Aaron Dobson - underestimated even as a rookie?

It was a bad combination of injury to an important player at the most unfortunate time in a big game setting, combined with inadequate depth/experience for the reserves, and finally the fact that one of the more gifted and physical receivers in the league in last year's playoffs simply was outmuscling and had more talent.

If anyone is to blame the correct answer would be Bill Belichick for not having adequate reserves/depth, but these things tend to happen.

You have diagnosed the problem quite correctly. There was not enough depth.

In fairness Belichick needed 4 years to tear down the Browns and rebuild them from scratch. ( BB didn't need a total teardown in 2001). Only Tom, Vince and Jerod exist from before the tear down in 2009. Three years wasn't quite enough for a total rebuild. Going into Year #4, the LBs are now six starters deep, the secondary with 5 playable CBs, and 5 playable Ss is now deep, before retreating to ST players like Cole.

The interior DL is thin, with only two confirmed aging starters in Wilfork and Kelly, but hopes are high for young Armstead who was very highly rated in college and the CFL. Plus there is the long list of UDFA hopefuls, and the Cowboys draft guru thinks highly of "Pork Chop" Grissom. I personally think a DT drafted highup, is on BB next draft menu.

There are plenty of DEs candidates to supliment the two proven starters in Ninko and Chandler.

Because Bill Belichick is infatuated with ex-Jets, ex-Bills, ex-Dolphins.
And you base this on what? The minimal amount we currently have on our roster?

Logan Ryans, someone that would be quality depth

Absolutely agree, I think he will be a very good pro CB, I still think there is a place on the roster for a impact ST player like Cole just the same. We carried DB's like Martin, and Williams last season for their ST value, I see no reason that Cole can't be carried for the same reason. I'm not expecting Cole to be more than a 6th string CB just like the two players I mentioned were last season.

Belichick chose to go with an injury prone CB (Dowling) when he didn't have adequate backups. He also went with 2 "ST only" types in Ebner and Cole, leaving the defensive backfield understaffed from the start. He then traded for another injury prone CB (Talib) when he still didn't have adequate backups.

Belichick chose terribly at CB/DB last season. BB's made a lot of mistakes in the last couple of seasons.

Until he has 53 all pros he should be looking over his shoulder.

I presume that you have cut Rivera, Niko, and Tarpinian, as most have.

In any case, I believe that a choice between STer Cole vs. STer Ebner is a reasonable one. You chose Ebner. I choose Cole.

Two "special team specialists" are enough: Slater and Ebner. Cole can go out the door or through the window, it's doesn't matter how to me.

I love how you guys have all these cuts already made. Players drop like flies in preseason and THIS one has started off with a bang. I love a good argument as much as the next guy but THIS roster stuff at this point is ludicrous.

If you go with six linebackers:

Mayo
Spikes
Hightower
Fletcher
Collins
Beauharnais

I believe Tarpinian still has another year of eligibility on the practice squad.

Speed Dial:

Edds
Koutouvides
Rivera

You need to have more fun in life.

I agree Logan Ryan is a better option to play CB; but if we can keep guys like Malcolm Williams, Derrick Martin, Mike Rivera, Niko Koutouvides, Nate Ebner, and Jeff Tarpinian on our roster because of their special teams I can make room for Cole any day of the week.
Marquice Cole is not a Scarlet Knight.

Steve will tell Dad to boot Marquice Cole off the roster for Brandon Jones.

All part of Steve Belichick's devious plan to infiltrate the New England Patriots defense with as many former Scarlet Knights as humanly possible.

James Sanders and Brandon Meriweather for Sergio Brown and James Ihedigbo was a stroke of genius!

Both of those cuts were inexplicable and abominable. Belichick obviously didn't like what he saw in them but was being cavalier with his immediate dismissal of them, simply assuming he had better options behind them. History says he was wrong.

Mods, can we close this thread and start another Dobson thread ? This one has gone WAY off track, don't even know what THIS discussion is all about, but it certainly ISN'T about Dobson.

Yeah, Meriweather was so awesome that he didn't even last a full season before being cut by the Bears, and Sanders was too out of shape in camp to make any contributions. He apparently agreed that he needed to get faster to stick around in the NFL, as he recently got busted for PEDs.

Brandon Jones Named BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week

There are a few other teams in the NFL with 8 players from the same school, a few more with 7, and a bunch with 6--so it's probably not as big of a deal as you're making it.

Unfortunately Rutgers isn't on par with the Alabamas and SCarolinas of the world though, but there are obviously some things they do well that Belichick agrees with, at least in terms of players who he may have been on the fence about anyway.

I think it's that we drafted three in the same year and then signed another as UDFA. In reality, BB has almost cut as many Rutgers players as he's drafted so it's not as though being a Rutger's alum is the golden wrapper that guarantees a prospect a place in Bill Belichick's Chocolate Factory.

Steve Belichick: Bali Mangthi Scarlet Knights

Steve Belichick: Shakthi Degi Scarlet Knights

Steve Belichick: Scarlet Knights .... Scarlet Knights .... Scarlet Knights, shakthi deh!

Steve Belichick: We search for the last two Rutgers players. Soon we will have ten Scarlet Knights, and the New England Patriots defense will be all-powerful!

Steve Belichick: You don't believe me? You will, Dr. Goodell. You will become a true believer.
