Schefter: Logan Mankins to report, sign tender on Tuesday

Re: Logan Mankins signs tender

Why? Ty Law was always under contract. Mankins was not.
I'd say refusing to sign a tender and leaving your team hanging for months is worse than showing up for camp unhappy, but not missing a single practice or game. Ty Law made some statements but he never missed anything. Mankins made some statements and missed half the season. And yes I know Mankins wasn't technically under contract, but the Patriots still rightfully owned his services and he held out for all of camp, preseason and half the regular season.

I'm not sure I agree with that statement. Ty Law called Belichick a liar, Logan Mankins called the organization liars. But Law never held out, missed any practices or games. So I'd say their statements were equally offensive, but Mankins' actions were worse.
So first you say this is something not a lot of players will look to replicate, then you say it will happen again regardless.

Yes. I don't think the rookies on their first contract are looking at the Mankins situation and thinking "Thats what I'm going to do" based on how its playing out; however, another Patriot will hold out or refuse to sign a tender.

But it will have nothing to do with how the Pats handled the Mankins situation and everything to do with that player's personal thoughts, beliefs and decisions.

Re: Logan Mankins signs tender

Price to the practice squad. Maybe it wasn't a coincidence that they didn't fill the last PS slot.

I think Taylor is just fine sitting out for the next 6-7 weeks. Give him 10 carries in the last game or two and pound the 3 headed monster in the playoffs.

That looks like the safest and best way to go.

Rookies are an entirely different matter because there's no 1-year tender or showing up at week 10 and then leaving the team as a free agent that year. But I bet anything that rookies over the past 5 years or so looked at how the Pats handled, for example, the Ben Watson negotiations from his rookie year and the hardline stance they took with him and that impacted their own decisions.

I disagree. If a team is known for caving, that will affect the way a player approaches negotiating with them versus if they are known to be a team that does not cave in.

Re: Logan Mankins signs tender

Cant we get that guy Moss instead:p... Mankins will definetly help, but he and his agent ruffled a lot of feathers. Personally I think he's an a hole, but very useful on an occasional porus OL. But BB will handle this right and make the best decision for the team. Thats one thing I think we all can agree on.

If mankins would take around 7 million and Moss around 4 million we can fit both of them in perhaps if the cap is around the low 130's next year.

Re: Logan Mankins signs tender

WTF needs him. Trade him to the Vikings for a 1st rounder.

He's not under contract and he owes the team something? That's crazy, IMO. He owes the team nothing. The fact that he had no other NFL teams he could sign with was even harder on him.

Now, calling Kraft a liar is a significant issue.

Re: Logan Mankins signs tender

Mankins start in a week? Are you nuts? Be lucky if he's ready in a month. He may not even WANT to play. He may just be checking in as a formality. He has a chance of not being a FA next year if he doesn't clock in this year.

How are the Patriots caving? They are doing the opposite of caving. They made an offer and stood by it. Now Mankins is taking one on the chin and coming back two games early.

What are they supposed to do? Say thanks but no thanks and send him home? Come back in two weeks? That is illogical and only serves to make the team look small, petty and vindictive. Fine for message boards, not so much front offices.

If you want to be a Mankins apologist that's fine, but I still maintain that a guy who leaves his team hanging hurts the team more than the guy who shows up to camp and doesn't miss a single practice or game due to holding out. He may not have been under contract but he was still bound by the CBA and the CBA says the Patriots have his exclusive rights for the 2010 season.

Price never makes it through waivers. You'd be giving up a promising 3rd round pick. One of OLine more likely to go.

Re: Logan Mankins signs tender

I cannot stand Makins for his holdout and how he went about doing it. Calling Bob Kraft a liar really does not sit well wth me. But, we're 6-1 with the best record in the NFL and we just got better and deeper with him coming back into the fold.
The magical mystery tour that is the Pats 2010 season continues.

Nice. I like it. How about give mankins his 7 mil, and get moss for 2 mil and stick minni with the rest of his contract. That way randy gets his big payday, Vikes foot the bill, we get the 3rd round and Moss back.

I think that's where there is a disconnect. No one here is being an apologist; just pragmatists who see the value in having a Pro Bowl guard on the roster. Of course, in order to redeem that value, the team will need to play him. Which they will.

Never forget that BB was an econ major.

Good point. I forgot about the clearing waivers deal. :bricks:

Is Ventrone still hanging around?

Yeah, I think they'll probably play him. But if we're talking about who hurt the team more, I'd say Mankins did moreso than Law. Frankly I don't even see how that's debatable. Law said some things but showed up on time for training camp. Mankins said some things then missed half the season.

We are 6-1. Unless you contend that we would have beaten the Jets if Logan was here, he didn't hurt team.

Regardless of the silliness of many posters in this thread who think punishing a player for doing what the CBA allowed him to do is the way to go, the Patriots are probably thrilled to have their second best offensive player back (Yes.... with Welker still recovering, Mankins is the team's second best offensive player), and they'll try to get him back up to game speed as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately...or, really, quite fortunately...there's not a ton of chaff on this roster. The inactives shift around quite a bit, and they're getting meaningful contributions from 9 different rookies. Slater's injury is one unknown.
