Nepatriots.com has a new mock out today. Not crazy about this one. Looks like back to the 3-4 with their selections. Which is cool. But, where's out 2-gap end and safety??

1a Dontae Hightower - ILB - Alabama - I guess I'm holding out hope for Spikes. I don't see Hightower as a 3 down player. Some think he can swing to olb in pass rushing situations. If he can do that fine. But, when he runs a 4.9 forty at the combine it's not going to look practical.

1b Vinny Curry - OLB/DE - Marshall - Like this pick. Can play either scheme de in a 4-3 or olb in a 3-4.

2a Leonard Johnson - CB - Iowa St

2b Joe Adams - WR - Arkansas - I like this kid. If you saw him play. Tremendous footspeed. Showed on punt returns, reverses and passes. Maybe, a DeSean Jackson type athlete.

2012 NFL Mock Draft | NEPatriotsDraft.com - 2012 NFL Draft

I might go something like this.

1a Fletcher Cox - DE - Miss St

1b Mark Barron - S - Alabama

2a Nick Perry - OLB/DE - USC

2b Andre Branch - OLB/DE - Clemson

Doubling up on olb in the 2nd because I didn't get one in the first. Trying that Gronk/AHern and Vereen/Ridley strategy at that position.
No prob with a wr like Joe Adams at 2b. Our defense is just painful to watch.

Four Picks!!

Four Defenders!!

Beautifull!!
:rocker:

That's how Championships are built, baby.

CBSsports has a new rankings out. I feel their top 50 is very solid. Only oddball ranking I see is EJ Manuel - QB - FSU at 36.

2012 NFL Draft Prospects - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Going by their rankings I might do something like this.

1a Nick Perry - OLB - USC - If he runs a 4.64 forty. Will move up.

1b Fletcher Cox - DE - Miss st - Two gap end. We've never really replaced Seymour and Warren.

2a Robert Lester - S - Alabama - If he doesn't fall here. Maybe Martin from Ok St.

2b Dwight Jones - WR - UNC - They have him at 94. My guess is that he goes higher.

3 Leonard Johnson - CB - Iowa St - He's the kid that did a great job on Justin Blackmon in their upset over Ok St.

4 Malik Jackson - DE - Tennessee - Can he bulk up and play 2 gap?
Worth the risk.

Walter Football has a 3 rounder out today.

WalterFootball.com: 2012 NFL Mock Draft

1a Whitney Mercilus - DE - Illinois
Seems a good fit for a LDE in a 4-3.

1b Jerel Worthy - DT - Mich St
Looked great in some games. Invisible in others.

2a TJ McDonald - S - USC
Just announced he's returning to school.

2b Jeff Fuller - WR - Texas A&m
Thought he was a top 15 pick after his junior season. Sub-par senior year. Craig James kept saying his hammy bothered him all year while announcing Texas/Texas A&M game.

3 Joe Adams - WR - Arkansas
Speed to stretch the field. Prob 4.4 and can return kicks. If we had a better defense, Fuller and Adams might be a good gamble. Could turn out to be your 2nd and 3rd wr's behind Welker.

NFL Draft Mock 2012 | NFL Draft Mock Draft

1a Peter Konz - C - Wisconsin -
We could use a developmental C. But, we've scored 500pts with 4 guys playing C. I'm fine re-upping Koppen and going with him and Wendell. Use this pick on defense. Nothing against Konz. Just have other bigger needs.

1b Robert Lester - FS - Alabama
Good player. Even better fit. Gaping hole at FS.

2a Nick Perry - OLB - USC
Seems like this kid is going to go higher. We might have to take him in the first if we want him.

2B Cordy Glenn - G - Georgia
Mammoth T. Sounds quite a bit like Marcus Cannon. Who looks fine. Don't get this pick.

3 Marvin McNutt - WR - Iowa
Big kid. 6'4". Former qb. Shouldn't have trouble picking up the offense. Does have one seemingly painful drop per game. Get him a JUggs machine and draft him.

4. David Kruger - DE - Utah

5. DaJohn Harris - DT - USC - Didn't we trade this for Fat Albert?

Patriots Picks

1A- Dont'a Hightower, LB: I think somehow the Patriots trade up for this guy can play every linebacker spot in a 4-3 and 3-4, whether it be inside or outside and has experience in a defensive scheme similar to the Patriots at Alabama.

1B- Chase Minnifield, CB: Yes another corner but a great one. Minnifield is an underated corner from Virginia that fits th Patriots scheme and would be a great fit at the end of the first where the Patriots pick.

2A- Vinny Curry, DE: Insane pass rusher who Would be a great fit as a 4-3 end and could line up at linebacker in a 3-4 plus he was a team captain at Marshall and the Patriots like to pick team captains.

2B- Michael Brewster, C/ Joe Adams, WR: I honestly do not know where they will go here. They could trade this pick. Brewster seems like the liklier pick because the Patriots don't draft receivers in the 2nd and it may be a little high for Joe Adams.

3- AJ Jenkins, WR: This is the receiver the Patriots should grab, he's severely underrated and is one of the better receivers in this class. Whether it's Jenkins or someone else, I see the Patriots going receiver in the 3rd with Jenkins being the best fit.

4- Ryan Broyles, WR: The Patriots like doubling up on skill players in the draft. In the past couple of years they have taken Gronkowski and Hernandez in the same draft and have taken Vereen and Ridley in the Same draft. Ryan Broyles is a player who has Patriots written all over him. He was a dominant receiver in college but his stock will fall because of the injury and the Patriots love value picks, they love picking players who fall later in the draft ala Tate and Hernandez.

