Why we don't value the X reciever position?

I doubt that we will draft a WR in the first 3 rounds.

If we want better than Bourne, Douglas, Osborne and Ju-ju, it will come in a trade anytime up to the new trade deadline. (yes, I am ignoring Thornton, Reagor and Boutte).

I buy it. The QB issue Is what is, and was detering players.. KJ Osborne even said himself the QB situation made him reluctant to sign until he met with Mayo and the pot was sweetened...
Pot? Careful now!

WR is one of those positions with a wealth of talent every year due to the sheer number of them on college and pro rosters, and their durability unlike linemen and RBs. I like the core guys on the current roster more than most, and believe that their relative lack of production is more a function of a bad OL and QB the last couple of seasons.

I think the Patriots will sign a couple of undrafted FAs at WR and pick up a veteran once cuts begin. Rookie WRs are plentiful in the first four rounds of every draft which in turn makes more expensive veteran WRs expendable as teams determine who they can keep to fit their financial model.

Why?

They have 8 draft picks, spend the first two on a QB and LT… that leaves 6 picks to burn on weapons if you want.

"DraftKings Sportsbook released a listing of win totals for every NFL team this season, and New England came out with the worst projection at 4.5." Yeah, I would say there just about right...I wonder why....

Really? Care to put money on that?

That's meaningless before the draft.

You put this in quotes. Who said this?

And yes, this team is about a 4-6 win team at best.

After going hard after Ridley I think it's pretty clear they will draft at least one WR. It's another deep class so waiting until round 3 makes sense but those X type receivers are harder to come by.

AND poor coaching

I see it differently. For me, the lesson regarding going after Ridley is that we will continue to try to trade to get a #1 WR.

We shall see come draft day. If the guy they like is gone on day 2 than that would be the time to start offering the pick up for Tee Higgins/Aiyuk. I made mention of the fact that Daniels played with Aiyuk at Arizona State on another thread.

Interesting look at recent rookie QBs w/ OL ranking and main receivers. Guys in yellow performed DESPITE poor OL play. Now look at their main receiver. Pats need one of those.

Well. No worries, with 4 to 6 wins draftkings estimates we will be at the top of the draft next year so we can try again to get weaponized.

Interesting and I tend to agree.

What do you think of what Harbaugh says here. They can have Nabers at #5.

BTW, I don't agree w/ him 100%. A great QB can make the OL look elite and a bad one makes them look like crap.

Offensive line is still extremely valuable and worthy of a high value resource. It's not so much that it's dropped rather than how much more important WR has become. Usage (before you never had guys playing x z slot, motion, everyone has to block now), task, volume has all increased everywhere. So again it's not OL is less important. WR are being asked to do a lot more and having a bigger impact bc of it.

Yes perception is huge here bc a OL can do everything right but if a QB sucks at manipulating a pocket or isn't on time with the assignment. Most will blame the OL.

Chargers are in a tough spot bc they just lost two all-star WR but need OL help. I would look at the system bc they weren't helping ot making anything easy on Herbert the past few years. They just drafted QJ last year who has a very similar skill-set to Nabers so that'll be interesting (I wouldn’t pass on Nabers bc of that just saying) A lot of intrigue at the top of the draft. Draft night will be fun.

Great explanation. Your an expert. How many years should the fans give Mayo for the rebuild?
Hes got a lot to work with believe it or not. A defense that has been proven in a time where defenses don't translate. A ton of money to spend with a fanbase that won't complain about spending. 3 top 70 picks in a draft where the strongest position groups are tackle, wr and qb.

So we should know a good deal by the end of year 2. He automatically gets 3-4 but we'll know whether he's got the right stuff very early.
What is your vision of year 1 with the Mayo regime? Wins and loses, hypothetical of course.
I really don't care about wins year. I want to see progress towards an explosive offense more than anything. The past few years have been the same stale product trotted out back to back to back. Very little change after a huge departure. I want to see us be more adaptable and multiple on offense while making some things our own. For example how the Rams used condensed splits / bunch sets to get open and help the run game at the same time. Like keep up with times while being innovative.

At the end of year everyone should be saying "ok, i get it" regardless of wins and losses. Especially since we'll probably be starting JB.

I didn't enjoy this year at all but will be ok with another 3-5 win year as long as things are shaping up.
How did Bill Fail? I believe he lost the coaching edge on coaching up low level players due to attrition of coaches and himself.
A good leader will always get dirty and do the work himself but a great leader doesn't have to even though he has that mindset. He's delegated everything to the right people he can trust and set up a structure that catches mistakes several times over. You insulate yourself with great people around you and its amazing what can happen. Teach them, show them the way and lean on each other.
For years Bill had that with Scar, Charlie, OB, Josh, Flores and on and on. As time went by he started losing great guys and took on more responsibility. So while Bill the GM really hurt Bill the coach. He had too much on his plate and while his stubbornness was praised and useful at times. It really brought him down in the end.

I'm still going with MHJ more than ever. His H.O.F Dad has coach him personally. He will be coached from his Dad to succeed thruout his career. Just like Karate kid. Will be an all pro from whomever is throwing the ball. Brisett will get 1k yds this year from him i.m.o.
