* Ye Official 2012 Mock Draft Thread!! *

Ok here's what I see happening right now, but again this will change WAY before the draft. It may change next week!!

#29. Nick Perry OLB34/DE43 USC

#31. Fletcher Cox DE34/DT43 Mississippi State

#49. Mark Barron SS Alabama

#63. Nick Toon WR Wisconsin

#94. Shaun Prater CB Iowa

#126. Ben Jones OC Georgia

Jones at the end of the 4th Round??

You're DREAMING, buddy!!

VERY refreshing set, though, all told!! :rocker:

1A. TE Dwayne Allen

1B. DE Jared Crick

2A. WR Nick Toon

2B. OLB Lavonte David.

Ah!! Very refreshing: Allen and David are unusual Picks, and David is an exceptional choice!!

There is a very good summary of the Pat's needs for 2012 available on NEP Draft. See link below (which i can now post!!)

End of Year Inventory: Patriots Draft Needs | NEPatriotsDraft.com - 2012 NFL Draft

I am going to have another go at a mock - based on the above and the NEP Draft top 100 Prospects as of now. Will allow a small amount of leeway on the positional rankings but no more than 3-4 in round 1, 5-6 in round 2 and 8-9 in round 3 to allow for risers/fallers.

I am working on the assumption that we have re-signed our key FA's (Welker, Carter, Anderson) and added a veteran DB.

Here are our Picks.

1st Rounders
#29
#31

2nd Rounders
#49
#63

3rd Rounder
#94

Round 1 - 29 OVR

The New England Patriots select Devon Still, DL, Penn State. The Pats give Vince some help on the DLine and indicates a shift back to the 3-4. However, Still is scheme versitile and can line up at DT in a 4 man front. A Team Captain, he has the flexibility and intangibles that BB loves.

Round 1 - 31 OVR

The Pats trade back to the top of the second round, picking up a potential high 2nd in the 2013 draft.

Round 2 - 40 OVR (approx)

The Pats select Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, North Carolina State. Enters the rotation as a 3-4 OLB.

Round 2 - 49 OVR

The Pats Select, Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC. The Pats double dip in the pass rush, in the hope that Carter and Anderson can groom Ingram, Perry and Cunningham as the long-term solution off the edge.

Round 2 - 63 OVR

The Pats Select Robert Lester, S, Alabama. The Pats play at S this year has been poor at best. Only Chung is a viable long term starter. In this scenario, the Pats have picked up a Vet. DB and Lester will join the rotation.

Round 3 - 94 OVR

The Pats Select David Molk, OC, Michigan. The Pats have coped well without Koppen, and may not wish to up him too much. If he does not take a home town payout, the Pats may wish to draft a replacement.

Oh, MAN!!

4 Defenders + 1 Grizzly, beautifully presented!!

Well DONE, sir!! :rocker:

Posted this in another thread but thought it was apt for this one too as it is a collection of all our Mocks:

Ok so have adjusted the Mock so far in light of some bowl games and some injuries may leave some others in poaching distance.

I will say that i think with a full pre season we go back to the 3-4. So my draft is predicated on this.

1A.) Whitney Mercilus DE/OLB - There ever lasting hope for a 3-4 edge rusher i like the look of mercilus.

1B.) Trade out/down/into next year for arguments sake same deal as last year (1st in 2013 2nd in 2012)

2A.) Mark Barron Saftey (Maneuver our way to top of the 2nd to get Barron to pair with Chung)

2B.) Dwight Jones WR - Do we dare take another NC wide receiver? I have thought about it and usually i would be against another WR but this is a pick for the future as the reality is branch will be gone sooner than later and it would be nice for a young reciever to emerge (at a possition other than slot CB)

2C.) Vinny Curry/ Donte Page-Moss DE/OLB - like in other years we double dip at Rusher and doing a Tate/Gronk/Ras-I where we gamble on an injured talent hoping they come good and become a steal.

3A.) Trade for 2013 2nd rounder

3B.) Michael Egnew TE or LaMicheal James RB - this scenario is predicated on whether we keep BJGE around or not. If not i see the carries shared among our existing RB's but i must admit i am excited by the talent and drive of someone like James who has been told his entire life he's too small. If BJGE stays i like the look of Engrew (cn we have too many TE's? i think not)

Nice to see some Love for WB Michael Egnew, who's been with every one of my Mocks since Mock 1.0 ~ I'm on #12, now!!

The Pats do have at least one useful asset (namely, Hoyer).

As to Hoyer I don't think any team is going to be like the Cardinals in pursuing him.

I'd hope someone would offer a mid to late round pick for him.

You never know; after all, look what SD got for Charlie Whitehurst, who didn't throw a single regular-season pass in four years.

Let's look at some recent swaps...

