Widespread Hazing Problem in NFL

The 1st round draft picks, son.

Jonathan Martin was not a 1st round pick.

They also haze 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and UDFAs.

You're slinging stuff against the wall hoping some will stick.

Go on, get my car washed and pay for it.

How the hell do you even spend 30k on a dinner? What in the world are they buying?

Those unproven rookies are getting 5 million in guaranteed money.

After taxes it's about 2.5 million, you might want to purchase a house help out your family put some away for a rainy day, it's not as much as you think it is and goes rather quickly unless you are careful.

Football players going dead broke in the nfl and the sports industry in general is quite a big issue. Asking a rookie to fork over 10-20 grand is disturbing and is a mentality that shouldn't be promoted imo.

Not to mention the agent's cut, the insurance policy premiums and the fact that no NFL contract is guaranteed for future years.

Don't ruin the kid's fantasy with realism.

The rookie dinner based on what I know from people I have known in the NHL. Are split between all the rookies. And then the rookies split the cost usually based on contract size. So a first rounder is going to pay more then the late round guy.

So if LT payed 20G's the late round guy is paying like 5.

And how many times in a season is it done?

Look, there is a reason BB put his foot down and put an end to this in NE over a decade ago.

That's plenty of money to be able to fork over 18k once without having to worry. This isn't a weekly occurrence like some people are making it sound.

From the glimpses published at Gronkowski's Las Vegas bar tabs a while back, I believe most of it goes into expensive booze -- $300 bottles of champagne, etc.

Dez Bryant paid $54k, and thought it was funny.

This Incognito thing is not about hazing. It has racial overtones and is potentially criminal. I still wonder what the heck was going on with the leadership in the locker room of Miami to allow this garbage to take place.

Are haircuts hazing? Sure. Dinners? Yes. The problem with hazing, whether military or fraternities/sororities, is it is a fine line between building comradery through tradition and beating people down who fail to see tradition and solely interpret the acts as demeaning.

I thought the dinner payments tended to fall on the first rounders with decent signing bonuses, not the lower picks. For example, $54k from a $2.5 million signing bonus and an $8.3 million guarantee reduces the bonus to a mere $2.446 million. Dez likely was not taking the bus after this 'ordeal' that he had absolutely no issue with.

The rookie dinner was done once a season. I don't no if the NFL is the same. I am just relaying what I have been told about them over the years.

Please don't use Dez Bryant as an example of how to look at finances responsibly. He's not the greatest judge on this subject. Using him as a role model for reaction to his money being wasted only diminishes the discussion.

"Hey, it's OK! The financially ******ed man-child thought that $54,000 dinner tab for the vets was funny!"

Dez Bryant went on a massive rookie spending spree

Dez may not have to take the bus after dinner now, but there is an excellent chance he will have to in the future before you or I ever have to.

And with the average NFL career between 3.5 years (NFLPA) and 6.0 years (NFL), some of the assumptions by folks here that these expenses for dinners. etc. are 'harmless' is ill-informed.

Just for the record:

Second-round draft picks, right now, are getting about $4-$5M total over four years. Not $5M guaranteed, $5M total.

UDFAs are getting rookie minimums plus, by rule, a maximum of $25,000 signing bonus. Their contracts are not guaranteed, so imagine paying, say, $5,000 in Week 2 only to be cut in Week 4.

just checking, but everyone knows the rookie dinner idea isnt unique to the NFL right? It is commonplace in the NHL, and NBA, and would imagine MLB as well. Whether or not you think it is extreme or not, its definitely not something that has been unearthed because of the recent Dolphin fiasco. Many of these stories come out as team building stories in newspaper stories, with rookies taking it on the chin as a welcome to the league.

I think its also incredibly easy to look at the 18-30k bills and think of the poor rookies, except we also arent privy to all the times QBs are taking out linemen, guys are living at vets houses for weeks, and any other way that thousands of dollars are thrown around for these rookies benefit.

One is voluntary from vets with stable careers and the other is involuntary from rookies trying to catch on.

I wouldn't say it is quid pro quo.

no, I wouldnt either, but I think its easy to get caught up on a number because we know it, while it could very easily balance out without our knowledge.
