J.R. Redmond put the Patriots in a position to kick the game winning field goal twice in the playoffs in 2001, once against Raiders and again vs the Rams in the Super Bowl. It didn't make him a great or even good player.

Gallup is a "good" player at best. I'm not trading 2nd team All Pro Joe Thuney for an okay WR. They can do a lot better than that.

Nor do I see WR as a huge position of need. If they could vastly improve the position with Julio Jones is one thing, simply adding another body to the team that passes the least in the NFL... why?

Get a TE, get a dominating DT... there are bigger positions of need and places with more room for improvement.
I wouldn't trade Thuney straight-up for Gallup either...But if Dallas offers Gallup AND their 2nd-rounder for him, then you absolutely have to strongly consider it...

I also agree about our needs at TE & DT...But to not see WR as a huge position of need is just not logical.

The young WR's they currently have need to continue to improve, as does the level of passing at QB.

Thinking super talent is going to improve things drastically is fan groupthink. Baker Mayfields stats got worse after adding OBJ and Landry. They built an OLine this offseason and now they're good.

The Pat's don't pass. The accuracy of the passing is inconsistent at best.

There is little chance the cowboys would trade one of their star WRs, especially after Dak's injury...the only good WRs that might be available are AJ Green, Julio Jones, and Allen Robinson...

Mason's contract is Not reasonable.
Mason's new money for 2021 is $7M, abut the same for 2021 and 2022.

I understand that GM Stone would cut Mason. Mason would be fine with that. He can easily get another contract for $7M a year. He is a solid starter. He is unlikely to asked to take a pay cut, and he would be even more unlikely to take one.

We have Thuney, Eluemunor and Andrews in their contract year. And you focus on getting rid of Mason and Cannon. ???

We need to make decisions about these three before free agency.

The 2021 issue isn't cap money.

I'm not looking at his 2021 new money, I'm looking at his 2021 cap hit of $9.775M...If released we save $3.85M...

I agree 100%. Where we disagree is whether we should cut a solid OG to save $3M.
Generally I wouldn't, but that will depend on what next off-season looks like...If Cannon retires as rumored, then his savings alone might allow us to keep both Mason & Thuney...

Gallup isn't a superstar or a "super talent" but let's let the facts speak for themselves. One is buried behind two very good WR's

Harry - targets 6, 12, 4, 6 - so despite us not throwing a lot, Harry is getting targets. He's posted a 7.8, 9, 17, 7 - Yards/Route. 39, 72, 34 & 21 yards each game.

Gallup has the same amount of targets more or less but he's played an extra game. Also he's basically averaging 5 targets a game - 5, 5, 9, 5, 4. Yards/Route - 16.67, 29, 23, 14.50 & 18.25.

This isn't hating on Harry at all. All off-season I gave him the benefit of the doubt and I'm still not making a concrete decision but I'm definitely a little disappointed. I had a 2nd on him, thought he'd be much better. That's part of it, the value of a 1st/2nd but pretending things aren't what they are isn't helping anyone. It is what it is. Harry's book isn't written but its ok to acknowledge he hasn't been worth a 1st or you're a little disappointed in his play.

Saying he wouldn't get reps here over Harry/Byrd is insane though. I mean talk about the fastest way to lose players trust and faith! Players aren't stupid and they see that and know everyone isn't for one goal. What does Bill always say about playing the best players??

I had a 2nd on Gallup and thought he would be great here. Don't have any PTP list from that class I don't believe but I think others in the draft forum liked him as well. Just in case the hindsight police want to pull up, lights flashing.

We already have a contract with Mason.

So, you're suggesting that Thuney would sign for what Cannon costs?

No, but between the savings from a retired Cannon and the subsequent less-radical restructuring of Mason's contract, Thuney's re-signing here isn't the seeming impossibility that it is being made out to be...But if it takes the jettisoning of both Mason & Cannon to keep Thuney here, then so be it...Big Mike can then slide into the starting RG spot if necessary, and Elu is already starting at RT.

Green is not going anywhere unless he gets cut (which the Bengals have no reason to do). He is playing on a 17.9M franchise tag. Even traded at the deadline that would still be a price tag of about 10M for 10 games.

BB has always been reluctant to pay top of market deals outside of a few positions. We all know that Thuney is an excellent player and exceedingly reliable but like Chandler Jones the question will be is he worth a sizable portion of the cap at a position that currently appears to have some depth. I would be surprised to see him offered a deal for 5/80 or whatever it takes for someone in his position.

Your right, Green is on the Franchise tag, so they owe him $18.7 million even if they cut him. Franchise tags are guaranteed money. So no, they are not cutting him. His salary is about $1.7 million a game. The trade deadline is 10/29, so if they traded for him then, he would still be owed over $10 million. I'm not sure if he would garner a third round comp pick, because I doubt anyone is going to sign him for that kind of money, so guess the Pats could try trading the Brady comp pick for him. But he looks disinterested at best in playing football. Ten years in Cincy will do that to you, you would have to hope that a change of scenery would help.
