Why haven't Drake's fundamentals been fixed?

the bigger problem with drake right now isn't fundamentals - his issue IMHO is between the ears; last year a lot of his mistakes (fumbles, INTs especially) were him trying to hard to make something happen, he had a little of Bledsoe in him in that regard......this year, new coach, new staff, higher expectations, he's gripping a little.......you can see they are stressing with him to slide, he's sliding too early, he's not as dynamic as he was running the ball......throw in all the new players, the new line, the new system, higher team expectations, and a rainy game one, and the kid was squeezing the bat a little too tight......i suspect as we move forward he'll relax a little and the good stretches will get bigger and bigger

I think this is an important question. It is entirely fine for Josh to focus on getting Drake squared away on his role in the new scheme, but there should be someone - isn't there a qb coach? - who can continue to work with Drake on his fundamentals. You don't have to be an expert - it suffices to have watched Brady for all those years, for purposes of comparison - to see that Drake's feet are all over the place. Tom, as I recall, used to drill that sort of thing continually through his whole career. iI understand Drake is not the sort old-school pocket passer Brady was, because of different physical skills in large part, but there is no reason Drake can't make progress in minding his footwork. Some of it might be his scatterbrained manner, but not all of it. It's a skill, not a gift, and you can work at it.
If only Vrabel thought to hire a QB coach......

I felt like it was more a matter of his stride being 1/2 inch too short, and his arm was 2 degrees lower than it should have been.
Maybe, I will need to double check

Edit: Great eye

I hope he doesn't think Josh McDaniels is one. Brady was Brady: McDaniels had very little to do with his success. I hope Vrabel knows McDaniels and Mac Jones was just an aberration.

Josh Allen admitted he had the time to work on it because he was bored during covid and the fact he had nothing else to do was incredibly helpful for him to focus on that. He also had lower body issue which caused upper body issues which was kind of a unique issue that not many QB's have.
Ironically one of his fixes to keep his shoulder staying behind his hip turn (big issue for him before 2020) was to start with the ball going back lower. Tom Brady, the man of perfect QB mechanics, brings the ball straight up. He would NEVER do what Allen does. But it works for Allen who is pretty good MVP worthy QB. There are PERFECT Tom Brady mechanics and there are mechanics that work for other people that are not perfect.

The fact Allen needs to bring the ball lower, like Drake Maye does, is probably why he still has some massive misses, but it's made him more accurate overall because that small issue is much better than his really bad issue he had.

Drake was one of the most accurate deep ball throwers in college, best in years on tape. Down the field he is money, you don't mess too much with that but you can improve his motion on shorter throws. He tries to use the same longer windup on shorter throws but the mechanics make the probability of getting out of synch higher and the fact he has to put less into the throw can throw off the arm placement.

His throwing motion works great for him on most throws but he needs to adjust his mechanics for shorter throws to compact the throwing motion. The longer the motion the more chance to get out of whack. He's done it enough that he almost always gets his arm and ball in the correct position before throwing. It's like a golf swing, all that matters is the club face when you hit the ball, how you get there is meaningless other than some ways of doing it lead to more consistency.

Let's not go crazy and think Patriots don't have people working with Maye on this. You can see many throws where he is great on mechanics. It does seem when he is too hyped at beginning of games, when he starts avoiding the rush he falls back into his less accurate mechanics. Some of that could be mental, some of that is the fact it's harder to simulate 300 pound guys trying to kill you when working on mechanics in practice.

Nobody that has worked with him ever questioned his work ethic.

Let's not also forget when this season ends Maye will be younger than Daniels was at the beginning of LAST season.

Great nuance .. it takes a whole lot of reps to build muscle memory and unlearn bad habits. We just need to be patient and allow the time for memory to kick in. It could be this season or next season.

Thanks for the wonderful simplistic post in breaking down complex concepts for easier assimilation.

Its like asking why is Drake 22 years old? Fans can be so utterly stupid. The kid has been doing thinds as a QB one way for most of his life, he comes into a bunch or idiot coaches for a year, and at 22 you want to know why he isn't Tom Brady. Its so frikin stupid.
Straw man. No one here is wondering why he isn't Tom Brady.

I thought I remebered that he had. If not, he should have, a guy to work on technique, fundamentals. I agree that if he did not hire such a person, that's pretty derelict on his part.

All true, but that does not mean he doesn't need to work on his fundamentals, which were an acknowledged problem even before he was drafted.

He did. It’s Ashton Grant.

If it was straightforward to fix fundamentals, every drafted qb would make the HOF

Yes, Brady had his QB coach. It was NOT the OC who helped Brady develop. It was his QB coach and his conditioning guru.
Or it is the head coach like Brady had, BRILLIANT Analysis by Brady on developing QB's. Might be good thing we have Josh. Must watch!

Good God! Tom Brady wears glasses? The man is mortal? I thought he was bionic.

Not if the QB were Baker Mayfield.
I wasn't a fan of his at all when I first saw him but he's come a long way. Hopefully Maye will do the same.

Maye's been in a tough spot. He's had constant changes to the coaching staff and a supporting cast that's as weak as any in the NYFL.

That was a real eye-opener. Thanks