I found this on another forum re an OLB's 40 time:

LaMarr Woodley - 4.75
Tamba Hali - 4.87
Terrell Suggs - 4.84
James Harrison - 4.85

Hightower is just a good ball player whenever I've seen him, dropping into short coverage, rushing the Qb, blitzing from the inside. In my view he'll be an upgrade on Jermaine Cunningham or even Spikes. And the thing is, he'll be good value as against upshaw for example who'll probably require a trade up, Hightower might well still be there with one of our first rounders. My final argument in his favour is this. He's a central part of a dominant College defense and the captain of that D. Why wouldn't we want part of that?

not being argumentative, just making the case for Hightower.

That Alabama defense is loaded with pro prospects; Upshaw, Hightower, Kirkpatrick, Lester, Barron, Chapman. Plus some guys not even eligible for the draft. It's easier to look good when you're surrounded by talent than when other coaches can scheme their offense to stop you. Can't do that with any Bama defender. That's all. Doesn't mean they won't be good pros. Just makes them harder to evaluate IMO than a guy playing at Miss St.

Walter had a 3 rounder out yesterday.

1a Whitney Mercilus - DE - Illinois
1b Jerel Worthy - DT - Mich St
2a Markelle Martin - S - Oklahoma St
2b Jeff Fuller - WR - Texas A&M
3 joe adams - wr - Arkansas

Not awful. But, instead of doubling up on wr's, I'd rather have a cb. Maybe Shaun Prater from Iowa or Coryell Judie from Texas A&M. Substitute Robert Lester for Martin. And, Dontari Poe for Worthy and I'd be happy. Sticking with the 4-3 with this group.

WalterFootball.com: 2012 NFL Mock Draft

Mercilus
Poe
Lester
Prater
Adams

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Bruce Irvin taken by GB right after Pats selection
By the way , I,Augustus likes a lot of players in the third round :
Robert Lester S
Shawn Prater CB
Levi Ad**** RT
Vinny Curry DE
Andrew Datko RT
Michael Brewster C
Kheeston Randall DE

I want them to draft two DEs in this draft.

1a. Dont'a Hightower - ILB/OLB - Alabama - not hard to figure this out. Very physical and smart football. The Pats need an enforcer playing ILB which is what Spikes was supposed to be. If Spikes plays like he should, Hightower could play multiple LB positions and the Pats LB's would be a force.

1b. Fletcher Cox - DE/DT - Miss st - Two gap end playing great football in the SEC and has proven he is a player with strength and agility.

2a Mark Barron - S - Alabama - He may be available. Seen him listed as high as 18 and as low as 55. The hardest hitting and most physical safety in the draft. The Pats could get another possible safety later in the 4th - 6th rounds. Avoid a CB unless Dowling's injury is worse than it has been listed. The PATS need to rebuild the safety positions and Chung's durability is questionable.

2b. Andre Branch - DE - Clemson - Solid player and coachable

3. Michael Brewster - C - Ohio State - The Patriots need a new center to stabilize that OL.

Picks 1a thru 2b are perfect and that's pretty close to my dream draft. As for pick 3, I'm more on the fence. Brewster, Joe Adams, Marvin McNutt, a DE/DT are all possibilities here.

My choice of Brewster as a pick 3 depended on the return of Koppen at center and WR/DE available but am still on the fence as well. I will be real curious about what the Pats do about getting later round picks. There could be some potential solid safeties available including info from Walterfootball:

Winston Guy Jr., S, Kentucky Height: 6-1. Weight: 210 Projected 40 Time: 4.49. Projected Round (2012): 3. Guy Jr. can play safety or cb and may be a great sleeper in the draft

Trumaine Johnson, FS/CB, Montana Height: 6-2. Weight: 197. Projected 40 Time: 4.54. Projected Round (2012): 3-4. Ton of talent but hurt his climb up draft boards by getting arrested in October.

Brandon Taylor, FS, LSU Height: 6-0. Weight: 191. Projected 40 Time: 4.51. Projected Round (2012): 3-4. Taylor has played well this season and his stock is on the rise.

Blake Gideon, FS, Texas Height: 6-1. Weight: 200. Projected 40 Time: 4.54. Projected Round (2012): 4-5. Gideon is fourth season as a starter for Texas.

George Iloka, S, Boise State Height: 6-3. Weight: 207. Projected 40 Time: 4.58. Projected Round (2012): 5-6. Iloka leads Boise State in tackles with 53, experienced player who is a good athlete.

Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame Height: 6-2. Weight: 215. Projected 40 Time: 4.61. Projected Round (2012): 5-7.

McCourty has been very inconsistent this year but think he can still rebound and be a solid cb. Dowling has yet to be seen but I would wait on picking another cb in the 1st or 2nd round again. Chung is a tough player but is hurt a lot and the Pats need a hard hitting safety in the draft like Barron and also pick another potential starter. Its time to stop using WRs as safeties.

Wow I just looked at our draft picks and I'm surprised how few we have. Now I wish instead if cutting Sanders, Butler, Merriweather, and Tate we could have tried to get some kind of picks for them.

The situation is worse now as we have few assets that can be traded away.

Nothing wrong with cutting Meriweather or Butler.

Tate, yeah..knowing now if I wish we had kept him. I didn't want to cut him either but it was him or TP.
Sanders-Still wondering why we cut him. I liked him. Didn't have much talent but he did the most important part of his job-Do your job.

(A) Do you really think the Pats would cut Meriweather if they had a trade offer on the table?

(B) The Pats do have at least one useful asset (namely, Hoyer).

Only team that offered a contract to Brandon was the Bears. And now he is riding the bench.

Remember this from last year. This is Parcells requirement for defensive players. And since Belichick coached with Parcells, their requirements are similar.