Charlie WhiteHurst

~ 3rd Round Pick in 2006 ~ #81
~ 4 Years Experience
~ Not ONE Pass thrown in anger!!
~ San Diego reaped a swap of #60 for #40 and a Deferred 3rd Rounder.
~ The swap translates to 200 Book Value Points or #78, a 3rd Rounder.
~ The Deferred 3rd translates to a 4th Rounder.

* The Bolts got the equivalent of a 3rd and a 4th...Not bad.

Matt Schaub

~ 3rd Round Pick in 2004 ~ #90
~ 3 Years Experience
~ 2 Starts and he showed some flair
~ Atlanta got a swap of #10 for #8 in the 2007 Draft.
~ They also got Planet Hoosten's 2nd Rounder, #39.
~ Furthermore, they got a Deferred 2nd Rounder in 2008.
~ The Swap translates to 100 Book Value Points, or #100, a 4th Rounder.
~ The Deferred 2nd translates to a 3rd, of course.

* The Falcons got the equivalent of a nice 2nd, a 3rd, and a 4th!!

Kevin Kolb

~ 2nd Round Pick in 2007 ~ #36
~ 4 Years Experience
~ Started, but lost job to injury
~ Eagles got a Deferred 2nd Rounder and Dominique Rodgers.

* The Eagles got the equivalent of a 3rd Rounder + a young Pro Bowl Corner Back.

Matt Cassell

~ 7th Rounder in 2005
~ 4 Years Experience
~ 1 Year as Starter ~ finished VERY strong!!
~ The Patriots got a 2nd Rounder ~ #34
~ Vrabel was Value Neutral: we unloaded a contract

* The Patriots netted a juicy 2nd Rounder.

What Do These Indicate??

Anybody got any other examples, more applicable??

Because as I see it, we're in relatively uncharted ground with Hoyer:

We're talking about trading a UFA QB with minimal Combat Experience.

Wow...

You know who's a closer corollary than any of those guys??

Rob Johnson!!

~ 4th Rounder in 1995 ~ #99
~ 3 Years Experience
~ 1 ~ ONE!! ~ very impressive start!!
~ The Jaguars scorched Beefalo for a 1st AND a 4th Rounder in 1998!!

* Yep!! Rob Effing JOHNSON'S Resume got a 1st and a 4th!! :rocker:

* And the 1st was #9!! Freddie freaking TAYLOR!!!

Suddenly, swapping Hoyer for a 2nd or 3rd seems mighty viable, INDEED!!

Eh??

What little exercise??
A Patriots mock. I just skimmed the thread and found it on page 10.

It's good, but I think Fleener and Egnew will go before that, especially Fleener, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because it was made a while ago. It seems to me that the filthiness Gronk and Graham display weekly is something every team wants right now. But I do share your desire for even more TEs!

I also like Vontaze Perfect. Big value in the second round.

And I'm intrigued by OGs Jeff Allen and Manase Foketi, and DE Dom Hamilton. Its easy finding the no-brainers in the high rounds (Ex. DeCastro), but it's more fun finding the diamonds in the rough.

Nick Perry (Hoping he'll be there. If he is then he didn't have an outstanding combine, which is unlikely. Otherwise, hoping we get him by trading up a bit.)

Mohamed Sanu (Great numbers without an actual QB. How does that happen. I wish he had more speed. Doesn't get great separation. We need a receiver and he catches everything in site.)

Derek Wolfe (Finally coming around and dominating. Big dude).

Casey Hayward (Solid CB. Tackles and covers well.)

Danny Trevathan (WTF pick. Doesn't make sense and doesn't fit scheme. Just a football players who tackles everything in site and is in on every play.)

CB Chase Minnifield - Another UVA CB. Love his instincts and ability to play both man and zone equally well. Willing to mix it up in run support as well. Plus Belichick coached his dad in Cleveland so it make too much sense.

WR Dwight Jones - Another UNC WR? Just too big and fast to pass on in the early 2nd round. Has great hands but a case of the dropsies late in the year may have halted his rise up into the 1st round. Give him a full camp with Brady and he will complement the Welker/Gronk/AHern trio.

OC Ben Jones - Nasty and persistent. Takes pass protection personally and improved his run/drive blocking this year. Still have some questions about his lateral footwork (necessary for Pats interior line) but he seems athletic enough to excel in camp Scar.

DT Derek Wolfe - Not a 3-down player initially but he consistently gets into the pocket from a variety of positions, always with bad intentions. Will start out as a more athletic Mike Wright but has the frame to develop into a 3-4 DE over time.

S Aaron Henry - Lots of guys do well against directional state colleges, but he shows up in the big games. A true centerfielder that will eat up mistakes and isn't shy about hitting receivers over the middle.

