA is in place are much higher than that of any other big name player. His contract expires this year and there is a clause in his contract that says he cannot be franchised. That means the Cardinals need to work out an extension for him now or risk watching him walk away in exchange for just the 97th pick of the 2013 draft.

Arizona does have a lot of space under whatever the new cap will be, but they also have a reputation for not spending as much money as other teams. Fitzgerald will turn 28 just a few days before the season starts; he'll never be in a better position to cash in on a big payday to the highest bidder after this season, so he may want to see what he can get as a free agent rather than take whatever the Cardinals offer him. Going to a winning team in a bigger market will get him better endorsement deals too, along with a better chance of returning to the Super Bowl.

It all adds up to a situation where Arizona may be better off trading him to the highest bidder rather than keeping him for one year and only getting a compensatory pick at the end of the 3rd round a year later in return.

How'd that running work out there? They couldn't get the tough 1 yard when they needed to.

And the foot injury had nothing to do with the game. It certainly didn't effect Brady during the regular season.
