Speculation from Carolina Panther writer on Pats going after Peppers

Carolina is STUCK with Peppers and looking to Unload him for whatever they can get!

Here's a strange way to look at it: Trade us Peppers FOR A 7TH ROUNDER IN 2010, and we still might not be improving the team much. We would just be acquiring the RIGHT to negotiate with him and to pay him fair market value. If we're paying him fair value, we're not stealing anything, we're just being allowed to distribute our team payroll in a more lopsided way. Now our options are to

1) Pay him a ton (like the entirety of our remaining cap room) and forget about extending Wilfork, etc.

2) Offer him a modest package, have him refuse it and hold out, and end up giving away a 7th round pick for nothing.

A bit oversimplified analysis, but does the point I'm making make sense?

Again, I also wouldn't do anything that prevents us from extending Wilfork. Rumors are that talks between the Pats and Vince have heated up.

I like the James Sanders signing in terms of potentially going after Peppers. He is not spectacular, and I would have preferred Gibril Wilson or Sean Jones, but he is solid and at $9M/3 years is reasonably priced (Wilson got $27.5M/5 years with $16M guaranteed over the first 3 years).

I think that we won't see anything for the next several days at least on this front. I think the Pats will try to plug holes and extend key personnel, keeping a run for Peppers in mind and hopefully keeping a dialogue open with Carolina. We need an extra WR, a third S, and a CB. I would like to see us plug those holes and extend Wilfork. Then, if there is enough money left, make a strong run at Peppers with our cash reserve of draft picks, as long as we don't have to grossly overspend.

Mayo, Once again good post. I think the Peppers trade would be fantastic but I have plan "B" for less dollars if the Panthers won't play, and maybe pick up a draft choice.

In 2006 We all wanted Chris Gocong as the perfect Pats type of guy. He is a 263lb OLB in the Vrabel mold, smart and quick and has started to put his pass rush together. He is at the same point in his career as when we got Vrabel as in...just starting to "get it".

The Eagles are getting torched for allowing Dawkins to leave and sitting on their hands with tons of CAP money. They also lost their #2 RB in Buchhalter to FA. They lost TE LJ Smith to FA. We just signed Taylor, have Sammy Morris, Faulk and the Law Firm. We also signed two TE's in the last two weeks. I think Baker and Watson are one and two. They might even go for a kid like Casey because they can spread him like Clark and Cooley.

How about Maroney and TE Dave Thomas for Gocong and a third rounder? The Eagle have two other decent young OLBs to take his place. The Eagles are desperate for another bigger RB to spell Westbrook and heavens knows, Maroney is a split time back for sure. Thomas will never get playing time now but is more sure handed than Watson.

Mostly McNabb is pouting for some offensive help. The fans are screaming because the Eagles are sitting. This would be a great trade for both teams.

I just see Gocong as a faster, newer Vrabel. Again if we can get Peppers, disregard the trade for Gocong but perhaps take the Eagles second first rounder for Maroney and Thomas (#28)? Think they would bite on a one? How about another second rounder at #53. With our choices we can replace Maroney with a Donald Brown or Greene.

Gocong was one of BOR's binkies a few years ago, I believe. Maybe we can get Philly to trade Gocogn and Stewart Bradley for Maroney and Thomas.

Realistically, though, I don't see Philly biting. Maroney and Thomas for a #1? I wish. Gocong has been solid if not spectacular for them, and Jim Johnson values his DL guys. Can't see it, but give it a whirl of a big splash for Peppers or Suggs falls through.

What a fickle bunch fans are

Just a week ago everyone was saying how teams should give up a first for a potential franchise QB, and now when we are talking about a top, notch NFL performer we are not happy giving up the #23

Personally Id be happy to give up say the 1st and 3rd for Peppers if it was a decent wage. Still gives us 3 2nd round picks where there's a lot of value this year. Carolina must want him off the books so they can play in FA and I think this deal gets done in the next few days

Pat Kirwan was just on EEI and he's thinking the same thing, he thinks the Pats might not be done and still could be targeting Peppers.

Here's a fresh and very specific rumour.

Just heard on radio from the East coast that the Pats are clearing cap space for Julius Peppers!!! The report says that the reason the Pats gave Vrabel and Cassel tot he Chefs for a lowely 2nd rounder is because Pioli has promised Belichek that he will participate in a 3 way deal involving Peppers. Apparantly the Cheifs are going to get RB Jonathan Stewart from the Panthers and will send Gonzales and Brian Waters to the Panthers and they will send Peppers to the Patriots. I mean WTF is going on here. Every team is getting better and we are standing pat.

Some dude on a Chargers forum is pissed that the Bolts are doing nothing, so no obvious reason to invent a rumour, but anyhow. There you be.

BTW, it's from just yesterday.

I'd love to hear the rest of that.

Carolina losing Stewart and Peppers
KC losing Gonzo and Waters
Patriots losing nothing

Obviously there's more leaving KC and a lot more leaving NE.

Some second round pics.

Right, if this is even slightly real, there must be a high NE pick involved.

That said, if this was the Cassel deal pt. II, it would be a severe mind-fudge for everyone who's analyzed the ever-loving crap out of the "rip-off" that went down.

If there's any truth to it I would guess that the Pats would be either packaging a second and a lower pick or trying to trade the #34 up in to the first round to deal that, or perhaps deal the #23 now and then package the #34 at the draft to move up if a player of value needs to be taken in the first.

One things for sure, theres a LOT of smoke here so you have to think there IS a fire

That rumor sounds a little funky to me. Carolina is a "run first" team, and you can't have too many quality backs. They just drafted Stewart last year, and he had a solid rookie campaign behind DeAngelo Williams. I just don't see them trading him (though I didn't see Denver entertaining offers for Cutler, either).

It would be a great deal for KC. Stewart would be a pounding young RB who would complement Cassel tremendously. Waters and Gonzales both are aging and both want out. Doesn't seem like enough for Carolina though, even with picks thrown in.

I agree, but only that the Peppers --> Patriots is certainly trying to be worked hard at this point.

Not sure I believe the specifics just outlined there (otherwise KC and NE are about to HOUSE Carolina and I don't see that happening), unless there is a SIGNIFICANT amount of stuff underwater we can't see (picks or other people).

I def. don't believe any of the bunk about BB "throwing a player" (like Vrabel) into a deal as a favor in the HOPES that they'll be able to work out a deal in the future. Particularly when a 3rd team (wildcard) is involved. Teams just don't do that crap. This is a business, not a weekend round of golf.

But, with BB and Pioli involved, I could actually see it being something very out of the ordinary, almost "deal struck on the 19th hole" type.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see that the Cassel/Vrabel trade includes a 2nd part that involves the Pats/Chiefs/Panthers and which focuses on securing Peppers for the Pats and failing this, involves the trading of a Chiefs player (ie Gonzalez say) to the Pats for little compensation.

Yep. I'm locking in as the trade is not quite over - final answer.

If we can get Peppers for the right price while still be able to extend wilforks, mankins, and seymour's contracts then i say go for it. If not, then we could pick up an OLB in the draft!!

LJ?
He is only 29 same age as Peppers and has been an All Pro. Pain? Yes. Talent? Yes.
