It was a bad combination of injury to an important player at the most unfortunate time in a big game setting, combined with inadequate depth/experience for the reserves, and finally the fact that one of the more gifted and physical receivers in the league in last year's playoffs simply was outmuscling and had more talent.
If anyone is to blame the correct answer would be Bill Belichick for not having adequate reserves/depth, but these things tend to happen.
You have diagnosed the problem quite correctly. There was not enough depth.
In fairness Belichick needed 4 years to tear down the Browns and rebuild them from scratch. ( BB didn't need a total teardown in 2001). Only Tom, Vince and Jerod exist from before the tear down in 2009. Three years wasn't quite enough for a total rebuild. Going into Year #4, the LBs are now six starters deep, the secondary with 5 playable CBs, and 5 playable Ss is now deep, before retreating to ST players like Cole.
The interior DL is thin, with only two confirmed aging starters in Wilfork and Kelly, but hopes are high for young Armstead who was very highly rated in college and the CFL. Plus there is the long list of UDFA hopefuls, and the Cowboys draft guru thinks highly of "Pork Chop" Grissom. I personally think a DT drafted highup, is on BB next draft menu.
There are plenty of DEs candidates to supliment the two proven starters in Ninko and Chandler.