DE Cam Johnson - This year's Marcus Cannon. Has sickle cell trait (like Ryan Clark) so he will never be able to play in Denver and likely won't be able to handle full-time snaps. However, he has 1st/2nd round talent and he should fall like a rock in this draft. Take him in the 4th, manage his snaps and get a productive player and all-around good kid.

1a. Zack Brown OLB UNC

Brown doesn't fit the typical Pats OLB weight requirement but it's an ever changing league and BB knows this. TE's have made a huge impact this year and teams will need somebody to cover them. In addition Bush, Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller are all in our division as well. The point is that you need a LB who is not only quick but has great straight line speed as well to cover these guys. I hoped Burfict could be a stud who had the ability to do this and be a run stuffer but he just makes too many stupid plays.

Brown is the only guy in the draft I see that could immediately step into this role for us. He has the quickness and speed to slow some of these guys down. Team Captain and elite athlete! He's played as a 3-4 OLB and as a 4-3 WOLB. He's been productive rushing the passer (5.5 sacks) and made splash plays (2 FF and 3 INT this year) to go with 105 tackles. I think Brown would immediately upgrade our pass defense. Also a ST beast!

This creates somewhat of a jam at LB but it's a good problem to have. I think Mayo moves back to MLB and Spikes / Ninko battle it out for SAM.

1b. Jerel Worthy - DT - MSU 6'3'' 310 lbs

Worthy gives the DL a much need injection of young, high-end talent. He can play the LDE or DT in a 4-3 or at DE in a 3-4. He's already used to playing against double teams. It has hurt his production but if he can draw double teams and hold his own for us it will be a very successful pick.

2a. Mark Barron - S - ALA - 6'2'' 218 lbs

In a slight trade up (our 2 + 3 for a higher 2 and future 3) we select a team captain from the 'bama D. Many say that we need true FS but BB likes his safeties to punish receivers. Barron is much bigger than any of our safeties and has been all SEC first team for 2 straight years. He will be an immediate upgrade for our defense.

2b. Jordan White - WR - Western Michigan - 6'0'' 215 lbs

Absolutely insane production. 234 catches, 3289 yards and 27 td's over the last 2 years. He'll drop b/c of the competition but was named first team all american. He may not be the deep threat so many want but his speed won't stop him from being successful. Good finding holes in the zone. Bottom of the 2nd round the success rate isn't very good so I'll gamble on the production and the coaches opinion of who is the best wr.

Grid, did you do one of these little exercises?

Eh??

What little exercise??

A Patriots mock. I just skimmed the thread and found it on page 10.

Ah...Gotcha!!

I'm actually working furiously on V12.0, right now!!

And I might actually publish this one...

Pretty funny, looking back: V1.0 was Halloween Weekend, back in my "34" days!!

Oh, and I agree with your point about the Late Round Gems.

I'm gonna try to hold off on illustrating the last few, because that would mean the first one would instantly be back a page...

Because I had time to waste, I decided to go theough this thread and come up with a Patsfans consensus mock. First the boring bit:

1. Allocated points for each pick (1A - 100, 1B - 75, 2A - 50, 2B - 25, 3 - 10, 4 - 5) to try and create seperation between the choices

2. If anyone projects a trade back any additional pick in a round gets the value of the lowest pick in the round

3. I've only used mocks on which OTG has "done the business"

4. I've ignored prospects who have chosen not too declare

5. To prevent all those getting the most high picks filling out the positions in the consensus mock, I've used CBSsports to rank the prospects to their nearest draft position. So for example, if Courtney Upshaw receives the third highest number of points, it wouldn't be right to project him as a 2A pick so he will be discarded and the next highest points scorer consistent with a 2A pick will be slotted there. Further to this final point, no prospect, save for round one prospects, can be mocked to a pick lower than where he is rated on the CBSsports ranking.

Onto the picks:

1A Courtney Upshaw DE/OLB Alabama

Lots of early love for Upshaw which died down as he looked to be further out of reach.

1B Devon Still DE/DT Penn St.

Honorable first round mentions go to (in order)

Mark Barron S Alabama
Chase Minnifield CB Virginia
Peter Konz C Wisconsin
Melvin Ingram DE/DT/OLB S Carolina

2A Vinny Curry DE/OLB Marshall

2B Robert Lester S Alabama

Outside of the 1st round caliber prospects, the two above were miles ahead of any other options. For second round picks, they really do represent a consensus.

3 Mike Brewster C Ohio St.

4 Joe Adams WR Alabama

Honorable mentions @4
Juron Criner
Michael Williams

Even allowing for the round one alternates (Still and Upshaw are probably out of reach), that's not too bad at all. I'd grade this a A- or B. The wisdom of the Patsfans masses.
