Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

What on earth will happen when the unstoppable Buffalo offense meets the immovable Jets defense?

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

They WILL have a good defense. The best? No. The Steelers and Ravens will still hold that position.

Rex Ryan knows what he's doing on the defensive side. No doubt about that.

Lampshade I have heard darkness will cover the land for 30 days and 30 nights

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

This thread is ridiculous ...

Everyone knows the Jets are the best team before the season begins every year.

it has been this way since 1969 ... does namath still play for the Ratsies?

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

anywhere in that interview did rhodes or pace say we should 'mark it down'?

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

Other than Jenkins, they're weak down the middle. Jenkins also wears down over the course of games and over the course of the season.

I'm not buying into the "best defense" thing, sorry. There's a better defense that plays home games in the same stadium they do, and there's probably a better defense that plays games in a stadium named after a razor, and that's just 2 right in the northeast.

They are, of course, invited to try proving me wrong.

To that I'd add the team that plays 90 miles to the south down I-95 in Philly...even if they do collect ex-Pats.....

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

Rhodes is the tall, rangy ballhawk of a FS that is crucial to Ryan's 1-deep cover system. He's basically the key to their pass defense so I can see why he would be excited.

No. They SHOULD have a good defense. Injuries can derail that defense really quickly. In fact, if they lose Jenkins, they are toast because, as Deus Irae and myself pointed out, they don't have anyone who can step in. Also, they are extremely thin at ILB. An injury to Harris or Scott and the Jets Defense will be mediocre.

Ryan may know what he's doing on the defensive side of the ball, but he's the HC now. He's got a lot more responsibility. And it remains to be seen how much of an understanding of the offense he'll have.

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

JETS
2007
points allowed:
19th(355)
passing yards allowed:
9th(197)

2008
points allowed:
18th(356)
passing yards allowed:
29th(234)

In 2007 the Pats dropped 38 and then only 20 on them, the second game being in the rain.

In 2008 the B team managed 31 points in the second contest, led by Matty's 400 yds + 3 TDs.

but they added bart scott and jim leonhard, so now they're the best defense in the league.
looking fwd to week 2.

who was that mouthy steeler that brady torched?

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

So does Marvin Lewis who was the DC of the 2000 Ravens. How has that been working out for the Bengals defense? Or Romeo Crennel when he was with the Browns?

Being a great defensive coordinator doesn't mean you are going to have a great defense when you switch to being a head coach. Also, how good would Ryan have been if he didn't have Suggs, Scott, Ray-Ray, Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata, etc. This Jets team is not as stacked as the Ravens team was last year.

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

Week 2 might have been the initial target but somehow I don't think Manning, Delhome, Ryan, Palmer, or Breese will forget the claim when they dismantle them in weeks 4, 12, 15, 16, and 17 in addition to Brady mauling them in weeks 2 and 11

best paper defense vs. best paper QBs...

how did delhomme's name get in there........?

Thought he might be capable of putting up great numbers, even if he isn't a stats QB like the others listed

Anthony Smith. To be fair, though, Rhodes is actually good. Smith sucked, which made his trash talk even funnier. I don't even know if he's still in the league anymore.

Only if Steve Smith converts two 5-yard hitches and an out route into 120 yards and 2 TDs.

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

In Rhodes’ opinion, “We will be the best defense in the league this year. I feel for the offenses we’re gonna face.”

And outside linebacker Calvin Pace echoed that statement, saying, “I don’t think you’ll find a better team on paper.”

When I heard this on ESPN today, I started laughing at how delusional these Jets players are. Lets break down the "best" defense in the league shall we.

D-Line - Aside from Kris Jenkins, their D-line is pedestrian. Shaun Ellis is a 4-3 guy (on the decline) and Kenyon Coleman is lucky he is still in the league.

MLB's - Bart Scott is an upgrade over Eric Barton but Scott won't be able to reap the benefits of having Ray Lewis getting all the attention. In fact, Scott becomes the leader of that defense. On the other hand, Harris had a fantastic rookie year but didn't have a great second year probably because of his early season injury. It's comical when they put a former DE in Bowens at MLB. What a joke.

OLB's - They're nothing special and shouldn't scare opposing QB's. In fact, these aren't players that are going to take over games. Aside from grabbing 8.5 sacks in 2006, Bryan Thomas has been a disappointment. On the other side, is Calvin Pace who couldn't cut as a 4-3 defense end with the Cardinals. Of course, he gets a huge contract after having one decent season playing LB for the Cardinals. Looking at Pace's stats tell you he had a pretty good year with the Jets. However, like I said before, these guys won't take over games.

CB's - Aside from Revis, these CB's are going to get torched unless Sheppard resurrects his career. Remember, this guy was benched in favor of Joselio Hanson. Dwight Lowery had some moments but he had his rookie mistakes as well. Lastly, David Barrett loved getting torched when he was with the Cardinals and really hasn't been special with the Jets. Their reserves shouldn't scare anybody.

S's - Rhodes is their best player and that's about it. They brought in Leonard because he is familiar with Rex Ryans' defense and could possibly start. Last year, it seemed like Mangini couldn't make up his mind when he started different guys at safety. Sometimes it would be Eric Smith and other times it was Abram Elam. Elam isn't there anymore so it's up to Leonard or Smith to take over that spot.

In the end, the Jets will have a good defense because Rex Ryan is a very good defensive coach. But to think they are the most talented on paper? That is a laughable. Also, they are going to get torched twice a year playing the Pats now that Brady is back. Also, factor in the additions of Galloway, Taylor and the multiple TE's they brought in. I can't wait for week 2.

*I can't believe I just wasted my time analyzing the Jets defense.

Someone should tell Calvin how important it is to be the best team on paper: the 2001 Patriots weren't the best 2001 superbowl team on paper. But they were the best team on paper in the 2007 superbowl.

Re: Jets safety Kerry Rhodes: “We Will Be The Best Defense”

Ok I aint bothering to read the rest I'll just say it "Who gives a ****?!" If we were in their shoes we would be all hyped up if our team said this so lets please wait till kick off please. BTW during Kenny Chesney this year as every year if you have tickets you can shout your concerns to them as you climb the stairs when they are walking off the practice field. I did it in 07 and was not the only one

Rhodes is a terrific player but he's not allowed to have his friends over to play anymore unless Mom and Dad are home to supervise.

Last year, the jets waited until they were 8-3 to schedule the Super Bowl parade. In 2009, they're doing it in June and the NY media nitwits are eating it up.
