What would it take for you to stop watching football?

I quit watching baseball when they stole the World Series from the fans after playing most of the season. Something like that would do it.

Or, the NFL could just keep pushing the game the way of flag football, like they are now, and I'll eventually tire of the nonsense.

the day that manning hangs the shoulder pads up is the day im out.....it just wouldn't be interesting anymore....he has been the face of the league for over a decade....its made for great theater.....imagine the vacuum that will be left in his absence.....oh well, i'll still have tennis

just because he retires from the game doesn't mean he's going away....you'll get MORE than your fill when he hangs them up...

If Goodell came to my house and raped me on non consecutive occasions I might scale back my viewing to just Pats games.

Not sure anything or anyone could stop me from watching football, with the exception if they turned it into some game that bears no resemblance to how it is played today.. as much as I loathe the commercialization of Manning and probably Manziel, the games is bigger than any one person...

Football is a "good addiction" and not sure I want to find a new drug...

i hope you're right....i would feel a little lonely without peyton in my life

The day the Jets win the SB......

But that will probably mean hell froze over, so we'd all be fcuked then!

I stopped...watching baseball because of the 4 hour commitment for the privilege of viewing 5 minutes of action. I do pay attention to the scores and player movement/roster building.
I stopped attending NFL games because of the lack of flow due to the TV breaks. Watching the Budweiser Girls take the Gatorade Challenge during the Taco Bell TV timeout sponsored by Capital One credit cards.....paying $100 for a ticket to be a lab rat for subliminal mind experiments....Serenity now!!
I stopped watching any NFL game on TV that didn't involve the Patriots but will keep Red Zone on continuously. Again, the no-commercial element of Red Zone wins me over and my fantasy addiction...of course
I am...hooked on English Premiere League soccer. I have always liked the sport and I consciously began to support Liverpool the day Henry bought the team. I lucked out that Liverpool is really really good and they play an attacking brand of futball. Even better,it is rare that a team you root for has a "special" player that you can't help but focus on....Brady, Bird, Orr....and Liverpool had one in Suarez and likely has another in this kid Sterling who may be the fastest in the sport. That is appealing...a chance to witness greatness is very rare, so sign me up.
Five reasons the EPL has won me over.
1) Weekend morning games.
2) Two hour commitment
3) 45 minute periods of uninterrupted action/no commercials
4) Passionate fans
5) NBC Sports Network coverage....starting last year, NBC took over broadcasts and they have elevated the coverage and done a great job capturing the passion inside the stadium

It is quite clear that the underlying element of my sports fickleness is based on my unwillingness to be bombarded by commercialism at a sporting event. Two uninterrupted 45 minute periods of action is about as pure a sporting event as there is and that is appealing to me. Hockey comes very close as well

+1, except the stuff about soccer. The NFL will continue down the path of more and more commercial breaks, more and more pandering to fantasy footballers, more and more rules that ostensibly make the game "safer", but really just make it less like the game we grew up loving--all designed to increase the bottom line in the short term, without any regard for its core fan base. At some point, soon, at this pace, the NFL will break me.

Team outside of North America. Super Bowl outside of North America. Out of control bs flags making game unfair, and more hitting restrictions.

Well you're done next year then!

Taking it off TV, as long as it is on I WILL watch it, all Sunday..and Sunday night, and Monday and now Thursday now that CBS is taking over...and on Saturday's Wildcard Weekend...Football, Hockey, Golf....in that order...

I've been segueing over from all day every Sunday to meh, on in the background over the years. When the Pats are on, I usually watch in the "foreground" for much of the game, but yes, I take plays off.

There are still JEST fans after this...

...so I feel morally obligated to continue my fandom come what may.

Can't quite believe this hasn't happened already, figuratively if not literally.

It does, however, raise an important question for group discussion:

If Commissioner Goodell and Fnordcircle were to have a love child, what would it look like?

This, it would take this.

I like to think that and it's easy to think that now, but I'm thinking about the UFC.

A decade ago the UFC was on a meteoric rise in America, and had a really good product. It was just an avalanche of success and caught on in a craze. There were people who believed MMA was going to become the biggest sport in the world. I didn't think it could ever eclipse the NFL, since the NFL is so embedded in American culture, it's even a part of our holiday traditions. That said, it wasn't a completely unfounded statement. The UFC was just exploding.

Fast forward from when it really peaked, with Brock Lesnar holding the Heavyweight title, to now, and at least in America it's seriously ebbed in popularity. A hundred awful judge decisions that lead to highway robberies during title fights, the most popular generation of fighters retiring, and a bunch of other problems, and the once seemingly unstoppable ascension of MMA has puttered out and become something former avid followers now just check on now and then.

It's hard to imagine now, but I do think the NFL can destroy itself. High scoring games are interesting because they're unique, and not everyone has the talent to do it, but I wouldn't want to see every single game in the future NFL be the 2011 Patriots v. the 2011 Patriots.

I can see that getting really old to watch when its a universal across the league, week in and week out.

That would be completely redefining the game of football.
