When did our defense get so bad?

I have only one worry about the defense. Who is injured, and when will they be healthy?

The defensive starters were laughing a joking with temperature at 85. They'll all be fine.

The rookies are doing very well indeed. Mayo, Wheatley and Crable ALL seem to be the real deal and look like contributers in their first season.

We seem to have three veterans corners to pick from. All seem fine with the system: Bryant, Webster (who has been injured) and Lewis Sanders.

Well Bill didn't seem to pissed after the game.

BB cares about making it through the preseason with a healthy squad. The minute that I saw the players yucking it up on the sidelines, I realized just how important this game was. This game was more important for BB to see what Matt Cassel and other guys on the bubble can do, than winning the game. Isn't there a cut down this week?

Preseason. The key word there is preseason. Yes, our defense looks atrocious. It is both missing starters and playing an entirely vanilla scheme. Additionally, the veterans are largely going through the motions, and treating the game like what it is, a tune-up. I've said it multiple times now, but I'll say it again - this happens every year. Belichick just doesn't approach these games like contests, but as practices and teaching tools. They're nothing more than glorified scrimmages, used to work on game situations. If this continues to the first real game, and Larry Johnson runs all over us, then there will be a reason to panic. But I wouldn't count on that happening.
Good post.

One thing that struck me was seeing Welker laughing it up on the sidelines right in the middle of our offensive putridity. It took me a moment or two, but it was then that I realized that this game for them was not what it seemed to be for me (if that makes any sense?)...seeing a hard-nosed and true competitor like Welker laughing it up while we were stinking up the joint reinforced to me that none of the veterans were remotely treating this game as a competitive endeavor.

I may be wrong, of course.

This is the second preseason game where teams are "running up" the score against us. Has "class" takin a back seat this preseason? When a team is down by several TD's and allmost shutout in the 1st half of a preseason game, should Gruden really be risking his 3nd string starters? I call BS. There's no way they'd be doin this if Gruden didn't have some type of film showing our gameplan. He probably had someone film the snowbowl and used it illigally. Freakin cheaters. They probably studied tape of our currant Backub QB's too. Had Gruden not known Cassell sucked so bad there's no question what would have happened in this game. I hope Goodell spends as much time picking apart this so called "legal" game as he did when deciding whether or not to give Polian head on the first date.

I was just going to say that there was an identical thread almost word for word and post for post on Jetinsider last night, only the subject was the Jets D.

Then I read your post, nothing like your post in the JI thread.

When I saw Vrabel and Bruschi yucking it up, that was enough for me to see just how important this game was to them. Those guys are fierce competitors. You would never see that in a real game.

Yep - I saw that, as well.

If what we are suspecting is true, I wonder what situational parameters BB and the coaching staff are creating, and what they hope to learn or determine from them? Having the defense open like a sieve to observe which players are good in pursuit? Etc...

The only thing that I can think of is that the first cut down is coming up soon. Maybe they wanted to evaluate some of the other players. They obviously wanted to check out Cassel. I was surprised at how long he was out there. They certainly gave him enough rope to hang himself.

Personally I enjoyed the snap that went 86 yards in the wrong direction. You don't get that kind of fun stuff during the regular season.

Well, they'd better not....
